Newspaper-Articles

  • 8 Nov 1902: One of the oldest residents of South Melbourne, Mr. George Gregory, marine engineer, died at his residence, Kelson Road, on Sunday last, at the advanced age of 81 years. Mr. Gregory arrived in Melbourne from Gloucestershire in the year 1851, in the "Chusan," taking up his abode in "Canvas Town." He was for many years engineer in the late Tasmanian Steam Navigation Co. on the steamers ''The Clarence," "Havilah," "Royal Shepherd," "Southern Cross" and "Tamar," most of which have long since ended their careers. Mr. Gregory, in his connection with the early shipping, was able to give some interesting narratives of the attempted escapes of the convicts from Port Arthur, Tasmania, and many of his friends have listened to the exciting incidents of these times with great interest. He leaves a wife and seven children, viz., Mrs. Frank Davenport, Mrs. A. G. Gray (resident of Cape Town, but now on a visit to Melbourne), Mrs. Alfred Myers and Messrs. J. G., M. W., H. J. and C. Dickson Gregory. The funeral took place on Monday last and was attended by a large number of friends of the deceased and his family.7

  • 17 Jan 1925: BOY INJURED ON ST. KILDA RD. Wilfred Langley, 17, of Nell street, Toorak, was riding a bicycle on St. Kilda road today, when it is alleged, he was knocked over by a motor car driven by Mr John Bailey, of Chelsea.
He was taken to the Alfred Hospital by Mr Bailey and admitted with a dislocated knee-joint.12

  • 28 Jan 1952: Police Find Sale Boy's Body in 20 Feet of Water. Clothes in Dressing Shed leads to search at Bairnsdale.
Friday morning was warm and sultry. There was a considerable number of children swimming in the Mitchell river just below the township, the usual swimming pool in the river. Wilfred Paul Langley, of 27 Reeve street, Sale, was among the swimmers. That evening after the children and adults had left, the clothing belonging to this lad was discovered in the dressing shed. The police made a search and then with grappling irons commenced to drag the river in the vicinity of the pool.
Assisted by two residents of Bairnsdale, Senior Constable Peppler and Constable M. Nicholls found the body on Saturday evening in 20 feet of water.
    STAYING IN BAIRNSDALE
It is understood that the boy, who was aged 15 years and weighing about 14 stone, was staying with his father, Mr. W. M. Langley, at a Bairnsdale guest house. His father was formerly a baker conducting a business in Raymond street.
When the lad did not return to the residential, it was thought that he may have run away to Sale. The matter was reported. When the clothes were discovered, it was realised that the lad must have encountered difficulties whilst swimming. Investigations were made and inquiries revealed that he was seen at the pool at 11.30 a.m. on Friday. He was swimming in the river outside the enclosed pool.
    DID NOT SEE ANYTHING
The children who were questioned stated that they did not see anyone in difficulties in the river.
After a search downstream, the police then commenced dragging operations. They worked throughout Saturday and that evening about 7.30 o'clock, the body was recovered in 20 feet of water close to the swimming pool.
An inquest was formally opened before Mr. J. Fleischer and adjourned to a date to be fixed. A post mortem examination was ordered.
Deen sympathy has been extended to Mr. and Mrs. Langley on their sad loss. Margaret Ellen Langley14

  • 1 Aug 1945: VICTORIAN NUDISTS TO HAVE MORE ELBOW-ROOM
MELBOURNE, Tuesday. — Victorian nudists are planning extensive additions to the area of their colonies in the Dandenong Ranges to cope with increased membership.
Secretary of the Victorian Health and Sun Bathing League (Mr. C. Harry) said that the nudists grounds would accommodate several hundred when extensions had been made.
Mr. Harry said many interstate and overseas nudists serving in the forces had taken advantage of the Dandenong Ranges colony "to spend, a few hours in the sun with us."
'Because of the sheltered position of our property in the Dandenong Ranges they can sunbathe at any time of the year, no matter how cold the weather, if the sun is shining', he said.
Rules of the club provided that no intoxicants should be allowed on the premises, and that "Ladies and gentlemen must at all times conduct themselves as such."
Secretary of the Ferntree Gully Shire Council, which controls the, Dandenong Ranges area, said existence of the nudist colony was not generally known in the Dandenong and Ferntree Gully areas.
The nudists have kept the location of the colony a close secret from outsiders. Members are known to each other only by their first names.7

  • 24 Aug 1951: 'Poultryman' but he had no fowls
A witness who told the Egg Inquiry Committee today that he was a poultry farmer admitted that he had not owned any fowls since the 1920's.
But, he said, his wife had 39 birds, one less than the minimum which required registration with the Board. Harry Edward Cope, of Ringwood, was the witness and he said he made a living as a merchant by buying and selling eggs. He had been careful ever since the Board was formed to see that his wife had one fowl less than the minimum.
Board Inspectors had visited his home several times to inspect his flock. "They make me line up the fowls while they count them," he said.
"I know everything there is to know about the poultry industry, from the hen to the table. I'm the man who started Australia's egg exports to England. I should be on the Board."
    "Bad eggs"
He claimed that the board often sold him bad eggs from its Box Hill floor. The eggs were far below the quality of those he bought privately from producer-agents.
The Chairman (Mr Galvin): Will you give us the names of the men from whom you buy eggs and the grocers to whom you sell them?
    Mr Cope: No, I won't.
The inspectors would be on their tails if I did that.
Mr Galvin: You've made statements very damaging to the board. Every other witness has said the quality of board eggs has improved in the last few months.
The board may have its faults, but this committee won't permit any person to defame it while refusing to give information that would substantiate his criticism.
    "Evasions"
Mr Galvin said other evidence suggested that producer-agents were evading Board pool deductions by selling through merchants. These merchants were alleged to have bought some Board eggs, and when complaints were made about quality they always said the bad eggs were Board eggs.
Next week the committee will visit several board and agents' floors.11

  • 31 Oct 1950: Nudist secret meeting place sold at weekend
FOR many years Victorians wondered where the State's nudists held their camp meetings.
The secret was out on Saturday, when the property where one group of Victorian nudists held their meetings was sold - 19 acres 3 roods and 31 perches - at Beaconsfield.
It was sold with maypole and all.
The sale was held under the order of the Supreme Court of Victoria, and according to the auctioneers, John M. Morgan, of Melbourne, it followed a disagreement among the nudists themselves.
The property carried four huts, a community kitchen, a log cabin, ball tennis-court, swing, and, of course, the maypole. The property is very well timbered, and ably protected from the curious eye. Leopold Anthony Clark-Hunt, Joyce May Clark-Hunt, Harold Edward Thomson Harry Edward Cope5
  • 31 Mar 1960: Many bushfires flare as dry season climax
About four square miles of scrub was burned out at Upper Beaconsfield yesterday. At one stage it was feared that the blaze might reach Beaconsfield township.
The fire was brought under control early last night. Three shacks owned by a sunbathing colony were destroyed. Leopold Anthony Clark-Hunt, Joyce May Clark-Hunt, Harold Edward Thomson Harry Edward Cope6
