  • 25 May 1872: FARMING IN THE BERWICK DISTRICT. No. III.
    It takes many years of careful selection and nurture to work into a good herd of shorthorns, even with ample opportunities of infusing fresh blood from the best and purest sources. In Victoria the breeding of this superior kind of stook is only in its infancy as yet, and the difficulty of the task is therefore very much intensified. The en terprise is so expensive too that farmers of limited means are debarred from entering upon it unless with the greatest caution ; and very few have the spirit or the courage to tackle it at all. The Messrs P. and J. G. Brisbane, of Warmount, are about the only small farmers that have done it. They occupy jointly only about 330 acres of lease and freehold land together, part of which lies along the saddle of the basaltic ridge, about a mile north from the township of Berwick. Little more than a third of it is really good land ; the remainder is comparatively poor, and has only been partially denuded of its covering of gum and sheoak. On this limited area then, these two canny Scotchmen are proceeding, with the proverbial caution of their nationality, to establish a herd of improved shorthorn cattle. They began their enter prise by the purchase of three cows and a bull at Messrs. Morton Bros, and Leach's sale at Mount Derrimut, in 1867. They have now eight purebred females of two tribes —the Rosa and the Jessamine—the former mainly roan or white, the latter red. Rosa, the head of the one tribe, was imported along with Royal Butterfly, and is now nearly sixteen years old. She bears her age remarkably well, and since she came to Warmount has dropped four calves, and is now carrying her fifth. Of these, two white heifers—both very superior animals— and a roan form, or are to form, part of the breeding stook. They are after Frederick's Cadet and Royal Butterfly 31st. Jessa mine 6th, the head of the other strain, is a handsome red cow of great substance, and with a remarkable development of fore quarter, in which her progeny more or less take after her. She is about 11 years old, and was bred by Messrs. Morton Bros, and Leach, after Lord Raglan, imported. This strain promises to be an excellent breeding one. The eldest daughter of it, Royal Jessamine, is carrying her third calf although only four years old. A white bull calf out of her—Royal Butterfly 42— is a remarkable beast of his age, 10 months, and has alrealy distinguished himself in the showyard, having been placed before the present sire of the herd, Duke of Butterflies, at Dandenong. He has extraordinary size for a calf, but at the same time is very equal all over, and nice to the touch. Another of the tribe, a 10 months' heifer, out of Jessa mine 6th, is also a calf of uncommon size, and the very picture of her dam in color, shape, and style. The Messrs. Brisbane con sider that one of the white heifers out of Rosa is their best breeding animal, but all the time of our visit; she was at Mount Derrimut being served, and we did not have an opportunity of seeing her. Duke of the Butterflies was bought at Mr. Richard Morton's sale in October last for 190 guineas. He is only 20 months old, but he looks a full two-year-old in size, and carries a magnificent shoulder and brisket. His color ia a beautiful dark red, not the roan of his sire, Duke of Brunswick. He took the first prize at the National Show at Melbourne, and has never been beat except when the Dandenong judges, after protracted deliberation, decided to put the white junior before him. It is very en couraging to see animals like these bred in the colony. If such stock can be produced by our colonial breeders, we ought soon to be in a great measure independent of foreign herds. The Messrs. Brisbane had their first public sale of young stook last spring, when five bull calves, the best of which went as high as 75 guineas, were disposed of. Besides their pure shorthorns, they have a good stock of strong useful dairy cows, mostly half bred, being the common bush cattle crossed with shorthorns. The average number milked is about 20, and the only produce made is butter, the refuse milk going to feed pigs. It is a treat to see the milking operation here. The process of bailing is entirely done away with. The cows are all quiet and are milked as they stand loose in the yard, tieing up never being thought of. The remaining live stock at Warmount consists of half a score of horses. The young ones are after Mr. Crichton's horse Matchless, and we noticed amongst them one bay filly of splendid proportions. With reference to the tillage of Warmount we may say that all the land worth breaking up—about 120 acres—has been under the plough for a good many years. The basalt used to yield splendid crops of wheat, but the rust has been latterly so bad that grain growing ia now all but given up. Maldon Island guano having been strongly recom monded for the soil of the district, Mr. John Brisbane last year got half a ton to experiment with, and did so very successfully. He put in about 3 acres of oats, giving 3 cwt. of tho guano to the acre, but leaving a strip in the middle without any. The result was that all the crop except what got guano was a failure. A piece of wheat was so de stroyed by rust as not to be worth threshing or even cutting, and the unmanured strip of oats was very inferior to the other. The yield of the three acres which received the guano ran about 30 bushels to the acre; but it was very much spoiled by two days of hot wind, which came just at the critical period, and scorched the ears so that the grain never filled properly. But for that Mr. Brisbane thinks the yield would probably have run as high as 50 bushels to the acre. The crop was slightly rusted, but not injuriously. For pasture, Mr. Brisbane finds a mixture of perennial rye grass and red clover the best. He has about two-and-twenty acres of such pasture, which has given rich feed all the summer, and is doing so still. For supplementary feed, maize, tares and mangles are used. The last grow excellently on the black soil, and may be put in almost at any time. Mr. Brisbane sowed a couple of acres as late as Christmas, and has now a splendid crop. Amongst the furnishings of Warmount is one of Clayton and Shuttleworth's threshing machines. It was brought out last year, and is similar to the one which took the first prize at the National Exhibition. It is a very complete machine, and is furnished with a very perfect separ ating apparatus, which not only removes all drake and sorrel seed, but separates the lighter grain from the heavier.   • 10 Oct 1908: AN OLD COLONIST.
    The death occurred at Murchison on 20th September of Mr. Peter Brisbane, an old colonist, who arrived in Victoria in January, 1841, by the "fever ship," Glen Huntly, with his father, two brothers and two sisters, their mother having died on the voyage out. After carrying on business in Melbourne for some time, the brothers went to the rush at Castlemaine, afterwards buying property in Berwick, where they carried on cattle breeding for some time. Mr. Brisbane lived at Murchison for 28 years, and was a member of the shire council for 13 years, and justice of the peace for 18 years. He leaves a wife and four sons. He was 76 years of age at his death.10

Anecdote*The Brisbane 'boys' attended the auction in Dandenong of the sale of Crown lands and they bought land at Berwick/Harkaway. The Wilson 'boys' bought their Berwick land on the same day. Euphemia Brisbane would have met William Wilson and they married.
Euphemia was well educated in a private school, and she was a practical person and an excellent horsewoman. It is said that she stumbled over a stone which led to the quarrying of it - at Wilson Quarry.1

Transcript of depositions: John Brisbane on his oath saith, I am a Farmer + Storekeeper + Post Office Master residing at Wharparilla Store in Torumbarry.
I was in Echuca yesterday and returned home about dark. I had tea with deceased, my late wife, deceased and I went into the store together. She said "put that gun away I'll light the lamp". I took up the gun from the corner, and carried it in a horizontal position. The gun produced is the same, the hammer was resting on the cap, the muzzle of the gun was pointing in the direction of where my wife was standing at the time. I came round the corner of the counter. I felt the gun catch against something and instantly there was an explosion. The gun was charged with possum shot. I think, no one, I think age of deceased was 51 years, we were married nearly 21 years and have no family. We were living in the place since April. She fell instantly at the discharge. She did not light the lamp. I could see her easily it was not dark. I knew the gun was loaded. I fired one of the barrells the day before. She never spoke after falling. There was no one but deceased + myself at the time in the house, the girl (Letitia) was within hearing distance. I called her, she then came in she was about 40 or 50 yards distant toward the stockyard. I held the gun in front of the hammer, I told the girl to run and tell Mrs Brown to come over. John Trewin is a neighbour of mine and went for the police. We had no disagreement after my return home. The girl came home with the cows while we were at tea. She (deceased) had her tea before, but said she would have a cup with me. Letitia was at home when I arrived. My cart upset at Echuca the front bar was broken I told deceased of it and she said nothing I was home about half an hour before the accident. Letitia returned home with the cows soon after I arrived. Deceased stood with her right side toward me. I have seen the body lying in the adjoining room and identify it as that of my late wife.

Letitia Brisbane on her oath saith, I am living with Mr Brisbane residing at Torrumbarry Store. I always looked to them as my father + mother but am only adopted by them. I remember yesterday evening I was milking the cows in the yard and heard a gun go off. I could hear anyone call from where I was. Mr Brisbane called me as I came across + I met him at the door. I went in and asked Pa what happened. He said the gun went off + shot mother. I ran up to the body deceased appeared to be quite dead.I then went for Mr Brown leaving Mr Brisbane with deceased he told to go for Mr Brown. I went for Mr Trewin and his son came over. I did not again go into the room where deceased lay that night I believed her quite dead when I went for Mr Brown. I did not know of any disagreement between deceased and her husband Mr Brisbane was sober I never knew him to drink I have seen the body lying in the adjoining room and identify it as that of Mrs Brisbane.

Senior Constable Cooke reports for the information of the District Coroner that a woman named Agnes Brisbane wife of John Brisbane was shot by her husband at Torrumbarry supposed by accident but there was only the two people in the [room] at the time. Const Cooke 62031.6

  • 15 Dec 1873: Accidentally Shot.—The Riverine Herald reports that an inquest was held by Dr. Gunmow, the deputy coroner, on Friday, touching the death of Agnes Brisbane, who was killed at Torumburry on the previous day by the explosion of a gun held by her husband.
    From the evidence of her husband, John Brisbane, who is a farmer and storekeeper at Torumburry, it appeared that himself and deceased were in the shop after dark, when he took up a gun from the corner in which it stood, and as he carried it round the corner of the counter, he felt it catch, and an explosion immediately followed. Deceased fell instantly, and never afterwards spoke. She was 51 years of age, and had no children. The Jury returned a verdict of accidental death.7

    To the Editor of the S. B. & M. J.
    SIR,—In your issue of June 8th, I saw a long rigmarole of mistatements signed "P. Rump," which I beg your permission to contradict. Rumpf tries to make out that the stuff the railway contractor had quarried was the only portion of Gibb's quarry that was condemned, which he knows very well is not true, as the Engineer-in-Chief, Mr Higinbotham, in the presence of McNeil, the contractor, condemned the quarry generally. The Dandenong Engineer has long ago found out his mistake in making the report that Rumpf alludes to. Rumpf says that he has always given satisfaction with the metal that he has supplied from Gibb's quarry; does he remember the one hundred yards he supplied to the Cranbourne Shire Council from Gibb's quarry, when the Councillors in whose riding it was delivered drew the attention of the whole Council to the inferior quality of the metal ? Three members of the Council were appointed to examine it, and having done so, they pronounced it as "Not being stone at all; nothing but rubbish." As for the metal Rumpf supplied to Caulfield Council, I will give you an extract of the Engineer's report from the Brighton Southern Cross, May 12th: "The Engineer complained of Rumpf's metal as being very inferior, instead of being two-and-a-half-inch (2½) metal ; it was for the most part, one-inch-and-a-half, ½-inch, and full of rubbish, and in his opinin two (2) shillings per yard be deducted." If that is giving satisfaction, I can well understand the metal from Gibb's quarry everywhere giving satisfaction. Rumpf's mistake in sending the metal to Caulfield was in not properly packing such tender material and labelling it "This side up; with care." If that had been done, the shaking of the railway would not have broken it from 2½-inch to 1-inch and half-inch metal. Rumpf also states that the neighbouring shires are supplied with metal from Gibbs's quarry—a statement which is utterly untrue, as I have quite recently supplied Cranbourne, Dandenong, and Berwick with metal. He also says that the road from Bain's to the railway gates was made with metal from Gibbs's quarry and is equal to anything in the colony. There is very little heavy trafflic on that road, and what little there is it would not carry until it was patched up by the dayman with the main road maintenance metal brought from Wilson's. That road has cost more to maintain than the whole road from Berwick to Dandenong, which was made with stone from Wilson's quarry. Rumpf says that Wilson's quarry is a thing of the past but it is also a thing of the present, and will be of the future, when Rump and Gibbs's little quarry will be forgotten.—Yours truly, W.   • 14 Dec 1888: WILSON - BUCHANAN.- The marriage of Mr. William Wilson, oldest son of Mr. William Wilson, of Quarry Hills, Berwick, and Miss Annie Buchanan, oldest daughter of the Hon. J. Buchanan, of Burr Hill, Berwick, was celebrated on December 6, at the Presbyterian Church. It was an interesting feature on this occasion that the officiating minister, Rev. A. Duff, M.A., had performed a similar office for the parents of both bride and bridegroom. The bride wore a dress of white faille with bodice and train of moire and the usual wreath and veil. The four bridesmaids wore cream surah dresses, trimmed with valenciennes lace. Mr. James Wilson, brother of bridegroom, acted as best man. Anne Buchanan17

    Mrs. E. C. Kent, an old and respected resident of Berwick, passed away at her residence, Wilson street, Berwick, on April 28, after a long illness, Mrs. Kent was the daughter of Mr. W. Wilson Snr., and sister of the late William Wilson, who was a councillor of the Berwickshire for a number of years. Mrs. Kent was of a genial nature and of sterling character. She leave two daughters, Kathleen (Berwick), and Marcia (Mrs. Bastow, Upper Beaconsfield), to mourn their sad loss. The funeral took place at the Berwick Cemetery, the Rev. W. L. Collins conducting the service.14
  • 19 Oct 2022: From Ireland to Berwick. Kilkieran Place, Berwick
    When the large allotment at the western end of Anne Street Berwick was subdivided in the early 2000s, the new street was named Kilkieran Place, after the name of the old heritage house on the property.
    Kilkieran (Cill Chiarain) is a coastal village in the Connemara area of County Galway, in the Republic of Ireland. The village obtains its name from St. Ciaran who some considered to be the first Saint born in Ireland (others say it was St. Patrick).
    The Wilson brothers, who initially immigrated from Ireland, were some of the earliest settlers in Berwick, having purchased 1000 acres (400 hectares) at an auction in 1854.
    After farming together for many years, following their respective marriages, they decided to split their property into two separate titles.
    The southern portion was to be taken by William Wilson and fronted the Gippsland Road (now Princes Highway).
    The brothers established a diagonal boundary across the property creating two halves. The commencing point of this boundary was opposite the Berwick Inn.
    Accordingly, both brothers came to own a paddock which came to a pointed end opposite the Inn. The diagonal boundary may still be observed running up the hill behind Rheanva Street.
    William Wilson's paddock on the southern side of the new boundary ran up the hill to the west and in 1902 he and his wife Euphemia decided to build a brick house towards the top of the hill to live in for their retirement.
    The house was built by George S Ballantyne, their son-in-law, and named Liskie-Brae.
    For some time, the Wilson's daughter Mrs E C Kent lived at Liskie-Brae with her daughters Kathleen and Marcia, as her husband, a banker was often away on business.
    The two daughters were keen on horse riding and the large paddocks at Liskie-Brae were put to good use for grazing.
    Mrs Kent took a great interest in the Country Women's Association and her daughter Kathleen served as president of the Berwick branch in the 1930s.
    After some years of occupation, the Wilsons sold the house to the Casey family (no relation to Lord Casey) and then it was later sold to Llewellen and Ellie Beaumont, William Wilson's niece.
    The Beaumonts named the property Rheanva, this name having been the name of Llewellen's family home in Swansea, Wales.
    Llewellen and Ellie lived at Rheanva until their deaths in 1954. They died within two months of each other - Llewellen was in his 94th year.
    The property was left to their daughter Anne Jane (Nana) Greaves who agreed to a subdivision of the eastern section opposite the Berwick Inn. This subdivision created Anne and Rheanva Streets - Anne Street, named after Anne Greaves and Rheanva after the name of the property. The house was retained on the remaining large block at the western end of the new Anne Street.
    Subsequently, the following owners renamed the property Kilkieran, a name retained to this day - the current owners of Kilkieran are Mr and Mrs Jim Brownlee.15

  • 11 Jan 1934: OBITUARY JAS. B. WILSON.
    Mr. James Brisbane Wilson, native of Berwick, where he was born 68 years ago, died at his residence, New street, Brighton, on 28th ult. For many years he was a member of Berwick Shire Council, and occupied the presidential chair. Afterwards he resided with his family at Lyndhurst, and became a member of the Cranbourne municipal body, where he also attained the rank of president. Later on, he took up his residence at Brighton, where his parents had resided in earlier years. Again, he attained municipal rank, and became mayor of the City of Brighton, in 1929. He was indeed a public man in the truest sense of the term, and, in every centre where he served the people he was highly respected by all sections, and his efforts were highly appreciated. He was a past-president of the Brighton Bowling Club, and was one who delighted in taking an active interest in all public movements for the general welfare. Deceased leaves a widow, two sons and two daughters to mourn their loss, and we join their many friends in extending sincere sympathy. The funeral was at Berwick cemetery, where many old friends and relatives assembled to pay the last tribute of respect.10

  • 26 Jul 1865: Drowned in a Water Tank. — On Sunday, at Berwick, an inquest was held by Mr Candler, upon the body of Alfred John Brisbane, aged fifteen months. The mother of deceased stated that, on Friday last, she left him in the house and, about ten minutes after, having missed him, she went to look for him and found him in a water-tank by the side of the house. Dr. Stephenson was sent for, but he failed to restore animation. The jury returned a verdict of accidentally drowned.3
