  • 14 Jul 1948: No Teacher's Residence At Upper Beaconsfield. BERWICK A.P.P.U. CONCERNED. THE BERWICK Branch of the A.P.P.U. was greatly concerned to hear from Mr. Douglas Graham, that the headmaster of the Upper Beaconsfield State School is unable to obtain a decent house to live in. Mr. Graham told the meeting that Mr. Wood, who is a married man with four children, is living in a dilapidated old house only two rooms of which are habitable.
The Education Department does not provide a house for the Upper Beaconsfield school teacher, who is responsible for finding a house for himself—a very difficult problem these days. Mr. Wood is held in the highest regard by both parents and pupils, and it is felt that the district is in grave danger of losing his services, as he cannot be expected to tolerate these conditions indefinitely. The meeting unanimously decided that the A.P.P.U. should give its whole hearted support to the residents of Upper Beaconsfield in an endeavor to get the Minister for Education to provide the necessary accommodation.
The secretary was instructed to put the matter before the Minister with the request that he should take immediate action in order to retain the services of this highly respected teacher. Douglas McLaurin Graham14,15

LAST WEEK Beaconsfield Upper residents tendered an enjoyable send-off party to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wood, who have gone to Burwood, to which school Mr. Wood has been transferred.
Mr. W. Lang, president of the School Committee, after expressing the district’s appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. Wood for their good work at the school, presented Mr. Wood with an attractive barometer as a token of esteem from parents and friends. With the gift, he said, went their best wishes for a happy time in their new surroundings.
Zinnia Dennett, daughter of the secretary of the School Committee, also presented Mr Wood with a cigarette lighter and cigarettes as the children’s own gift. Mrs. Wood was handed a fragrant bouquet by Claudie Esdaile.
An entertaining programme from the following, added to the jollity of the evening: Mrs. Noblet, Stapledon and Mr. Nevill Proctor. The adults also contributed a humorous item, entitled “Children In Uniform”. Most outstanding uniform was worn by Mr. W. Russell. Mr. Royle filled the role of school master to perfection. Pupils of the second and third grades staged a clever playlet. Community singing was conducted by Mr. J. Royle and dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Mr. Frank Day and Mrs. Royle.
On behalf of himself and his wife Mr. Wood thanked all for their gifts and a most delightful evening. Supper was arranged by the Mothers’ Club, of which Mrs. W. Noblet is secretary. Mary Terese Wood17

Newspaper-Articles

  • 16 Jul 1887: We understand that a number of ratepayers who desire to see Mr. E. J. Dixon taking part in local politices, intend urging upon that gentleman the desirability of offering his services in connection with the pending election. Without wishing to dictate to Mr. Dixon, we may be allowed to remark that it is hoped he will comply with the request, as a matter of duty. It is a pity that a gentleman of his experience and integrity should "hide his light under a bushel" and we shall continue to hope that he will be amongst the chosen few in the next session of our local Houe of Lords.6
