Mr. Charles Lechenich, engineer, of Barrack-street, whose premises were searched by the police during the German raid, writes us to say that he is not a German, but a Dutchman, who with his family has amply proved his friendliness to Great Britain by subscribing generously to the fund for the relief of the British survivors of the naval disaster interned in Holland.13
  • 1 Nov 1914: Mynheer Lechenich, whose place in Barrack-street was raided last week by the military, repudiates with much indignation the impression thus created that he is a German. He says he is a Hollander of the bluest dye, and his forebears have flourished by the Zuyder Zee for the past 350 years. His sons are British born, and he has no time for the Kaiser and his butchers. Councillor Gibb stated that he had travelled along this road recently and it was impassable.-On the motion of Councillor Bourke, seconded by Councillor Dore, it was resolved that the Secretary write to the Department asking them to remove the timber complained of.21

  • 25 Oct 1883: INSOLVENCY COURT. WEDNESDAY, 24TH OCTOBER. (Before Judge Noel.)
    Re Robert T. Crofts, of Melbourne, provision merchant.— An examination was held in this estate, Mr. Braham appearing for the trustee. The insolvent stated that he had carried on business as a provision merchant in Swanston-street for about twelve years. He was unable to give a statement of the average amount of his weekly receipts, because bis business was a credit one, and he had not kept his receipts for money paid. At the time of the sequestration of his estate he was possessed of some land at Beaconsfield. He had spent £800 on improvements in connection with this property. The leases of two blocks of the land were held by the London Chartered Bank as security for money lent to him. The same bank also held as security an additional piece of land comprising 40 acres.
    Witness had also held some property in High-street, Prahran, but at the time of his insolvency this was registered in his wife's name, she having obtained it from the trustees of witness's former insolvent estate.
    A short time previous to the sequestration of his estate witness had purchased 25 shares in the Benalla Estate Company, which was established for the purpose of mining. These cost him £19 cash, the balance due, £20, not having been paid. He had also bought some shares in the Dark River Company at a cost of £10. Witness had had dealings with Mr. Max Roth for about nine months preceding his insolvency, which for the most part consisted of accommodation bills and the exchange of cheques. The court ordered the insolvent to file a verified account of his dealings with Mr. Roth within ten day, after which the examination was adjourned.25

  • 26 Sep 1885: AN EXPENSIVE JOKE. A peculiar case, arising from the recent strike of the drivers of the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Company, came before Mr. Panton, P.M., and several justices, at the District Court on Monday. Robert Francis Crofts, a driver who did not belong to the Coach-drivers' Union, proceeded against two union drivers, named J. P. Burns and H. M'Donald, for having unlawfully assaulted him. Mr. Gillott prosecuted, and Mr. M'Kean appeared for the defence. Crofts said that he was driving an omnibus on the Port Melbourne line on the evening of the 11th inst, and the defendants got on the box seat beside him. They were smoking cigars, and as the omnibus passed under the railway culvert near the Falls-bridge they each put their burning cigars on one of his hands. The consequent pain was very great, and almost caused him to drop the reins. Mr. M'Kean said that no ill-feeling existed between bis clients and the complainant. They gave him some cigars soon after they got on to his omnibus. What they did was a practical joke, and one frequently perpetrated on omnibus drivers. The Bench considered that it was not a joke, but a most serious and cowardly act. The defendants were each fined £3, with 20s. costs, to be levied by distress.11
  • 19 Sep 1891: SUICIDE AT PORT MELBOURNE.
    A man named Francis Robert Crofts committed suicide in a most determined manner by hanging himself to a bedpost at his residence, No. 21 Pickles-street, Port Melbourne, on Sunday night. The deceased went to bed about 11 o'clock, and on Monday morning a lodger named Scolly went into his room at 8 o'clock to call him, and found him hanging quite stiff and cold to the foot of the bed. The rope by which the deceased had hung himself was twisted, into a most scientific nooze, and had been greased so that it would tighten round his throat easily. When the body was found the legs were bent at the knees so that the feet might be clear of the floor. A scrap of paper was found in one of the pockets, on which a farewell was written to the deceased's friends. An inquest was held at the Floodgate Hotel, on Tuesday morning, by Dr. Youl, Mr. A. J. Bain being foreman of the jury, when a verdict was returned that Crofts hung himself when suffering from excessive drinking.12

This deponent Elizabeth Jennings on her oath saith, I am a married woman residing at Beaconsfield.
I reside about 200 yards from where the accident took place. Returning from posting a letter, I saw the bullock team coming towards my house. Jophn McNaughton the owner was riding on the wagon. When he got opposite my house, he jumped off the wagon for the purpose of heading the bullocks towards the Upper Beaconsfield road instead of continuing straight along the bush tracks they were accustomed to travel. McNaughton cracked his whip. I don't know if he struck the leaders of his team but the bullocks began to gallop down the track towards the creek, instead of travelling the road he intended they should take, and I saw nothing further of his progress. About 20 minutes afterwards I was informed that an accident had happened and that Mr McNaughton had been killed, I then went to the scene of the accident, and saw the dead body of McNaughton, I did not examine the body, as it was apparent that life was extinct.
I did nothing further, as I was informed that a doctor had been sent for.
When I last saw McNaughton he was chasing the wagon, and calling out to the team to stop. I know that the wagon was heavily laden with cement.

This deponent Frank Barnes on his oath saith, I am a Labourer (aged 15 years) residing at Beaconsfield with my parents.
I was on my way on Monday the 21st December to pick gum leaves down the bush road towards the Cardinia Creek, about 5 pm and I discovered the body of a man lying on the bush track. I was driving and stopped about 20 yards from him, and then returned to the residence of Mr Brown some 200 yards distant, and informed Mr Brown of what I had seen, and asked him to accompany me to the scene of the accident. Prior to getting Mr Brown I did not know who the deceased was. Upon reaching the body I discovered it was John McNaughton. I thought he was dead and I did not touch the body. I left Mr Brown at the body and continued my journey down the track and the team and wagon all intact some 400 yards further on where they had come to a standstill

This deponent Enos Brown on his oath saith, I am a labourer residing at Upper Beaconsfield.
At about 4.50 pm on the 21st December last, standing at my back door, I saw the bullock team galloping down the bush track, behind the little store, I saw McNaughton running behind his wagon. The team then became obscured from my view through a cottage and duct which was flying. Then about 10 minutes or perhaps 15, the previous witness, Barnes, came and told me that a man was lying on the road and he did not know what had happened. I asked him which road, and he said the back road, I said that it must be John McNaughton, as I had previously seen the bullocks bolting. I then went with Barnes, and saw the body, which I at once recognised as McNaughton. I placed my hand over his heart and then concluded he was dead, as the heart was not beating. While I was examining the body, a Mr Lewin a line man, in the employment of the telegraph department came along, and I asked him to communicate with a doctor and the police.

  • 22 Dec 1925: BULLOCK TEAM BOLTS. Driver Crushed by Wheel.
    BERWICK, Monday -As a bullock team driven by Mr. Jack McNaughton, of Beaconsfield, was being driven down Inebriates' Hill, two miles from Beaconsfield, on the Upper Beaconsfield road, the team became out of control and bolted. McNaughton attempted for a time to regain control of the bullocks, which were harnessed to a heavy jinker. He was unsuccessful, and when the jinker passed over a rut he was thrown to the roadway. One wheel of the jinker passed over his body, killing him instantly.
    The team continued for about half a mile beyond the bottom of the hill.
    McNaughton's body was brought to Berwick by Constable De La Rue.14
  • 22 Dec 1925: CRUSHED AGAINST TREE. BULLOCK DRIVER'S DEATH.
    BEACONSFIELD.— John McNaughton, a single man, 45 years, was crushed to death on Monday. When descending a hill with a team of bullocks attached to a waggon load of cement he was taking to Upper Beaconsfield the animals bolted. They ran off the road down a pipe track. McNaughton endeavored to apply the brakes, but he was crushed aganist a tree and killed almost instantaneously. He was a well-known resident of Swan Reach and Bairnsdale.15

    A quiet but pretty wedding was celebrated on July 7 at the residence of the bride's mother, Pioneer, the contracting parties being the Rev. Benjamin W. Angwin, A. I. F., late Presbyterian minister for this district and Miss Alma Nora Grant, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs H. J. Grant, Pioneer. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Mr Headon (Presbyterian minister, Scottsdale).
    The bride who was given away by her step-brother, Mr Charles Wilson, was married in her travelling dress—a handsome coat and skirt of gaberdine, with picture hat of black chiffon. She was supported by Miss Alice Taylor as bridesmaid, who was attired in a dainty frock of pale shade fawn gaberdine, and picture hat, also wore the bridegroom's present—a gold brooch. The bridegroom was supported by Mr Paul Jones as best man. After the ceremony the mother of the bride entertained the guests at a dainty wedding breakfast. Noticable was the beautiful wedding cake, the gift of Mr C. Wilson, brother of the bride. The usual toasts were honored. The presents to the bride were numerous and beautiful, principally a quantity of fine house linen. After the breakfast the happy couple left by motor for Launceston amidst showers of rice and confetti and good wishes, en route for Melbourne, where their future home will be. Alma Nora Grant4
