Education*2008 Scotch College. Jack Louis CADBY (’27) was born at St Kilda on 18 May 1912, the son of a farmer, as Louis Lawrence Cadby, but was known throughout his life as Jack Louis Cadby. He attended Scotch from 31 May 1927 to December 1927. From 1939–40 he was a gunner in the AIF, and he became a lieutenant after further service from 1944–47. Also at Scotch were Jack’s brothers Alan (SC 1928–31; died 30 October 1990) and Lawrence (SC 1930–35; died 16 October 2008: see obituary below). Jack lived at Bentley, Western Australia, and Scotch has recently learned he died on 19 December 2003.8

The deceased, who was a well known diamond merchant and jeweller, of Little Collins-street, Melbourne, was over 71 years of age, and came to Australia about 60 years ago from Birmingham, where members of his family still reside. He had extensive property interests in the heart of Melbourne, in the suburbs and provinces, and was well known in Launceston and Hobart.
    Mrs. Cadby (nee Miss Winifred Hogan, of Hobart) was travelling with her husband at the time of his death.11
  • 10 Dec 1928: THE ASCANIUS ARRIVES.
    Fine weather and calm seas were features of the voyage of the Blue Funnel passenger liner Ascanius, which arrived from the United Kingdom yesterday morning. Two deaths at sea were reported, both of them being elderly passengers. Several days out from Las Palmas Dr Phillipson, a retired medical practitioner, bound for South Africa, passed away, while Mr. Louis Cadby, the well-known Melbourne jeweller, died two days before reaching Cape Leeuwin. Both were buried at sea.12

    Personal property valued at,£87, 222 and real estate valued at £12,927, has been left by Mr Louis Cadby, 5 Wynnstay road, Armadale, who carried on a jewellery business in Little Collins street. He had retired some years before his death at sea on November 5, 1928, when he was returning from a trip abroad.
    Tho Perpetual Executors and Trustees Association is applying for probate of the will, which, subject to the creation of several trusts and the payment, of legacies, bequeaths everything to his children.13

Education* Scotch College. Lawrence CADBY (’39) was born at St Kilda on 31 May 1922, the third son of Clarice and Lawrence Cadby, and attended Scotch from 1930–35, albeit being away during 1933. He was proud to the end of his days to have been a Scotch boy. His brothers (see above) were also at Scotch. He was a member of the Junior School football teams of 1934 and 1935, leaving to work on the family hobby farm at Berwick aged almost 14. He later became a carpenter. Lawrence served in World War II as a sapper from 1943–44, seeing active service off Townsville, where, as a despatch rider, he recalled being chased by a Japanese aeroplane.
He married Dorothy and had three daughters: Clair, Kay and Lynne (died 1983). Lawrence retired to a hobby farm at Meeniyan, Victoria, later moving to Leongatha. His last year was spent at Domain Seahaven at Inverloch. He died at Domain Seahaven on 16 October 2008, survived by his younger sister Mary, two daughters, grandchildren Ernestina, Barry, Nicholas, Timothy and Katelyn, and great grandchildren Braydon and Jett. There was a tribute to him by the RSL at his funeral at the Handley Funeral Services Chapel at Leongatha on Saturday 25 October 2008. Lawrence was interred in the Meeniyan Cemetery. His eldest daughter Clair provided information for this obituary.1
