  • 16 Aug 1899: Beaconsfield. On Friday evening last one of the most enjoyable social evenings ever held in the North Beaconsfield Hall took place in honor of the late assistant station-master, Mr. Henry Mohr, who has recently been transferred to Baddaginnie. The gathering was thoroughly representative of the district, fully a hundred persons being in attendance, testifying to the admiration and esteem in which this ideal public servant was held. Ex-Cr. Sykes occupied the chair, and in presenting Mr. Mohr with a handsomely framed and illuminated address and a purse of sovreigns, on behalf of the residents, stated that the gathering had taken place to honor one to whom honor was due. The many years Mr. Mohr had spent in their midst had proved him to be a capable and obliging officer, ever courteous and zealous in the discharge of his duties, his genial, happy disposition creating the most pleasant relationship between himself and the residents of this and surrounding districts, whether in his public or private character.
    Mr. William Keating, of Lower Beaconsfield, supported the remarks of the chairman, on added that, having known Mr. Mohr for ten years, he could say that as year after year passed his respect and admiration for him increased. Having had special intimacy and dealings with their guest, observing him on the bright and serious side of life for so many years, he could but say, claiming a fair knowledge of men, that it had never been his happy lot to meet one whose fidelity and integrity he had ever more reason to admire. This large district which he had so faithfully served joined hands with him in wishing Mr. Mohr a bright and prosperous future. Although suffering from a recent sad bereavement, he felt it his duty to be there that evening to add his testimony to that of other speakers in honor of their guest. He was sure none would think less of him, under the circumstances, for his being present.
    Mr. Geo W. Martin, representing Gembrook, added a few words in reference to Mr. Mohr's departure. Mr. Martin said that the deepest and truest feelings were often those most difficult to utter and which words failed to express and this was a true farewell. Mr. Mohr had striven to look up to that golden rule -"Do unto other as you would they should do to you," an consequently he had reaped the golden reward—not expressed in that handsome address or the material purse of sovereigns—but in the admiration and heartfelt wishes of which these were but the token. To the parting guest and friend he could only say farewell, and, if for ever, well then—fare them well. Mr. Eckersall of Lower Beaconsfield, and Mr. H. Glisman, of Upper Beaconsfield, endorsed what had been said by previous speakers, the latter gentleman also expressing the regret of the local cricket club in losing such a good and thorough sportsman.
    Mr. Mohr on rising to respond received an ovation, and it was a considerable time before he could be heard. He feelingly thanked thbse present, and also those who were absent though connected with the movement; for their great kindness in presenting him with so handsome a testimonial purse of sovreigns. He felt at a loss to express himself sufficiently grateful for such generous treatment towards him that evening. He could not understand what he had done to merit such kindness, as he had simply each day endeavored to do his duty. He would treasure their gift for all time as a me mento of happy associations spent in their midst. Refreshments were served during the evening, and dancing was kept up till the early hours of Saturday morning. Miss Hitchcock, of Dandenong, and Messrs. R. Bain and Eckersall contributed songs during the evening, and Mr. L G. Jones a recitation.
    The cricket club here are very sanguine of winning the trophies presented by the association. Our old friend Joe Doherty, of Nobelius fame, will be a starter, also Oscar Nobelius and Leslie Naylor, while they will be without the services of H. Mohr and D. Hedrick, who will be out of the district. It is to he hoped the members will turn up when called upon to play and not always be fine weather cricketers. The Recreation Club are having a very good time from a financial point of view. Arbour Day has been celebrated on no fewer than three occasions, when a great amount of clearing was done which will greatly benefit the local cricket club. On Saturday each member of the committee put their names down for an additional 10/6, with the hope of having the necessary improvements carried out. Mr H. E.   • 12 Oct 1881: An action for damages, before a jury of four, was heard at the Dandenong County Court on Saturday; arising; out of the arrest of Michael Holt by Senior Constable Gilfedder at Berwick, about three months ago.
    Holt was being arrested for insulting behaviour, and, daring the constable to a pugilistic encounter, Gilfedder used the handcuffs so freely that he battered Holts' head very considerably; eventually reducing him to a conditioin which he was able to push him down and hold him there. Whilst on the ground a second application of the handcuffs to the prisoner's head became necessary, the whole resulting in a pair of broken handcuffs and in Holt having to seek surgical aid and temporary retirement to bed, until the effects of the wounds and attendant erysipelas disappeared, under the treatment of Dr Moore.
    Gilfedder's defence was that no milder treatment would have enabled him to secure his prisoner, and that he, too, suffered from bruised hands and a nervous shock through the encounter. Holt was a man notorious for fighting, when under the influence of liquor, and, physically, he would not have been a match for him without a weapon. Mr. F. L. Smythe, for the plaintiff, and Dr Madden, for the defendant, addressed the jury at length, and His Honor summing up in justification of the violence used, the jury found a verdict for the defendant, with costs.12

    One of the cleverest and most original specimens of pen and ink sketches we have yet seen is one made by Mr. T. C. Camm, of Berwick. The sketch occupies the first page of a large sized scrap-book, and at first sight appears to be a number of miscellaneous printed documents thrown carelessly on the top of each other, and one would naturally attempt to straighten them up, but on closer examination nothing but the surface of the paper on which the sketch is made is to be found, showing it to be a most ingenious and well executed pen and ink sketch, in which the necessary colors are perfect copies of the original documents. There is a variety of these documents. At the top of the page on the left side appears part of the title page of Melbourne Punch and on the other side part of the first page showing the heading of the South Bourke and Mornington Journal, near which appears part of a £1 note, all perfect as the originals. The balance of the apparent pile of papers, of which part of each only is shown, shows an elector's right, a railway ticket, and a variety of other printed documents, which really makes the sketch a genuine work of art.20

    Mr. Camm has gone; "the proudest moment of his life" is past; a warm-hearted, grateful and appreciative public has testified its sense of his worth in the shape of a presentation piano, in the dulect strains of which it is hoped Mr. Camm will long continue to hear "How well we liked you." Because many persons in Berwick were unable to subscribe towards the testimonial it was not right to infer that they did not appreciate Mr. Camm's sterling qualities or regret his departure. Nor was it just to them or Mr. Camm to prevent them by their presence and applause to evince their good feelings and well wishes for his future, but as admission to the concert and presentation, was by post-card invitation you can well understand its invidious consequences.
    Fortunately the testimonial business is not at an end. The Rechabites are going to present one, and as but few Rechabites were invited to the so-called public one they will shortly have the opportunity of saying au revoir in the proper L.O.R. fashion.21

    There was not a spare parking spot in Brisbane Street as people turned out in their hundreds to watch one of Berwick’s most coveted homes sell at auction for a record $980,000. The sale made 70 Brisbane Street the most expensive house in the already booming suburb. Managing director of Barry Plant Doherty in Berwick, Paul Dabb, estimated more than 400 people turned up for the auction. There were five serious bidders - one over the phone from England and another from Brisbane. The property, Claremont, has 45 squares of living area and dates back to the late 1920s when it was built by Shire of Berwick engineer James Gardiner. It was bought by a Narre Warren East family, who were eagerly waiting to move in.
