  • 17 Jun 1896: INSOLVENCY OF A. E. KITCHEN. - LIABILITIES £11,587 : DEFICIENCY £6,581.
    The schedule of Alfred Ernest Kitchen, formerly of Pakenham, farmer, but now of Flinders-lane, Melbourne, commercial traveller, was filed yesterday at the Insolvency Court. The causes of insolvency are set down as - Losses on farming operations, depreciation in the value of real estate, and failure of persons jointly liable with insolvent to meet their engagements. Liabilities, £41,585 17s. 9d; assets, £35,001 ; deficiency-, £6,584 17s. 9d. Debts due upon mortgage, £40,200: debts due to unsecured creditors, £1,370 17s. 9d; debts due to other secured creditors, £15.

    Value at present of real property, £33,000; personal property not held as security, £1. Principal secured creditors:-The Union Trustee Company of Australia Limited, Collins-street, Melbourne, £40,000 mortgage over freehold property at Pakenham ; Federal Bank of Australia Limited (in liquidation), Queen-street. Melbourne, £1,370 17s. 9d., amount due on promissory note. The insolvent's rent property, valued at £35,000 in the schedule, is described as freehold land at Pakenham, known as "Greenhill's Estate," and containing about 3,000 acres, held by insolvent jointly with others. The insolvent's estate is placed under sequestration in the hands of Mr. Jas. Shackell, assignee.14
  • 20 Apr 1936: OBITUARY. Mr. Alfred Ernest Kitchen died suddenly at his home on the Toomuc apple estate, Pakenham, on Saturday. He was aged 69 years. He was formerly associated with the businesses of J. Kitchen and Sons Pty. Ltd. and Cuming, Smith, and Co. Pty. Ltd., and was well known in sporting circles. The estate at Pakenham was established by Mr. Kitchen's father, Mr. J. A Kitchen, more than 50 years ago. Mr. Kitchen had been living there for some time. He has left a widow, who was the daughter of the late Mr. William Meudell who was manager of the Bank of Vitoria, Collins street. The funeral will leave Sleight's chapel, Flinders street, at 3.30 pm. to-day for the Box Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being made by A. A. Sleight Pty. Ltd.15

  • 13 Oct 1906: KITCHEN— BRUFORD.
    The Advent Church, Malvern, was the scene of a picturesque wedding on Wednesday afternoon, when Mr. Frederick W. Kitchen was married to Miss Myra A. Bruford. The Ven. Archdeacon Beamish, assisted by Canon Godby and the Rev. Mr. Redhead, performed the wedding ceremony. The church was charmingly decorated with arum lilies and other white flowers, combined with graceful foliage. The bride, who was given away by her father, was gowned in white silk, trimmed with handsome Limerick lace. She was attended by Miss Effie Bruford, Miss Margery Bruford, Miss Kathleen Downer and Miss Joyce Bruford. They were gowned in white crystaline, trimmed with Malines lace, veils under pink wreaths, and carried pink wreaths, and carried "Ronalds" bouquets. The Rev. G. A. Kitchen, M.A., acted as best man; and Mr. Brett as groomsman. After the wedding a reception was held at the residence of the bride's parents. The bridal party received in the drawingroom, which was prettily decorated. A white lattice was included in the scheme. Wedding breakfast was served in a marquee on the lawn, Di Gilio's band providing music. Many handsome wedding presents were received. A large number of guests was present at the reception.14
  • 20 Mar 1940: Having collapsed at his office, Mr. Frederick William Kitchen, managing director and chairman of J. Kitchen and Sons Pty. Ltd., died at his home in Sorrett avenue, Malvern, yesterday. He was aged 61 years.
    The business was founded by Mr. Kitchen's grandfather, and was carried on his his father. When Lever Bros. Ltd., of England, acquired an interest in this business, following a visit to Australia of the first Lord Leverhulme, Mr. F. W. Kitchen was asked in 1924 to take charge of the whole of the Lever interests in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Seas.
    Mr. Kitchen played a leading part in the development of the Victorian Chamber of Manufactures. He had been a member of the council of the Chamber since 1904, and was elected president in 1933 and 1934. He was chairman of the committee which conducted the All-Australian Centenary Exhibition in Melbourne, while president of the Associated Chambers of Manufacture. Mr. Kitchen went abroad on official business in 1935, and was appointed by the Commonwealth Government to act as the representative of Australian employers at the International Labour Convention held in Geneva. Since 1925 Mr. Kitchen had been an active member of the board of the Alfred Hospital.
    Mr. Kitchen played golf, and was a keen patron of the Victorian Turf. Horses which he owned had many important successes. He is survived by a son, Mr. Frederick Burford Kitchen, and a daughter, Barbara (Mrs. Peter Fitzgerald).
    The funeral arrangements are being made by A. A. Sleight Pty. Ltd.15,16
  • 2 Dec 1940: PAKENHAM SALE - The sale has been completed of the Toomuc Valley Orchards, comprising 1,004 acres, improvements, and plant, at Pakenham. The price has not been disclosed, but is understood to be about £7,000. The vendors were the trustees of the estate of the late Mr. F. W. Kitchen.17

Upper Beaconsfield

In the late eighteen-seventies John Ambrose and Theo Kitchen built holiday homes on neighbouring hills in the Toomuc Valley to the north of Beaconsfield. They owned a large area of land in the valley and on adjoining slopes, and at one time had a very large dairy farm and butter factory. John Ambrose also owned in the valley an extensive apple orchard with its own cool stores and an important export business shipping apples to England.
Kitchen Road was named after the Kitchen brothers.1

    All that Piece of LAND, near PAKENHAM being Allotment 16, parish of Gembrook, containing 235 acres 1 rood 20 perches, and known as Wright's Paddock, sheep-proof fences, two rails, three wires.
    It has a frontage to a permanent running creek, and the character of the soil is dark chocolate and black rich volcanic. About 100 acres have been cultivated, and nearly the whole farm has been cleared.
    It is situated six miles from Pakenham railway station, and the roads are perfect. There are few better farms in Victoria, and the mortgagees have determined to sell. Samples of the soil can be seen at our office.

The residence contains seven rooms a large hall, besides two pantries, kitchen, bathroom, sçullery. There is a verandah 9ft. wide all round. The outhouses consist of stables, buggy shed fowlhouses, also a six-roomed home for servants. There are two creeks through the property, and a nice fern-tree gully.
    As the mortgagee is determined to sell, a bargain may be looked for.
    The house is weatherboard, lath and plastered.
