PALE orchid mauve set off by deeper mauve fuchsias, and pansies was chosen by Miss Kathleen Gladys Cronin, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Laurence Kimberly Cronin, of "Struan," Hillside Parade, South Camberwell, for her bridesmaids' frocks, when she married Mr Eric Crellin Kermode, eldest son of the late Mr Eric Kermode, and of Mrs Kermode, of "Zelk,' Douglas Street, East Malvern, and late of Tasmania. The wedding took place on April 13 at the Melbourne Grammar School Chapel, and was celebrated by the Rev. P. St. T. Wilson.
The bride's frock was fashioned of parchment satin, which moulded the figure and flared out into a long train. Her veil of soft parchment tulle was caught to her head with a halo of orange blossom.
The bridesmaids were the Misses Audrey Cronin, Peggy Cronin, and Elsie Manton, and the five-year-old trainbearer was little Ruth Cronin. Their orchid tulle frocks were extremely full below the knees and graduated into small trains. Their flowers matched the velvet sashes of their frocks. Black opal brooches were worn by the elder bridesmaids, while both Peggy and Ruth Cronin wore wristlet watches—the gifts of the bridegroom. The best man was Mr Lewis Kermode and Mr Tom Raynes Dickson acted as groomsman.
A wedding dinner which was afterwards followed by a dance was held at 9 Darling Street.4

    Mr Edmund La Touche Armstrong died at his home, Leven, Bates st, East Malvern, on Tuesday after a short illness.
    He was from 1896 to 1925 chief librarian and secretary of the Public Library, Museums, and National Gallery of Victoria. The late Mr Armstrong was born at Herne Hill, Geelong, in 1864, and was the fourth son of the late Mr John Simpson Armstrong, of the Irish and Victorian Bars, and a former Crown prosecutor in Victoria, and the late Mrs Alice Armstrong.
    Before the present Public Library was built the late Mr Armstrong, at the request of the trustees, went abroad to investigate modern public libraries in Europe and USA. The Melbourne Public Library, which was erected soon after his return, incorporates many features for which he was mainly responsible.
    He was the oldest member of the Wallaby Club, and was also a member of the Yorick Club, the Metropolitan, Golf Club, and the Royal Empire Society. He was unmarried.
    The funeral yesterday at Springvale Crematorium was private.9

Australian Dictionary of Biography

ARMSTRONG, EDMUND LA TOUCHE (1864-1946), librarian, was born on 12 August 1864 at Herne Hill, Geelong, Victoria, fourth son of John Simpson Armstrong (d.1884), barrister, crown prosecutor and acting judge of the County Court, and his wife Alice, née O'Dell. His parents had migrated to Victoria from Ireland in 1858. Sixth of ten children, Edmund was educated at Scotch College, Melbourne, and studied part time at the University of Melbourne (LL.B., 1893; M.A., 1899).
Armstrong joined the Public Library of Victoria in December 1881 as a junior assistant at a salary of £50. By 1891 he was listed as assistant at £300 and by 1895 was principal assistant in the reference library. On 29 August 1896, after the premature death of M. F. Dowden, he was appointed librarian and secretary to the trustees of the Public Library, Museums, and National Gallery of Victoria. According to his memoirs he then decided not to practise at the Bar but to assist the trustees 'to carry on the work of the institution'. On his retirement on 30 April 1925 it was recorded that he had served conscientiously and diligently and had 'proved himself not only a learned and accomplished librarian, but also a most capable administrator'.
Armstrong opposed separation of the four sister institutions. He looked back to Sir Redmond Barry's concept and to the British Museum's model of a display of knowledge, creation and achievement all in the one institution: he was a curator of knowledge rather than a disseminator of information. His name will always be associated with the octagonal, domed reading-room, suggested by him in 1905 and opened on 14 November 1913. Although he intended it to incorporate the best features of the British Museum and Library of Congress reading-rooms, it was criticized from the outset as being inefficient with regard to space, lighting, heating and comfort.
Much, however, was achieved while Armstrong was chief librarian: grants from the government and gifts from the Felton Bequest enabled the library to grow in size and prestige. The Dewey decimal system of classification was introduced in the lending library in 1899 and in the reference library in 1910-15, the travelling libraries were revived and expanded in the 1900s and the country lending service began in 1920. He was secretary of the Library Association of Australasia in 1896-1902 and editor of the Library Record of Australasia in 1901-02. He was also the author and co-author of two carefully compiled histories of the library, museums and gallery covering the period 1856-1931.
Armstrong did not marry and gave much of his life to his work. In recreation, he was a member of the Wallaby (walking) Club (and by 1946 its oldest member), the Yorick and the Metropolitan Golf clubs and the Royal Empire Society. He was respected widely although his natural reserve and caution made him seem remote from his staff. His tall figure and regular features gave him a dignified appearance which matched his courteous demeanour and tactful and conservative attitudes. He died of coronary vascular disease at his home at East Malvern on 15 October 1946 and was privately cremated at Springvale. A portrait by Bernard Hall is in the State Library of Victoria.10

  • 18 Aug 1884: Mr John Simpson Armstrong, who was for a long time Crown prosecutor, died at his residence, Burwood road, Hawthorn, on Friday last. Mr Armstrong was the fifth son of the late Captain Thomas Armstrong, of Tullygullen and Lackamore, Ireland, and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1832. Choosing to follow the profession of the law, he was admitted a member of the Irish bar, and practised for several years in the Four Courts, Dublin, and on the Munster circuit, during which time he held several Government appointments, amongst others having reported the trial of the famous Daniel O'Connell and the sittings of the Special Commission of 1848. In 1855 he married a daughter of the late Major O'Dell, of the "Fighting Fifth," by whom he has had 10 children, all of whom survive him. Shortly after his marriage he decided to come out to this colony, and before sailing was presented with a valuable service of plate and an address, signed by between 60 and 70 of the leading members of the Irish bench and bar, amongst whom he had many friends. Soon after his arrival he was appointed to succeed the late Mr John Atkins, as prosecutor for the Queen, which office he held until last year, when compelled to resign by failing health. Mr Armstrong was buried on Saturday afternoon in the Kew Cemetery, the funeral being strictly private, in accordance with the wishes of his family.6
