  • 22 Jan 1960: Sad Drowning Fatality at Pakenham
    Pakenham was saddened last Friday afternoon by the news that Mr. Allen Martin, of Croydon, was drowned whilst swimming in a dam at "Caversham Heights," Pakenham, on the property of his grandfather, Mr. H. Martin, where he was employed as a farm-hand. Allen Martin, who was 18 years of age, was swimming with five others in the dam. At the time, however, they were at the opposite end of the dam to him and no one noticed him go down. Senior Constable J. Iskov and First Constable P. Palmer were notified, and in turn immediately notified Dandonong police. In response to this call Constable P. McFarlane and Senior Patrolman Claude Quist, set out three minutes after receiving the call and in the dash out to Toomuc Valley on the police motor cycle outfit at times they travelled at 85 m.p.h.
    Meanwhile, the two police officers and other members at the party were making strenuous efforts by diving to locate the body, but without succcess. There was a splendid local response to Constable Iskov's appeal for assistance in the rescue efforts, and amongst those who co-operated in this direction were Messrs. Keith Murphy, John van do Heyden and Jack Donker. Patrolman Claude Quist recovered the body in about 16 feet of water. Despite strenuous and prolonged efforts at rescusitation the lad failed to respond.2
