  • 25 Apr 1888: A PRESENTATION AT BERWICK.
On the evening of the 3rd inst. the members of the Church of Christ Berwick, met to bid farewell to Mr. James Funston and his family, who for many years have been prominently connected with that church. The meeting had the form of a coffee soiree, Mr. H Hillbrick presiding, having the guest of the evening on his right hand.....reported by Mr. E. Hillbrick. Several speeches were delivered in which the history of Mr. Funston's connection with the church—extending over eighteen years—was referred to in very favorable terms.—Mr. Macallister, in the course of his speech, referred to an address expressive of the good feeling existing between Mr. Funston and the church genenerally, and also of the latter's appreciation of the valuable services rendered by Mr. Funston.—The "Address" which was about three feet long by about two feet six inches wide, is very elaborately got up and finished in a finest artisitic style. On the lefthand side-in hand painting is a large bunch of flowers, consisting of roses, azaleas and Marguarite with a nice bunch of forget-me-nots filling the remaining vacuuum. The wording is standing up two columns of gold tinsel and four inches of the top is tesselated work, finished in most artistic manner. On the bottom directly under the columns, is a beautiful landscape view of the Cardinia creek, with a view of the Beaconsfield ranges in the distance. The creek is draped with weeping willow, with a large stream of water flowing beneath, the lanscape view is emblematical of the future of Beaconsfield.—Mr. Funston, after having received the address, thanked the church members for their kind regards and tendered some kindly advice for the future. He impressed upon them the necessity of taking the Bible as the all sufficient rule both for individual life and moral conduct. He said that he would treasure the address as a souvenier of the many happy and useful years he had spent in Beaconsfield.
    Here follows the address -
    To Mr. James Funston.
DearBrother—It is scarcely necessary to tell you that the news of your departure, with your family from our midst was received with the deepest regret. We cannot let you depart without expressing our appreciation of yourself, both as a citizen and a Disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ. Aa a citizen you are evidently held in the highest esteem, and as a Christian your life and conduct has been such that all must acknowledge you have been with Jesus and learnt of him. The service you have rendered the cause of your dear Master, in this district, we can say with pleasure that for the eighteen years you have been connected with the church your desire has been for its good and welfare.
To-day the church at Berwick has to acknowledge and feel thankful to you for your oft repeated Council and advice. We wish you God speed and our prayer is that our Heavenly Father may go with you and bless you and yours in all your undertakings. Signed on behalf of the church at Berwick.
