  • 7 Mar 1877: On Friday evening last, a tea meeting and concert was given in aid of the building fund in the State school, and was a great success, from a financial point of view, the necessary eatables and drinkables at the tea meeting having been liberally provided by Mrs. Lunt, Mrs. Souter, Mrs Searle, Mrs Startup, Miss Brock, Mrs. Officer, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Curtois and Mrs. Elmes; and, although there was an endless number of relays, it is due to them, to say there was plenty for all comers, and every thing passed off very happily.
The tea meeting was followed, by a concert, at which Mr. G. W Robinson officiated as Chairman. The performers were mostly local; the exceptions being temporary residents, with Miss Evans, a visitor from Melbourne, who is an excellent pianist. The lady performers were Mrs. Curtois, Misses Evans, McDowall. Lunt, Brock; the gentlemen being Messrs Henderson, Parsons, and Beckett. Nash and Master Champion. Mr Camm's name appeared on the programe but he was indisposed.3
  • 12 Apr 1877: BERWICK.—The rising township of Berwick has hitherto been without any building belonging to the Church of England. Recently the railway works and the selection of land has added temporarily some energetic men, and it was thought by the prominent residents that the proper time to take action had arrived, and steps were taken to set about the good work ; the result is that a neat little church has been erected. The land for the purpose was granted several years since, about an acre, fronting Palmerston and Peel streets—a beautiful and commanding situation. The work is now completed at a cost of £400, which includes seats and all the necessary furniture. Mr. Lunt, C.E., made the plan of the building and officiated as honorary architect ; whilst Messrs. H. Searle, G. Miller, Curtois, and others have been most energetic in their efforts. On Friday evening, 2nd March, a tea-meeting and concert was given in aid of the building fund in the State-school, the tables being liberally provided by Mrs. Lunt, Mrs. Souter, Mrs. Searle, Mrs. Startup, Miss Brock, Mrs. Officer, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Curtois, and Mrs. Elmes. The tea-meeting was followed by a concert, at which Mr. G. W. Robinson officiated as chairman. The performers were mostly local, the exceptions being temporary residents, with Miss Evans, a visitor from Melbourne, who is an excellent pianist. The lady performers were Mrs. Curtois, Misses Evans, M'Dowall, Lunt, Brock ; the gentlemen being Messrs. Henderson, Parsons, A'Beckett, Nash, and Master Champion.
Mr. Camm's name appeared on the programme, but he was indisposed. Mr. Trounson gave a Shakesperian recitation. Over £30 was realised by the evening. On Friday, 9th March, the Bishop of Melbourne and Mrs. Moorhouse arrived en route from Gippsland.
They were met by Dr. Elmes, Messrs. Curtois and Miller, and other officers of the church, together with the Rev. Dr. Bromby, Rev. P. J. Smith and Canon Becher, who had come out from Melbourne for the opening of the new church. The clerical party were hospitably entertained at luncheon by the church committee. At three o'clock divine service was commenced in the church, which was densely crowded, the Rev. P. J. Smith reading prayers. The first lesson was read by Canon Becher, the second lesson by Dr. Bromby. After an able sermon from the Bishop, the offertory was taken up, which amounted to about £15. After service the Bishop and Mrs. Moorhouse proceeded to Melbourne. The following Sunday divine service was conducted by the Rev. P. J. Smith with large congregations, the collections amounting to £5, making the collections at the opening services over £20. Too much praise cannot be given, to those energetic men by whose exertions the church has been erected.4
  • 4 Jul 1877: DANDENONG. (From a Correspondent.)
The Presbyterian congregation, now a year established, purchased a superior, cabinet organ (Smith & Co., American) some time ago, and by an effort on the part of the present congregation, assisted in the first place by a friend who paid cash for the instrument, and took the purchase money as convenient, the debt thereon at the end of last quarter was about £12. The Committee resolved to clear off this small debt and begin the next year free as far as it was concerned, and a sacred concert for that object was successfully carried out on Monday evening in the Mechanics Institute. The choir of the congregation was greatly assisted by outside friends—in an especial manner by the Keysborough choir, under their able conductor, Mr. Foster. There are some very excellent voices in this choir, which, were it not invidious, I would, with very great pleasure, personally publicly acknowledge. Mr. Nash, from Gembrook, who, I am assured, is forward in every good work, and Miss Brock, from Berwick, contributed several select pieces which were highly appreciated. They were finished performances. Mr. A. Thompson, of Cranbourne, accompanied by Mrs. McKenzie, sang A Litttle Cloud and The Soldier's Friend with genuine pathos and exactness. Miss Swords in Listening Angels and Pilgrims of the Night, Mr. Cartwright in Through Waves to the Shore, Mr. C. Dobson in Only an Armour Bearer, and Mr. McPherson in Peace be Still, on the part of the Dandenong choir, accompanied so admirably by that true and genial friend of harmony, Mrs. Dobson, at great inconvenience to herself, as she had a severe cold, acquitted themselves well, in some instances—especially in choral singing—to the astonishment of the sceptical, whose constant cry is, 'can any good, &c,' and to the delight of their not hypercritical friends. Miss Maggie Keys in Ruth; Mr. McDonald, in Say is your Lamp burning, my Brother; Miss Kattie Keys, in Forsake me Not and Tired; Miss Rebecca Keys, in 'Tis thus decreed; Miss Maria Keys, in Hope; Miss Lizzie Keys, in Pilgrim Fathers; Miss E. J. Keys, in Absalom; and Miss Keys, in Let the Angels in, evidenced a very careful training and such purity of tune as could only be the result of earnest care and great practice. Miss Brock sang with great feeling and true expression, "O, Rest in the Lord ;" and Mr Nash showed great precision, delicacy of expression, and expert manipulation on the organ, in his reading of both a prelude and an interlude from Mendelssohn and Batiste. On the whole, a very enjoyable evening was spent by a large audience, both intelligent and orderly—as usual in Dandenong—and the Sacred Concert was a pecuniary and an intellectual success. These reunions generate reciprocal feelings of such a kindly nature as to cause a general desire that they be more frequent in the future than they have been in the past.5
  • 27 Feb 1878: The morning services of the Clyde Wesleyan Church were celebrated by two sermons being preached on Sunday last by the Rev D. S. Lindsay. On Monday tea and luncheon were held in the schoolroom adjoining;— the tables were generously supplied by Mrs Month, Mrs. Hardy, Mrs. F. H. Searle, jun., and Miss Cadd. Alexander Patterson, Esq., J.P., presided at the meeting held afterwards and delivered a very suitable address. The other speakers were the Rev. Mr. Lindsay Gason, W. L. Patterson, of Hasting, M. Pollock, of Gembrook, and Mr. F.H. Searle, sen. There was a large attendance, composed of people of all denominations from all round Cranbourne, Berwick, Dandenong, and in fact, the surrounding country. Mrs. Dobson presided at the harmonium and did some excellent service. Miss Brock, of Berwick, sang "For Evermore" to the delight of the audience. The proceeds amounted to about £15, which will be devoted to the trust funds. The affair was very successful.6
  • 16 Jan 1884: CHRIST CHURCH BAZAAR
This grand bazaar in aid of the building fund of Christ Church Berwick, was held in the State School Berwick on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday last, and resulted in a sum of not less than £120 being taken, an amount which will materially lessen, if not entirely liquify, the existing debt on the church.
Preparations were commenced during the afternoon of Tuesday, when Mr. Foss? assisted by a bevy of young ladies, worked with a will, so that by seven o'clock the room was most tastefully decorated with ferns, evergreens, &c., and the positions of the stalls allotted.
Early on Wednesday the sounds of saws, hammers, &c. was heard in the building, and the curious passer by who took a look in at the window, saw Messrs Kent, Elmes, Vieusseux, and Fritzlaff hard at work fixing the stalls and decorating them. By eleven o'clock all was ready, save a few finishing touches which were added by the several ladies who had so kindly taken the onerous task of "having a stall," and then all was ready. By two o'clock a few visitors put in an appearance, and the Bazaar was formally opened by the Rev. Mr. Hill, who, in a few well chosen remarks, stated the object of the bazaar, and declared it duly open. The business then commenced in earnest.
The stalls were apportioned as follows: No. 1, Mesdames Kent and Searle, assisted by Misses Searle, Patterson, and Lengon. No. 2, Mrs. Elmes, assisted by Misses Brock, Elmes, and E. A'Beckett. No. 3, Mesdames Brunt and Vieusseux, assisted by Mrs. and Miss A'Beckett, and the Misses Brunt, Ashley, and Rae; Refreshment stall, Misses Elmes and Vaile. To in any way particularise as to the merits of the stalls would be an invidious task, but the palm must be awarded to Mesdames Kent and Searle, who had the best and most handsomely stocked stall; they were closely followed by Mrs. Elmes, while Mesdames Brunt and Vieusseux stocked their shop with bes? articles. All tlhe stalls however did good business, the voices of several of our sedate churchwarden being heard above the noisy throng, announcing the merits of this or that article, or declaring it to be the "the very last ticket," "roll up! roll up!" However, all worked with a will, having in view the one object, namely, to get as much money as possible. Special mention must be made of the Refreshment stall, principally stocked by the kind donations of Capt Vaile, Mrs. R. Virgoe, and Mrs. Bain, and presided over by two ladies, Misses, Elmes and Naill; who not only supplied good and substantial refreshments, fruit, ices. &c. for several and small coins of the read.., but also sweet smiles for what they were worth; and so busines went on from day to day, until Saturday evening saw the stalls nearly empty and the stall holders pretty well tired out, and a good substantial sum of money, about £120, to the credit of the church. There was a concert on each evening, several ladies and gentlemen discoursing sweet music, which was attentively listened to by the large and enthusiastic audience present. Special mention of any particular performers could not be made, but we feel certain the thanks of all interested, are due to those ladies and gentleman who have so kindly assisted. Of the general public... opinion is that they parted with their money in a very handsome way, and them is due the great success of the bazaar.7
  • 1 Jul 1903: A Mr. Brock mentioned:
Berwick. The Mechanics' Institute at the above place was well filled last Friday evening at the "At Home" arranged by the Rev. H. J. Harvey, incumbent of Church of England, Berwick. The first part of the evening's entertainment was commcnced with a very effective piano solo by Miss Ivy Chalk; and pleasing songs were rendered by Misses Danby and Postle and Mr. Brock. The glees by the Misses Postles and Hornby were much appreciated, also the recitations by Miss Freda Skinner. Most interest was entered upon the second part of the programme—the presentation of a gold watch to Miss Searle, organist of Christ Church. Mr. Harvey in a glowing speech referred to the number of years (over 12) that the lady had played the organ, and the services she had given gratuitiously at entertainments apart from the church.
With a few more well chosen words she presented the token to Miss Searle, whose face expressed what she would like to say. Mr. Fuller kindly sprang into the breach, and in a concise speech, its chief characteristic being its brevity, conveyed the recipient's thanks to the donors amidst applause. After dispensing with the third part of the evening, the refreshments, and singing part of that beautiful hymn "Abide with me," the audience dispersed.
Next Friday afternoon a farewell social will be given in the hall, when presentations will be made to Mr. and Miss Harvey.8
  • 26 Jan 1911: MR. H. WALSTAB AND MISS YVONNE SCOTT.
An exceedingly pretty wedding took place at the Church of England, Berwick, on Saturday, January 21, when Miss Yvonne Scott was married to Mr. Harry Walstab. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Mr. Kivenson. The bride (who was given away by Captain Watson of Williamstown) wore a lovely frock of white silk, prettily draped with Brussels lace, and the usual wreath and veil. Miss Atalie Scott (sister of the bride) was her attendant, and also wore white, with an amethyst necklet (gift of the bridegroom). Mr. Penry Boyd supported the bridegroom as best man.
At the conclusion of the ceremony the guests (numbering 50) had a delightful drive in perfect weather to "Athalie," Harkaway, the residence of the bride's sister, where a reception was held and wedding-tea served, after which the happy pair left for their honeymoon amidst a shower of confetti. The going-away dress was a tussore silk coat and skirt and cornflower blue hat. Many beautiful presents were received. Those noticed at the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. W. a'Beckett, Mr. and Mrs. W. Harper, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, Mr. and Mrs. Thomson, Mrs. and Miss Mackie, Miss Drew, Miss Brock, Mrs. and Miss Ramsden. Harry Walstab, Yvonne Frances Scott9
  • 2 Feb 1911: MR. H. WALSTAB TO MISS Y. F. SCOTT.
On Saturday afternoon Miss Yvonne Frances Scott, daughter of the late Mr. John Scott, of Harkaway, and Mr. Harry Walstab, second son of the late Councillor Arthur Walstab, of Brighton, and Mrs. Walstab, now of Murrumbeena, were married at Christ Church, Berwick, by the Rev. E. C. Thomson, of Cranbourne, brother-in-law of the bridegroom. The church was prettily decorated with white roses and other choice white flowers. The bride was given away by her mother's cousin, Captain Watson. She wore a simple but effective gown of white satin charmeuse, the tunic trimmed with lace and silver, tulle veil, wreath of orange blossom. Her bouquet was in the form of a horseshoe in white satin and flowers. The bridesmaid was Miss Athalie Scott (sister of the bride). She wore a gown of soft white silk : large white hat, trimmed with very pale blue, and lined with black lace: also a gold chain and amethyst pendant, the gift of the bridegroom. The best man was Mr. Penleigh Boyd.
After the ceremony the bridal party and guests left for "Athalie," Harkaway, where the wedding reception and tea was held. The house was prettily decorated with fern and white flowers. The bride and bridegroom received under a weddingbell.
The travelling costume was a coat and skirt of Shantune silk, and cornflower blue hat. Mr. and Mrs. H. Walstab left for the Gippsland Lakes, where the honeymoon is to be spent. There were about fifty quests present, only relations and intimate friends being invited. Amongst these were noticed—Mrs. Arthur Walstab, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Walstab, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. a'Beckett, Mr. and Mrs. William Harper, Rev. E. C. and Mrs. Thomson, the Misses Brock, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Warrington Rogers, Rev. A. J. and Mrs. Cole, Mr. and Mrs. Brittingham, Mr. Stuart Nelson, Miss Searle, Mrs. and Miss Mackie, Mr. Merric Boyd, Miss Boyd, Miss Drew, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton, and Mrs. and Miss Ramsdon. HOME, ORCHARD & FARM at BERWICK: from 1866 - Hermann developed a cherry orchard on Ten (10) acres of land next to where the Berwick cemetery is located. This was Allotment Six (6) of the Parish of Berwick, County of Mornington, on the corner of Lyall and Inglis Streets, Berwick. The east side adjoins the Berwick Cemetery. 'Hermann Jaeckel' bought the land for £45 on the 12 Jan 1866 at 5 minutes to Noon ahead of a rival maybe? The time was deemed important then. He bought the land from William Cooper Dalton, who had owned it since ? when he bought it from Robert BAIN, whose name appears for that Allotment on the published Parish Plan of Berwick. Hermann also signed his name on the parchments as 'Herman Jaeckel.' Robert Bain is one of the attesting signatories supporting Hermann Jaeckel's 1862 Berwick Naturalization.

  • 19 Mar 1923: BRIGHTON'S GRAND OLD MAN. Death of Councillor Wilson.
By the death of Councillor Thomas Wilson, which occurred at his residence Florencecourt, William street, Brighton, yesterday, the city of Brighton lost a picturesque and interesting personality. Councillor Wilson was born in Ulster in 1838, and arrived in Victoria with his parents when aged six years, and settled at Brighton. Since that time the family name has been associated with that municipality. William Street, in which Councillor Wilson lived, was named after his father, Mr. William Wilson, and the Wilson Recreation Hall also represents an association with the family. When he entered the Brighton borough council in 1865, Councillor Wilson was the youngest municipal councillor, and he also had the distinction of being the youngest major in Victoria when he was elected to that position in 1869. Councillor Wilson was identified with the Adam Lindsay Gordon pilgrimage from its revival in 1912, and had vivid recollections of the poet's residence
at Brighton. Except for a short period, during which he toured the world, Councillor Wilson had since 1865 been a member of the Brighton council, and seven times filled the mayoral chair, the last occasion being during the visit of the Prince of Wales.
At the time of his death Councillor Wilson represented the council on the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works, of which he had been a member for 22 years. Other positions he held were president of the Brighton Technical School, chairman of the Elsternwick Park
committee of management, president of the Hospital League of Mercy, returning officer of the South Eastern Province and of the electoral district of Brighton, president of the Brighton district brass band, vice president of the Brighton Croquet Club, and trustee of St Cuthbert's Presbyterian Church. Councillor Wilson, whose wife predeceased him 18 months ago, leaves one son, Mr A. C. Wilson, who served in the Boer War and in the Great War as a captain. His oldest son, Captain T. W. Wilson died 12 years ago.
The funeral will leave for the Brighton Cemetery at 3 o'clock this afternoon.11
