Newspaper-Articles

  • 7 Jan 1910: OBITUARY. MR. THOMAS BATES.
A very old colonist and pioneer, Mr. Thomas Bates, passed away on Friday, December 31st; at Metung, Gippsland Lakes, in his eighty-fifth year. The late Mr. Bates, who was closely associated with Geelong and district for more than half a century, was born at Leeds, Yorkshire, England, and arrived, with his parents at Launceston, Tasmania, at Christmas, 1829, the family crossing to Port Phillip (landing at Point Henry) in 1836. No doubt he will be remembered by many still living in the Geelong district, although he removed, with his family to Gippsland about 20 years ago.
When quite a young man he was appointed a provincial magistrate, and for very many years occupied a seat on the Bench at Drysdale, Geelong and other centres. He held Duck Ponds station, Station Peak, Lara, for many years—the original run taken up by his father including the site where Geelong now stands. Mr. Bates and his brothers also held "Kaladbro," Mount Gambier, and Guichen Bay, South Australia. He discovered and developed the Clifton Springs, Drysdale, where he resided for 25 years. The lifetime of the deceased gentleman in Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia covers a period of 81 years, and he passed through most of the stirring events of the early days.4
