    A wide circle of friends will hear with regret of the death of Mrs. Grice, widow of the late Mr. Richard Grice (of Messrs. Grice, Sumner and Co.), which took place on Friday last, at the age of 83 years. The late Mrs. Grice was born at "Bowden," Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire, on 30th August, 1822. She came to Australia in 1844 with her father and mother, the late Mr. and Mrs. Hibberson, and was married at St. James's Church, Sydney, on 21st August, 1844, to Mr. Richard Grice, of Melbourne, who arrived in Melbourne in 1839. Mr. Grice is remembered through out Victoria for his many and generous charitable actions, his name being on almost every charitable list in Melbourne.
    He was the greatest supporter of the Church of England in Victoria, and always the largest subscriber to the Bishop of Melbourne's Fund, his subscriptions never being less than £500 per annum regularly. At one time he regularly subscribed £1000 per annum, but finding in one year that the total donations from all other sources, including his £1000,came, to only £1350, he reduced his subscription to £500 per annum, in order, as he said, to induce the friends of the fund to take more interest in it. The fund has since been fairly liberally supported. Mrs. Grice kept up all her late husband's subscriptions to the charities, and in addition the Bishop of Melbourne's Fund has always received a cheque annually from her for £500. In her private charities no one knew what she dispensed, except that the amount was very large. Mrs. Grice many years ago endowed one of the cottages at the Old Colonists' Homes. Both the late Mr. and Mrs. Grice had a great objection to official notice being taken of their donations to any fund. The deceased lady enjoyed good health until about last February, when she was taken ill at her residence, Mornington, and had never been really well since. A few months ago she was seized with a slight stroke of paralysis. About three weeks ago she was taken worse, and her death occurred at Victoria-parade on Friday, at 11.40 a.m., when she passed away quietly and painlessly in her sleep.
    Mrs. Grice had had a family of twelve, six of whom survive her, viz., Messrs. James, John and Richard Grice, Mrs. J. A. Levey, Mrs. Sturges, who resides in England (the wife of Mr. Sturges, well known as A.D.C. to the late Lord Loch when Governor here) and Mrs. Elwel, who lives in England. The late Mrs. Grice visited England with her husband in 1846, and had since his death paid several visits to the old country.
    The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon at the Melbourne General Cemetery, the Rev. Mr. White, of Trinity Church, East Melbourne (for many years vicar at Mornington), officiating. A very quiet, plain hearse and coffin of oak were provided, and there were no mourning coaches, the deceased lady always having very strong objections to pomp and show at what she considered ought, to be religious ceremonies. The following were the pall bearers: — Mr. D. R. M'Gregor (vice-president of the Old Colonists' Association). Captain Logan, Mr. Justice Hodges, Mr. Albert Miller, Mr. J.L. Purves, Mr. Henry Henty, Mr. John Catto and the Rev. C. P. M. Bardin.3

  • 3 Apr 1919: OBITUARY. THE LATE WILLIAM PEARSON.
    The news of the passing away, rather suddenly, of Mr. William Pearson, at his residence, Kilmany Park, on Monday morning last, occasioned widespread regret throughout the district. Early in the morning Mr. Pearson was about his home as usual, but his heart suddenly failed him, and he passed peacefully away before the arrival of Drs. Macdonald, Hagenauer, and Campbell. The deceased gentleman was the third son of the late Hon. William Pearson, one of the early and highly esteemed pioneers of Gippsland, and the Kilmany Park property has been in the family's possession for three score and a half years. Mr. Pearson was at one time the owner of Bonegilla Station, near Wodonga, which he sold on succeeding to the Kilmany Park Estate. He was keenly interested in sport generally, and at times had a horse in training. At one time he was President of the Sale Turf Club. At the time of the visit of His Majesty the King to Victoria, close on 20 years ago, Kilmany Park was placed at His Majesty's disposal as a shooting box, and on the occasion of his visit there His Majesty was entertained at afternoon tea by Mr. and Mrs. Pearson.
    Mr. Pearson's death was not altogether unexpected, as he had been in indifferent health for some time. He had only lately returned from England, where he had been to see his only son, Roy, who is still on active service with the British army in France. Besides the soldier son, the widow and two daughters survive Mr. Pearson. One of the daughters is the widow of the late Captain Jackson, who was killed in action. His surviving brothers are Messrs. John and Alex. Pearson, of Berwick and Glenroy, respectively. The deceased gentleman took an active part in the public life of Sale. For some time he was a member of the Sale Borough and Rosedale Shire Councils. He was also an ex-President of the North Gippsland Agricultural Society, with which body he was associated for a considerable number of years. Deceased represented the Gippsland Province in the Legislative Council from 1896 to 1916, being succeeded by the Hon. G. M. Davis. His father represented the same province from 1881 to 1893. He was 54 years of age.
    By Mr. Pearson's death the Diocese of Gippsland is deprived of one of its pillars. He has been a member of the Trusts Corporation since its inception, and for many years was chairman of committees of the Synod. In public, as in private life, he was a concientious and honourable man, and was of a retiring disposition.
    The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Tuesday afternoon, the interment taking place in the Sale Cemetery. The chief mourners were deceased's brothers Messrs. J. and A. Pearson, and his brothers in-law, Messrs. Gooch Bros. The Sale Borough Council was represented by the Mayor, councillors, and the town clerk, and the Council of the Diocese of Gippsland by the chancellor, Mr. P. P. Sergeant; advocate, Mr. William Bruce; registrar, Mr. C. W. Bell, and Messrs. L. C. Treloar, E. R. M'Quie, and A. L. Johnson. The Cathedral Chapter was represented by Messrs. R. J. Cherry, G. Walker, R. Williams, and E. Phipps, senr. The burial service was conducted by the Bishop of Gippsland, assisted by the Rev. R.. G. Nichol, warden of the Divinity Hostel. In an impressive address his Lordship referred in eloquent terms to the life of the deceased, and various traits in his character.
    The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. L. Jensen & Co.9

    At Portarlington on 16th May Miss Alma H. A. Calhoun, eldest daughter of Mr. John Calhoun, was married to Mr. Fred. W. Trethowan, of Berwick, formerly of Drysdale, at the Presbyterian Church. The fact that this was the first wedding to be celebrated in the church attracted much attention. The interior of the church had been most artistically decorated with white flowers and ivy leaves. On the reading desk appeared the initials of the bride and bride groom, "A.C." and F.W.T." In the aisle was erected an arch, from which was suspended a monster white wedding bell, while an artistic rustic floral gate was fitted in below. The chandeliers and walls were festooned white and colored flowers, all blending harmoniously. The bride, escorted by her father, entered the church to the accompaniment of Lohengrien's Bridal March, played by Miss Davis, church organist. The bride wore ivory duchesse satin, with train trimmed with frills, the bodice being composed of small tucks and ruches of chiffon, with transparent yoke, and sleeves of mousscline de soie. She wore the usual wreath and veil, and carried a beautiful wbite shower bouquet. The bridegroom's gift to bis bride was a gold crestent set with pearls. The bridesmaids were Miss Maggie Young (cousin of the bride), Miss Trethowan (sister of the bridegroom), and Misses Hilda and Lila Calhoun (sisters of the bride). Misses Young and Trethowan were prettily attired in white deep flounced cashmere dresses, trimmed with white silk and fringe, and wore large red velvet hats. They carried sticks ornamented with scarlet flowers, and wore golden daggers studded with pearls, the gifts of the bridegroom. The little Misses Calhoun were charmingly dressed in cream voile dresses, silk yokes covered with coarse lace and fringed sashes. They carried a shepherd's crook with scarlet posies, and wore white hats with plumes. The bridegrooms gifts to the little maids were golden bangles, with hear pendants. The mother of the bride wore black silk bemgaline, with vest of sequin net over white chiffon. The groomsmen were Messrs. Horace L. Trethowan, James Calhoun (brother of the bride). The Rev. John Gillies was the officiating clergman. As the party left the church Miss Davis played Meldelssohn's Wedding March.7
  • 13 Jul 1943: CR F. W. TRETHOWAN
    Cr Fred William Trethowan. 73, of Greylynn, Donnybrook, who died in a private hospital, Coburg, on Sunday, had been a member of Broadmeadows Shire Council since 1925. He was twice president. He began his career as an officer of the Commercial Bank, but resigned to take up farming. He was an authority on primary industry problems, and was a frequent contributor to THE ARGUS on these matters. He has left a widow and 4 sons, one of whom, Lieut James Trethowan, served with the AIF in the Middle East and was home on leave from the north at the time of his father's death. Mr E. Trethowan, another son, also served in the AIF.
    The funeral left the parlours of Joseph Allison Pty Ltd. Sydney rd, North Brunswick, yesterday afternoon for Fawkner Cemetery. Rev J. Gillies, Professor Emeritus of New Testament Studies, Ormond College, was one of the Presbyterian ministers who took part in the funeral services.
    Cr Trethowan was married by Professor Gillies at Portarlington, which was Professor Gillies' first charge in Victoria, and Cr Trethowan's was his first marriage there. Cr Mutton, MLA, and other Broadmeadows councillors, and Mr A. T. Cook, shire secretary, were also present.8

  • 18 Jan 1923: PECULIAR SHOOTING FATALITY. FARMER KILLS HIMSELF INSTEAD OF OPOSSUMS.
    The body of Charles C. Kent, aged 45, a farmer, of Oaklands, near Narre Warren, Gippsland, was taken to the Morgue to-day. It appears that Kent was troubled by opossums climbing over his house, and rising on Monday night be took his gun and climbed a tree to shoot them. Next morning he was found at the foot of the tree shot through the head, while the gun still remained up the tree. He was removed to a private hospital, but failed to survive his injuries. (Melbourne, Wednesday.)7
  • 26 Jan 1923: An Unfortunate Accident. FARMER'S MISHAP WITH A GUN.
    An inquest was held before the City Coroner at the Morgue yesterday, on the body of Charles Athlee Kent, farmer, of Narre Warren. Evidence was given to show that deceased, clad in a pyjama suit and coat and trousers, was found lying at the foot of a tree on his property on the morning of 16th January. A fractured rifle was suspended in the branches, and deceased, who had a powder-marked bullet wound in one temple, was holding an electric torch. It was his custom to shoot opossums, which frequent the tree, a Moreton Bay fig tree, under which he was found.
    The Coroner said it looked like an accident. It was possible that deceased had tried to dislodge an opossum and slipped; the gun catching in the fork of the tree, and exploding as he fell. He accordingly found a verdict of death by accident.8

    She carried a shower bouquet of white flowers. The bridesmaids were Miss Mary Gooch (sister of the bride), Miss Margaret Pearson (sister of the bridegroom), and Miss Agnes Thompson. They were in cream muslin over yellow foundations, trimmed with lace and white satin ribbons; large picture hats of black lace trimmed with yellow daffodils and rosette; shower bouquets of yellow and red carnations (gifts of the bridegroom). They wore topaz heart pendants, also the bridegroom's gifts. The best man was Major Pearson (cousin of the bridegroom). Mr. Alex. H. Gooch (brother of the bride) and Mr. Gould acted as groomsmen.

  • 29 Aug 1925: DEATH OF MR. J. B. PEARSON.
    Mr. J. B. Pearson, last surviving son of the late Mr. William Pearson, of Kilmany Park, Sale, died at his residence, Geelong, on August 20. He was 59 years of age. Educated at Geelong Grammar School, Mr. Pearson had been engaged in pastoral pursuits practically all his life. He was owner of Kippenross Estate, Berwick, and later built Kippenross House, now the Presbyterian Girls' Grammar School at Berwick.
    For several years Mr. Pearson lived at Geelong, and was a member of the Council of Agricultural Education, from which he recently resigned on account of ill-health. Like his father, he was a keen racing man, and for years always had a few horses in training. With the Commotion mare Contrast he won the Adelaide Cup in 1899, and with Mischief, another daughter of Commotion, he won the Bagot Handicap in 1898, Mrs. Pearson, who died a few months ago, was the daughter of Mr. G. C. Gooch, of Benacre, Sale. Mr. Pearson's body was buried at Berwick.9
