  • 3 Jun 1885: BERWICK SUNDAY SCHOOL TEA MEETING. The annual tea meeting and distribution of prizes to the children attending the Christ Churchof England Sunday school took place on Monday evening, the 25th May. For some considerable time past a special effort was made to obtain contributions for this purpose, and Mrs. Hill, Miss Vaile, Miss Frances Elmes and Mr. Michael Elmes succeeded in getting over £12. At an early hour on the morning of the treat Mr. Elmes, the superintendant, was seen with a horse and dray busily engaged conveying forms, fern trees, baskets of crockery and a lot of other things, towards the Temperance hall, and making great preparations for what was to follow. The internal arrangements were then seen to, and took some time to complete. They were no easy task, especially decorating the room with flowers, ferns, and evergreens, by Miss Vaile, who was assisted by some of the senior scholars. At four o'clock the children, numbering forty-two, took their seats at the tables under the guidance of their teachers. The tables were presided over by Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Mackinnon, Mrs. Browning and Miss Vaile. Miss Frances Elmes and Miss Cook, and were further adorned with some beautiful bouquets of flowers, which had been given by Mr. Kent. During the tea the Rev. Mr. Hill and Messrs. Hammond, Harold Vaile and Elmes assisted the ladies con siderably, in fact were kept going the whole time refilling plate after plate with scones, cakes, &c., Miss Coleman and Mrs. Taylor assisting. After the tea and everything had been cleared away, the Rev. Mr. Hill and Mrs. Hill distributed the prizes to the various winners (want of space prevents us from publishing the list in full), but before doing so Mr. Hill addressed the children and reminded them of their reason for meeting there that evening ; of the great obligations they were under to the superintendent and his excellent staff of teachers; that the teachers have been most painstaking, de nying themselves a great deal, and have produced such results as have never been attained at that school before; that the children who have obtained prizes this year should not regard them for their intrinsic value, but as an acknowledgment from their teachers for their past attention to lessons and good behavior, and those who have not been so fortunate should not be dishartened, but should strain every effort to carry off the prizes next year. Special prizes were awarded to Eugene Taylor, a the most regularly attending scholar in the school, and consisted of a handsome bible given by Mr. Fossey; to Lottie Shrapnel, for regular attendance, awarded by the superintendent, Mr. Elmes; and also one to Benjamin Cook, for good conduct. During the distribu tion of prizes Mr. Hammond, the head teacher, was engaged erecting a sciopticon, which was kindly lent for the occasion by Mr. S. Staughton, M.P. Mr. Hammond afterwards exhibited some very appropriate pictures, amongst which was "Blue Beard," and all of which amused the children greatly. As each picture ap peared it was well explained by the Rev. Mr. Hill, Mr. Elmes, and Mr. Harold Vaile, each relieving the other occasion ally. After passing a most enjoyable even ing the children gave cheers for their superintendent, teachers, the Rev.   • 3 Jun 1885: BERWICK SUNDAY SCHOOL TEA MEETING. The annual tea meeting and distribution of prizes to the children attending the Christ Churchof England Sunday school took place on Monday evening, the 25th May. For some considerable time past a special effort was made to obtain contributions for this purpose, and Mrs. Hill, Miss Vaile, Miss Frances Elmes and Mr. Michael Elmes succeeded in getting over £12. At an early hour on the morning of the treat Mr. Elmes, the superintendant, was seen with a horse and dray busily engaged conveying forms, fern trees, baskets of crockery and a lot of other things, towards the Temperance hall, and making great preparations for what was to follow. The internal arrangements were then seen to, and took some time to complete. They were no easy task, especially decorating the room with flowers, ferns, and evergreens, by Miss Vaile, who was assisted by some of the senior scholars. At four o'clock the children, numbering forty-two, took their seats at the tables under the guidance of their teachers. The tables were presided over by Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Mackinnon, Mrs. Browning and Miss Vaile. Miss Frances Elmes and Miss Cook, and were further adorned with some beautiful bouquets of flowers, which had been given by Mr. Kent. During the tea the Rev. Mr. Hill and Messrs. Hammond, Harold Vaile and Elmes assisted the ladies con siderably, in fact were kept going the whole time refilling plate after plate with scones, cakes, &c., Miss Coleman and Mrs. Taylor assisting. After the tea and everything had been cleared away, the Rev. Mr. Hill and Mrs. Hill distributed the prizes to the various winners (want of space prevents us from publishing the list in full), but before doing so Mr. Hill addressed the children and reminded them of their reason for meeting there that evening ; of the great obligations they were under to the superintendent and his excellent staff of teachers; that the teachers have been most painstaking, de nying themselves a great deal, and have produced such results as have never been attained at that school before; that the children who have obtained prizes this year should not regard them for their intrinsic value, but as an acknowledgment from their teachers for their past attention to lessons and good behavior, and those who have not been so fortunate should not be dishartened, but should strain every effort to carry off the prizes next year. Special prizes were awarded to Eugene Taylor, a the most regularly attending scholar in the school, and consisted of a handsome bible given by Mr. Fossey; to Lottie Shrapnel, for regular attendance, awarded by the superintendent, Mr. Elmes; and also one to Benjamin Cook, for good conduct. During the distribu tion of prizes Mr. Hammond, the head teacher, was engaged erecting a sciopticon, which was kindly lent for the occasion by Mr. S. Staughton, M.P. Mr. Hammond afterwards exhibited some very appropriate pictures, amongst which was "Blue Beard," and all of which amused the children greatly. As each picture ap peared it was well explained by the Rev. Mr. Hill, Mr. Elmes, and Mr. Harold Vaile, each relieving the other occasion ally. After passing a most enjoyable even ing the children gave cheers for their superintendent, teachers, the Rev. Mr. Hill, and Mr. Staughton, and when the National Anthem had been sung the meet ing broke up, it being about eight o'clock.   • 10 Feb 1881: On Tuesday evening, a young woman named Maria Revello staying at the Crown Hotel, Lilydale, was taken suddenly ill and shortly afterwards died. She previously stated that she had taken strychnine in consequence of Constable O'Callaghan, to whom she was engaged, refusing to marry her. Dr Elmes, the only medical practitioner at Lilydale, was sent for but was absent from home. The deceased had recently come from Gipps Land, and had told her mother that she would commit suicide unless O'Callaghan fulfilled his promise An inquest is to be held.9
  • 27 Feb 1885: In the County Court, yesterday, before Judge Casey and a jury of four, a domestic servant named Mary Ann Lithgow sought to recover from Mr. Wm. Elms, as executor of the estate of the late Dr. Elms, of Lillydale, the sum of £235 10s., being the amount alleged to be due to her for nine years and three weeks' service at 10s. per week. The plaintiff's case was that she had entered the late Dr Elms's service nearly ten years ago as domestic servant, at 10s. per week. Occasionally she received small sums on account, but at the time of her employer's death he was indebted to her the sum claimed. The defence was that the plaintiff was a cousin of Mrs. Elms, and had gone to reside with her and the deceased doctor at the former's invitation, and further that if a contract had been made the plaintiff was barred by statute from recovering part of the debt. The jury found for the plaintiff for £65, costs to be taxed. Mr. Hood appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. Isaacs for the defendant. Hester Brown Elmes10

  • 9 Nov 1883: BUILDING SOCIETIES.
    The annual meeting of the shareholders in the Universal Permanent Building and Investment Society was held on Wednesday afternoon. The chair was occupied by Captain M'Callum, the president ot the society. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet congratulated the shareholders on the progress which the society had made during the past year. It would be seen from the balance sheet that the profits on the society's business during the year had amounted to 10 per cent. A dividend of 8 per cent had been declared ; £250 had been added to the reserve fund, making a total of £1,250 ; and £1,357 2s. 8d. was carried forward, to be distributed as a bonus in two years time. The motion for the adoption of the report was carried. The president, vice-president, auditors, one steward (Mr F. G. Hooke) and three members of committee (Messrs William Elms, Emanuel King, and Francis M. White), were re-elected without opposition. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting. Ship The family decided to emigrate to Van Diemen's Land. Very fortuitously, their initial travel plans were thwarted… At first they had intended to leave Liverpool on board "The Hibernian", but were unable to secure passage in time for its departure, so they were forced to wait several weeks for another vessel. They subsequently set sail, but their ship met a violent storm in the Bay of Biscay and nearly foundered, so the captain returned the ship to Liverpool, where "the old tub" was condemned. Whilst waiting (for two months) for yet another vessel, the Hale family learned that "The Hibernian" had caught fire at sea, and of the several hundred aboard, only about sixty people were saved. Their third voyage, aboard the "Princess Elizabeth", was also unsuccessful… a storm blew the vessel onto the Cheshire coast, and after the passengers and cargo were removed, she was towed back to Liverpool and declared unseaworthy. Two months later, the Hale family's fourth journey was delayed when their ship, the "Lady East", hit a sand bank near Liverpool … after being dislodged by a high tide, she was returned to the dock for inspection…there was no damage, so the ship was allowed to sail. It had taken a weary wait of eight months, but the Hale family's trip was finally 'underway'.

In her will (written in 1876) she states that she leaves her property to her mother, but should her mother die before her, the house should be sold and converted into cash to be divided between her brothers and sister. In a codicil written in 1878, she devises that her mother should only have a life interest, and that after her death it should be divided between her siblings except George Washington Robinson. Her half-sister Emma Mills is not mentioned.1

(Witness) Notebt 1910 - 1920 Alexander Fraser. These names appear on a number of titles of orchard properties between 1910 and 1920. These men all seem to have been connected to the Pakington-street Methodist Church and/or the Sons of Temperance Lodge/Friendly Society.
