  • 4 Mar 1915: We regret to record the death of Mrs Isabella Sykes, which took place at her residence "Mansfield House," Berwick, on Sunday, Feb. 28, aged 69 years. Her husband, Mr Jesse Sykes, was at one time in a big line of business in North Melbourne, as timber merchant. Afterwards he took up land at Beaconsfield, and for some years was a member of the Berwick Shire Council, being one of the representatives of the Beaconsfield Riding. Mr Sykes, who has reached the allotted "three score years and ten" is still hale and hearty.34

  • 11 Jul 1890: FASHIONABLE WEDDING. On the 19th ult. a very pretty wedding took place at the North Melbourne Presbyterian Church, the contracting parties being Mr. William Craig, late of Ballarat and North Beaconsfield State School, and Miss Bina Sykes, eldest daughter of Mr. J. Sykes, of Haines street. The bride was tastefully attired in a beautiful costume of goblin blue with trimmings and wreath to match, and a natural orange blossom wreath, and handsome veil which was fastened with brooches prettily ornamented with handsome stones. Miss Craig, sister of the bridegroom, acted as bridesmaid, as did also the bride's two sisters Miss A. and E. Sykes. The Rev. J. T. Robertson, Pastor of the Union Memorial Church, officiated, and after the ceremony an excellent breakfast was partaken of at the residence of the bride's father, the room being nicely decorated with camelias and other flowers sent from Beaconsfield by Mrs. Brumfield and Mrs. Lennie and others. About 80 guests sat down, amongst whom were Mr. and Mrs. Sutton, Mr. and Mrs. Ballenger, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Porter, Mrs. Pearce, Mr. and Mrs. Sykes, Mr. J. Craig, and the Rev. J. T. Robertson. The toast of the bride and bridegroom was given by the last named gentleman, and was happily responded to by Mr. Craig. The "Bridesmaids" was proposed by Mr. W. Craig and responded to by Mr. Barclay, and after other toasts Mr. and Mrs. Craig left for their honeymoon at Warragul by the Gippsland evening express. The bride and bridegroom were accompanied to the station by their relations and friends and accorded a hearty "send off," many kind wishes being expressed for their future happiness. William Craig10
  • 10 Dec 1909: Obituary. DEATH OF Mrs. CRAIG, DONCASTER
    It is with feelings of the most profound regret that we have to chronicle the sad news of the death of Mrs. Craig, wife of Mr. W. Craig, head teacher of the Doncaster East state school. Mrs. Craig, who had not been in her usual health for some time, had gone for a change, to recuperate her health, to her parents' home at Beaconsfield, and there she passed away suddenly. Her numerous friends had no idea that the end was so near, and when the melancholy intelligence of her untimely decease reached Doncaster, quite a gloom was cast over the whole district. It was hard to realise that one so full of life, so enthusiastic, so indefatigable in the pursuit of all good works, had suddenly been called beyond the veil, and her many fellow-workers in many a worthy cause could hardly credit that they had been bereft of her valued services, and that no more would they gaze upon a friend so well beloved and so universally esteemed.
    During the fifteen years of her residence in Doncaster Mrs. Craig had been closely identified with the social life of the community, and her hospitality was proverbial. Her genial husband, as head teacher of the school, as secretary of the local Oddfellows' lodge, as secretary and president of various sports clubs, as organiser of many movements for the good of the district, was always ably, unselfishly, and indefatigably backed up by his good-natured, high-spirited and energetic wife in all his undertakings, so that it can be readily understood how keenly she will be missed, and how deeply all sympathise with the bereaved husband and children. Mrs. Craig was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sykes, of Beaconsfield, and formerly of North Melbourne. She had reached the age of 46. She leaves a family of five—three boys and two girls. The eldest boy (who is employed at the Canterbury post office) is 17 years old, and the youngest, also a boy, has seen seven summers. The interment took place in the Melbourne general cemetery, the coffin being conveyed by train to the Princes bridge station, where a large number of friends attended to pay the last tribute of respect to one so highly esteemed. All the organisations to which she had ungrudgingly given assistance during her lifetime were well represented, the Oddfellows attending in full force, the highest tribunal of that order being represented by Director Barton and P.G.M. Foley. The service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Hennell, of Holy Trinity church, Doncaster, of which church Mrs. Craig had been a devoted helper. Handsome wreaths were forwarded by the Doncaster East school children, the M.U. board of directors, the Yarra Yarra district officers, the Doncaster cricket club, the Canterbury post office attendants, and others.11

The deceased was well known as a prominent player in the North Melbourne Football Club, and was popularly designated "Snowy."
    Mr. Sykes, who followed the occupation of a building contractor in the West, like his father here, was 43 years of age at the time of his death.7

  • 28 Nov 1903: Painful Accident to a Child,—While running round his father's house in Finch-street, Beechworth, on Tuesday afternoon, a little son of Mr Jesse Sykes fell on a broken bottle and inflicted two very nasty cuts on his nose and temple which bled profusely. A young man who was delivering goods at the time drove the child to Dr. Skinner's surgery, where his injuries were promptly attended to.7

Land-Note*2 May 1882 GEM-E-7. Peter Pither applied for a lease to occupy the land he had selected by placing conspicuous cairns of stones. His neighbours were Nelson and Collyer, and roads formed parts of the western and all of the southern boundary. A 6-year lease was granted.5 
Land-Note27 Oct 1888 GEM-E-7. Peter Pither applied for a renewal of his lease. He stated on his forms that his original licence had been issued on 1 Dec 1882. He had erected a 24 feet square wattle and daub cottage, built a reservoir and three wells, he had cleared two acres and drained 15 acres. He stated that the land was not fit for cultivation. His fences were 142 chains of post and wire and 11.5 chains of post and rail. He valued his improvements at £179 and expenses at £235. He was issued a further lease for 14 years.4

Land-NoteJan 1894 Peter Pither sent a letter to the Lands Department stating that he was unable to pay his rent. One of his four children had been ill and the doctor's account was as much as one year's rent. He had been unlucky with his cows. Nevertheless he sent £4/9/6. The department assessor visited him and concluded that Pither was in very bad circumstances and was earning only 15/- a week. The price of cows had dropped, and the council who were going to pay him £5 for a road through his land were not paying him at this stage. Pither decided that he could not carry on and transferred his lease in Oct 1895, when he owed £30.4

  • 25 Jul 1894: Berwick Shire Council 21 Jul 1894. Cr. Goff reported that he had seen Mr. Pithers with reference to the exchange of the old road for a new one. Mr. Pithers would be satistied if the exchange were made and £5 paid him, the council to pay cost of transfer.—On the motion of Crs Brisbane and Robinson the arrangement was agreed to, and it was resolved that the road be surveyed and the transfer made.15

  • 9 Nov 1901: Death from Exposure and Bronchitis.—
    An inquest was held at "The College Arms," Wokingham-road, on Saturday, on the body of Charles Pither, a retired butler, aged 75, who was found in a dying condition at his residence on the previous Thursday morning. Peter Pither, a lodging-house-keeper of London, brother of the deceased, said the latter lived alone, his wife having died three years ago. Witness last saw him in August, and he then appeared in his usual health. He had no children.—Dr. Abram said he had known the man for about 4 1/2 years. Witness attended him last September. On Thursday morning witness was called and found him lying on a bed in the parlour. He was semi-conscious and very cold and exhausted. There was a bruise on the right side of the face and chest, and deceased suffered considerable pain on moving his right arm, but there was no fracture or paralysis. He developed a good deal of bronchitis, and never recovering, died from exposure and bronchitis. He told witness he fell and witness thought this produced unconsciousness.—William Frederick Pym, milkman, deposed that on Friday morning he and a neighbour got into the home and found the deceased lying on his stomach on the floor of the washouse, with his head resting on a candlestick. By his side was a small bottle of glycerine. A chair had fallen near the deceased's feet.—Gertrude Moss, wife of Ernest Hy. Moss, a clerk living next door, said he had known the deceased for five years, and she last saw him out of doors on the previous Monday morning. Deceased was of a very happy disposition and seemed comfortably off. The Jury found that the deceased died from exposure and bronchitis after an accidental fall.17

  • 9 May 1882: SCALDED TO DEATH. Dr Youl held an inquest at Carlton on Monday on the body of a child named William Edward Pither, aged five years, the son of Peter Pither, a farmer. The evidence went to show that the mother was in the act of bathing her children on Saturday night, and sat the deceased on a chair beside the fire. When in the act of carrying out the bath she heard a scream, and upon turning round saw the deceased had fallen, and pulled the kettle of boiling water over him. She took him to the hospital, where the wounds were dressed. He progressed favourably until noon next day, when a change took place, and death ensued in a few hours. Dr Snowball gave evidence that death resulted from the scald, and a verdict to that effect was returned.6
  • 20 May 1882: William Edward Pither, five years old, child of Peter Pither, a farmer, was killed a fortnight ago by accidentally pulling over a kettle of boiling water.7

In reference to the refusal to grant me a lease for the 40 acres held by me under licence I beg to submit the following.
In regard to the objection as to non-fulfilment of residence clause I have had my wife and family residing there for five years and have spent the whole of my earnings in making it a home, but not being a man of means have to work for wages to keep things going as there is no hope of making a living off the land for some time to come. It is my only real residence. My temporary quarters in Richmond being very unenjoyable without the company of my wife and children and you may be sure I take every opportunity of being with them. I have endeavoured to fulfil in every particular the conditions of licence in a straightforward manner having put all the improvements on the land the value being far in excess of what is required and thinking there would be no doubt of the lease being granted have just gone to the expense of ploughing the land for the next crop.
As I told you this morning I have spent all I have on the place and was under the impression that all conditions were carried out faithfully.
The land is fenced as the statement shows. One acre is planted with fruit trees which are bearing this season and have also grown potatoes, oats and kitchen garden produce the result of which is very small owing to the poor nature of the ground but continued working is improving it and I hoped next year to receive some benefit from it.
I have worked hard on the place myself in finishing the house, gardening, and grubbing and clearing the land. There are about 4 acres ready for the plough but owing to the dry season just passed the bullocks could not break it. So have had to wait for the wet season otherwise it would have been cultivated before applying for the lease.
I wish to say that the district values have increased my rates from 10/- to 50/- per year showing that considerable improvement has been made.
Also as regards the genuineness of my family's residence I would mention that my last child was born there some 15 months ago.
I have sold the property owned by me in Richmond at the time of my selecting so that I now have no other interest than at Gembrook.
I send this as you advised this morning withthe hope that it will be deemed a full satisfactory explanation and that you will see your way clear to grant me the lease.

  • 13 Jan 1853: SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE. ARRIVED. January 12.—Try, ship, 774 tons, Joseph Samson, commander, from Bristol October 12th. Passengers, cabin—Seven, and two hundred and forty-four in the intermediate and steerage. J Samson, agent.25
  • 14 Jan 1853: The Try, from Bristol, has made a very fair passage and had it not been for a succession of calms when near the line the time occupied would have been much short. The above vessel was to be followed from Bristol by the Elizabeth ship, Elizabeth barque, Clara Symes, and Mary Anne, to leave all in October.26
  • 18 Dec 1876: THE VOLUNTEERS.
    An official inspection of the East Melbourne Artillery took place on Saturday afternoon. The battery paraded at the orderly-room, Eastern-hill, from whence they marched to the Corporation paddock, on the Yarra Bank, the use of which had been obtained by the commanding officer, Major Stokes. Six guns, fully manned and provided with ten rounds of ammunition each, were taken into the field, and a number of manoeuvres were satisfactorily effected in quick time. The officers in attendance were Major Stokes (in command), Captain Brown, Lieutenant Ballenger, and Sergeant-major Wilkins. The inspecting officers were Colonel Anderson, Colonel Mair, Colonol Le Marchand, Major J. A. Anderson, Captain Stubbs, and Lieutenant Foote. The parade state showed the number present to be 5 officers, 5 sergeants, and 76 rank and file.
    The inspecting officers present at the official inspection of the East Melbourne Artillery, after leaving that corps, proceeded to the ground of the Engineer Corps, which was also inspected by them, and a satisfactory opinion was expressed of the progress made by the members of the corps. The manœuvres performed were of the ordinary character.
    The following promotions in the East Melbourne Artillery have been gazetted Staff-Sergeant Richard Birkett Empson to be battery sergeant-major ; and Corporal S. C. Lewis to be sergeant.27
  • 20 Apr 1877: NO. 10,107.—TRANSFER Of LAND STATUTE.—SAMUEL CHARLES LEWIS, of 75 Victoria-street, in the City of Collingwood, county of Bourke, Organ Builder, has applied to bring the land described at the foot hereof under the above Statute ; and the Commissioner of Titles has directed notice of the application to be advertised in The Herald newspaper, and has appointed fourteen days from such advertisement, after which time the land will be brought under the operation of the Statute, unless a caveat shall be lodged forbidding the same.

  • 23 Aug 1902: Possible match: 'B' Battery.
    On Wednesday last a complimentary smoke night was tendered at the rooms of the B Battery to Sergeant Major Lewis and Farrier Quarter Master Sergeant Robertson. The former has been transferred to another branch of the service, and the latter has retired. The Sergeant Major has had 31 years continual service in the Field Artillery, having joined the old East Melbourne Volunteer Artillery, and subsequently joined the B Battery as Sergeant Major. F.Q.M. Sergeant Robertson joined the B Battery in 1868, the same year as the Sergeant-Major, but was out for a period of two years, when he rejoined on the formation of the Militia.
    The chair was occupied by Captain Rivett, and amongst the officers present were Colonel Johnson, Adjutant Mailer, Captain Wollaston, and Lieutenant Dunham.
    On behalf of the members of the Battery, the chairman presented Sergeant-Major Lewis with a gold albert and locket, suitably inscribed, and in doing so highly eulogised the special qualities of the recipient as a soldier and a man ; the members of the Battery were extremely sorry to lose him. Farrier-Sergt. Robertson received a suitably inscribed marble dock, the chairman making allusion to the recipient's long and honorable career with the Battery. Both the recipients appropriately responded.
    The healths of Colonel Johnson and Adjutant Mailer, who had returned from South Africa by the Drayton Orange, were drunk with enthusiasm.
    Other toasts were honored, and the proceedings, which were of a very pleasant character throughout, concluded with the singing of "God Save the King."
    A musical programme was gone through, Mr C. Metcher acting as accompanist, and those who gave items were Sergeant Kenna, Gunner Daniells, Drivers Callan (2), Messrs J. Campbell, Waugh, Chiltron and T. Morphet.
    A committee of Sergeants ably managed the proceedings, with Corp Fred. Youl as treasurer.29
  • 14 Dec 1903: Possible match: CAVALRY ROUTE MARCH.
    MENTONE, Sunday - A detachment of the Melbourne Cavalry under the command of Captain Rushall with of Captain Strong, medical officer, Lieutenants Gordon and Wilson, and Sergeant Major Lewis, started by route march under service conditions from the Victoria Barracks on Saturday afternoon, and bivouacked in the grandstand at the local racecourse early this morning a course of troops drill was gone through, after which there was a church parade to St Augustine's Church. A return was made to the city at 5 o'clock. Everything in the outing was strictly under service condition.30

  • 22 Apr 1905: Possible match: SERGEANT-MAJOR INJURED.
    Sergeant-major Lewis, belonging to the instructional staff, was put quite out of action at the forthcoming camp operations by an accident which befel him this morning. He was attending to the trucking of horses at Caulfield, when one of them broke away from the truck and jumped on him, the result being a compound fracture of the left leg.32
  • 29 Apr 1905: Possible match: A SERGEANT-MAJOR INJURED.
    An unfortunate accident occurred whilst the artillery were being entrained at Caulfield. Sergeant-Major Lewis, of the instructional staff, was assisting to get the horses on the train. He was near the door of a truck when a restive animal backed out of it, knocking the sergeant-major down very violently.
    It was at once seen that he was seriously injured. Surgeon Major Featherstone, who was on the spot found that his right leg was badly broken, and had him sent by train to town. Dr Featherstone advised Colonel C. S. Ryan by wire of the occurrence, and the latter had the train met by an ambulance van and the sufferer conveyed io the Melbourne Hospital.
    It was here found by Colonel Ryan that there was a compound fracture of the leg, and of so serious a character that the doctor fears the limb will have to be amputated.
    News of the accident was received at the barracks with very great regret, as Sergeant-Major Lewis is a painstaking and popular officer.33
  • 29 Apr 1905: Possible match: At Caulfield station Sergeant-Major Lewis was assisting to put some artillery horses in a horse box, when, as he was putting on the half door which hinges upwards from the bottom of the vehicle, a horse backed on to it and, forcing the half door on to Sergeant-Major Lewis's knee, broke his leg at the ankle and forced the leg bones through the skin until they were sticking out over his boot. Sergeant-Major Lewis was promptly attended to by Surgeon-Major Fetherston, and was then sent in to Melbourne in an artillery ambulance detached to go by the next train townwards. He was met at Princes-bridge station by Dr Charles Ryan. The utmost regret was expressed by Lieutenant-Colonel Ballenger and his staff for Mr Lewis, he having been for long associated with the artillery, as an instructor.34

Samuel Charles Lewis was a school teacher at Colac when he enlisted on 20 Mar 1915. He was a 2nd Lieutenant with the 13th Light Horse Regiment, Headquarters and Machine Gun Section. His unit embarked from Melbourne on 28 May 1915 on board A34 Persic. He returned to Australia on 27 April 1919 as a captain of the 2nd Artillery division. He was mentioned in despatches, but not awarded a medal.1

Military*12 Nov 1942Enlisted for military service: He enlisted with the Royal Australian Air Force on 12th November 1942 and he was allocated service number 120779. Joseph trained as a Technical Wireless Assistant and he served within Australia and the South West Pacific with 82nd Squadron. He was discharged on 30th January 1946, and after the war he lived at Lewis Road in Upper Beaconsfield. During the Ash Wednesday Bush fires on 16th February 1982 he suffered total loss of his home which destroyed his Military Medals. Through the help of the RSL he replied for replacements in 1984.

“Joe” was born in Dunolly in 1909, being the eldest child in a family of 12. Soon after the family moved to Robinvale, where he spent his childhood. He commenced his working life when a teenager in a local store. During the depression he had to go to N.S.W. to obtain work. Returning to Victoria, he accepted a job with Bert Wain in Upper Beaconsfield. A short time later he was offered and accepted a position with Tom Black, and in 1938 married Tom’s daughter Ethel Janet (Black).
In 1941 he joined the Air Force as ground crew and served in Borneo and Morotai.
In 1946 he returned to Upper Beaconsfield and Tom Black built the young couple a house. He again helped Tom for a time but there was not enough work for two, so Joe started a job with H.J. Heinz. When the Cardinia Dam was started in 1969, Joe decided to work there, and stayed until the job was finished. He was then 64, but continued to do casual work until he was 82. Joe was athletic and played football, cricket, golf and tennis well. He loved the Dewhurst area and was Treasurer of the New Hall Committee and Secretary of the Hall.
A happy and cheerful man, he and Ethel had a daughter and five grandchildren. All have done well, and he was justifiably proud of them. There are also three great grandchildren.2
