Village Bell* | Mar 1980 | CITIZENS OF THE YEAR This year, the Association has broken with tradition and chosen two Upper Beaconsfield "Citizens of the Year". On behalf of all the citizens of Upper Beaconsfield, congratulations to JOHN and TERRY MILLIGAN of Hughenden Road, who have been associated with the district for very many years, during which time they have contributed in a dedicated but modest manner to the well-being of this community. John has been closely involved with the U. B. Association and the Berwick-Pakenham Historical Society, while Terry has been actively associated with the Red Cross and the Fire Brigade Auxiliary. Their contributions go deeper than this, however, offering as they have friendship and encouragement to very many people in Upper Beaconsfield. Once again, our sincere congratulations. It is pleasing to report that one of those nominations, Mr. Barry Smith, has been successful. Congratulations are to be extended to Barry who has worked tirelessly and quietly for the Scouting organisation for many years. Special mention also to John Milligan (already a UBA citizen of the year) who has also now gained a Shire award. Well deserved!! Barry William Smith11 |

(Mentioned) Village Bell | Apr 1994 | Hughendon Road Locality When my wife and I acquired our property, now 68 Hughendon Road, in 1958, the road was only constructed a few yards further, to what was then the Schreppel’s place, now No 75. Noel Schreppel told us that it was make up to that point when the Beaconsfield Reservoir was built after World War I. Along the north-east boundary of his land, at a slant from the road, was a track and a horse tramway, used for carrying tools and materials down to the dam works in the Haunted Gully. Traces of the track could still be seen. There was then no Hughendon Road pumping station, and no secure fence around the State Rivers reservoir property. People went there shooting, bathing and picnicking. O’Neil road was only made up from Telegraph Road as far as the present No 555. It recommenced at “Bimbimbe” at the corner of Bowman Road. In the gap there were merely tracks through the trees, only fit for horses and motor-cycles. The gaps in O’Neil and Hughendon Roads were improved with roads after the 1961/62 bushfires. The intersection of O’Neil and Hughendon Roads was known as Paget’s Gate. As a youth, Schreppel and friends used to cycle from the city to spend weekends here, sleeping in a rotunda at the top of the “Quamby Estate” above Quamby Road, which had been subdivided into small lots. Councillor Peter Meeking has information about the rotunda, put there by the estate developer. A band played there at weekends and holidays to attract prospective customers. Schreppel told us about “Uncle Jack” Doherty, owner of a concrete construction firm in the city, who liked to “go bush” occasionally. He was a strong, short, thickset man with a beard. He built the original “Bimbimbe” in O’Neil Road, known as “the concrete house”. It was burned in 1983, when its owner was radio entertainer, Betty Adamson. Doherty had a “Miner’s Right” near the road, on the crest of lots 114/115, now No 36 Hughendon Road. He sunk a shaft there, looking for the orebody origin of the alluvial gold found in the Haunted Gully. He was secretive and suspicious and scouted around in the bush to make sure that nobody was watching him at work. He would lower himself into the shaft, dig, and set fuses, hoist himself out. Then the boom of an explosion, and great shower of rocks and dust shot out of the shaft. His crusher was worked by an old American truck engine. Remains of these activities were there in our time. After a rain shower the crushed gravel glittered, but it was pyrites, “fools’ gold”. The property, lots 114/115, belonged to a Mrs Kerr, who used it to get firewood for her nursing home in St. Kilda. She occasionally had a holiday in her weatherboard house here. She did not mind Doherty, but she was upset when a syndicate of strangers took out a “Miner’s Right” in the 1960’s, and pegged a claim around the shaft. We had found old car number plates in it, and suspecting something illegal, we told the police. They already knew; they dumped them there. The syndicate cleared out the shaft, and extended it to 100 foot, and cut some side tunnels, so they told me. The weekends were punctuated by explosions, frequent ones. Mrs. Kerr, who was our neighbour, felt powerless to stop them. I suggested that she ask the Barnes family, who cut her firewood, to drop one or two truckloads of manure from their piggery into the shaft. I do not know if they did so, or perhaps the syndicate gave up, disappointed. Work stopped, and the shaft was filled when the McSkimmings built there. Though gold was recorded as found and worked in the Haunted Gully, south of Hughendon Road, there appears to have been none on the north side. In the Sailor’s and Welcome Gullies between Hughendon and Telegraph Roads there were several trenches and shafts, some going down to the original beds of the creeks. But no signs of actual workings, or records of them.15 |
Village Bell* | Jun 1994 | Along Hughendon Road, at Farr’s, No. 18, there was formerly Miss Linane’s cottage. It was seldom occupied. A cottage where No. 26 now stands, changed hands two or three times. For a long time it stood empty, frequented by petty criminals and draft dodgers, who left messages there for one another, and rude ones for the police. A Roman Catholic priest from a poor industrial parish in town took it as a holiday cottage, and gave it the name “Magnificat”. He was friendly with the demolition contractor, Whelan the Wrecker, who had a storage paddock at Dewhurst. He provided materials to improve the place. The work was done by lads from the parish, who enjoyed weekends in the country. A few repaid the priest's kindness by vandalism. When he was moved to Sydney, a young couple furnished it as a residence, with good furniture, a piano, etc. They moved to West Australia, leaving the place as it was. They did not return. Vandalised again.16 |
Village Bell | Dec 1995 | THANK YOU KIND, KIND PEOPLE Who is thanking you? I am the elderly man, known to many of you by sight, and many by name, whom you have seen in the village, using walking aids. First it was a walking stick. Then a metal stick with four spread-out feet. Now a walking frame. These aids have been needed, not because of two replaced hip joints, but because of a torn muscle in the right hip, resulting from some half-dozen falls. I want to thank all the people who are so kind and helpful to me. I find them everywhere in Upper Beaconsfield. They hold doors open for me, help me with parcels, steady me in dodgy places, and wait patiently for me to cross the road. Young people too: I took a package to the school, and the children came running to carry it. I feel humility and gratitude to be the recipient of so much kindness, courtesy and goodwill. I hope this expression of my gratitude, in the Village Bell, will reach many of you kind, helpful people. John Milligan17 |
Village Bell | Feb 1996 | Some Thoughts and Thanks to John and Terry Milligan John Milligan's very gracious letter of thanks in the last Village Bell, caused many of us to reflect on the extent of John and Terry's twenty years of service to the Upper Beaconsfield community. The following is an outline of their contributions and why they are held in such high regard. John and Terry arrived in Australia in 1953. John, a very experienced and able automotive engineer had come to join the management of Lucas Industries Aust. In 1958 they bought a 30 acre property in Hughenden Road intending to retire here. Deciding to farm the property, they worked hard sowing their five paddocks to pasture for fattening beef cattle. John admits he is no farmer, but thanks to help they received from local people, they were successful. When John retired from Lucas in 1974, he had a hip joint replacement. The following year they built their house and moved to Upper Beaconsfield where they were already involved in local activities, including the Historical Society. Local identity Beryl Hails, who was the Secretary of the Upper Beaconsfield Association persuaded the Milligans to become members. John was rather surprised to find himself elected President in 1976. Beryl and John decided to ask all village groups to participate in a community "Activities Day". A very successful meeting was held on 20th March 1976. This event later became the Village Fair. John was again President in 1977. Each year he was President, John wrote a "Newsletter to Members" which he delivered by hand, quite a task. Following his example and aiming to have local news in every household, the next President Roger Francey, initiated the production of the Village Bell on July 1st 1978. John became a major contributor, combining with Roy Harris and Diana Rocke to produce a well written and researched historical article in most of the early issues. These articles form the backbone of an Upper Beaconsfield history which will be written one day. Having displayed his talents, he was next invited to assist in the revision of the "Early Days of Berwick" 3rd Edition which was completed in 1979. He then accepted the big task of sifting and assembling information needed for "In the Wake of the Pack Tracks", which was published in 1982. The Centenary of both the Hall and the Primary School occurred in 1984. The Centenary Committee invited John to compile a history of both. This he did, with help from Terry and Nancy Boura. In 1992 he published "Ash Wednesday in Upper Beaconsfield", dedicated to Terry who died earlier that year. The following year he produced "The History of St. John's Anglican Church Upper Beaconsfield" an elegant volume, and then generously donated all copies free of charge to the Church. Terry, who died on 14th March 1992, was as able and probably even more energetic than John. Whatever she did was well done. We especially remember her for her work as Treasurer of the Fire Brigade and also the Fire Brigade Auxiliary from the time of her arrival in Upper Beaconsfield until her death, and also for her involvement with Red Cross. She was a great contributor, a strong happy and cheerful lady, who thought and spoke with great clarity. John and Terry were joint Citizens of the Year in 1980. John is still helping us. He is responsible for mailing copies of The Village Bell to "expatriates" who wish to receive it, and as a "Citizen" helps to care for the Memorial Gardens. Although he is physically limited - he still wields a "wicked rake" and cares for the occasional bonfire. Mary 'Terry' Milligan18 |

Village Bell* | Aug 1996 | VALE Evelyn VANCE. 1906-1996. Recently a long term resident of Upper Beaconsfield died at the age of 90 years. In 1956, the late Evelyn Vance and her husband Len arrived in the Village when they bought a third of an acre in Salisbury Road, opposite the Hall. The Vances built "Wirreanda", meaning "the place of tall trees". After 18 years, Len died and Ev continued on, caring for her home and garden which overlooked bush country out to Westernport Bay and beyond. Upper Beaconsfield held a special charm for Ev and she, having an abundance of vitality, energy and spirit, made lots of friends in the area. She was a happy person with a good sense of humour and a strong sense of community responsibility. Ev Vance enjoyed golf at the Montuna Golf Gub and was also a keen and competitive bowler at the Berwick Bowls Club. She was made a life member of the Berwick Library after devoting Tuesdays to that organisation for 25 years. In addition, she was an active in Legacy, the CWA and St. John's Church. Ev decided to stay put when the fires threatened Upper Beaconsfield township, guarding her beloved home and garden - and anyway, someone had to feed the firefighters! She nurtured every tree and flower in her steep landscaped garden and was generous with blooms and cuttings when visitors were taken "down below". Feeding kookaburras and other birds and caring for her little dog were also passions of hers. Ev Vance walked her dog to the Village daily and actively supported local traders. Like so many of us, Ev Vance knew and loved the township where she spent so many years.4 |
