  • 12 Mar 1902: Upper Beaconsfield. We have sustained a great loss through Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Thompson, old residents, leaving the district. Mr. Thomson's energy and organisation in all local matters, and his wife's unfailing kindness and sympathy in emergencies will be much missed. After selling their property they took rooms at the Gippsland Hotel to enable them to say goodbye to their friends prior to departure to Queensland, where they have purchased a large property. • 27 Apr 1935: PIONEER PASSES. LATE MRS. N. S. THOMSON.
The death of Mrs. N. S. Thomson at her home "Newstead" Kureen, on Monday evening last marks the passing of yet another of the pioneer women of the Atherton Tableland, and particularly of the Malanda district.
The late Mrs. Thomson was aged 85 years. The only daughter of the late William Swanwick, of Kyneton, Victoria, she was born in Victoria, educated in Melbourne and on the Continent, and married in 1874 George Bartlett Heale, son. of the Rev. E. Heale, St. Helier, in Jersey, Channel Islands. After his death some years later she remarried the late Mr. Walter Thomson, of Melbourne, coming to the Far North with him in 1900, and settling at Tolga (then Martin Town) while that district was still largely in its virgin state.
In 1909 the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomson took up their residence at Kureen, near Malanda, shortly before the construction of the railway from Tolga towards Malanda. The lot of the late Mrs. Thomson in this area also was that of a pioneer and she had resided at Kureen until her recent death, being for mary years interested in the welfare of the children of the district and active in the interests of the Church of England and its Bush Brotherhood. She is survived by one son, Mr. E. H. Heale, of "Fleetwood," Kureen, and a daughter, Mrs. J. W. Moule, Kureen.
Her funeral moved from her residence at Kureen to the Yungaburra Cemetery, the large attendance and number of beautiful wreaths testifying to the esteem and affection in which the late Mrs Thomson was held.
Rev. C. Gorbold performed the service at her house and at the graveside.14

  • 18 Sep 1937: MR. HEALE PASSES. FINE PUBLIC CAREER.
A long and active life of service to the Far North, in which, he was always a firm believer, was brought to an end with the death about midnight last night of Mr. Edward William Hesketh Heale, of "Fleetwood," Kureen, at the age of 62.
During his long residence in the Far North, Mr. Heale was ever to the fore in public service, and if ever a man wore himself out in helping the progress of the district he lived in it was Mr. Heale. Mr. Heale, who was born in Kyneton, Victoria, was educated at the Melbourne Grammar School. and the Dookie Agricultural College.
Before coming to the North he was manager of Walbundri station in Northern N.S.W. The North called, and Mr. Heale came to Tolga, where he entered into partnership with Morrow brothers in a sawmill there. While there Mr. Heale saw the possibilities of the wonderful tableland soil, and took up land.
It was here that he married in 1904 Miss Robina Linedale and made his first home.
In 1909 Mr. Heale bought out Morrow brothers' interest in the sawmilling business, and when he took up land at Kureen decided to shift the plant there. Since then he had carried on both interests at Kureen.
    IN PUBLIC LIFE.
Mr. Heale first entered public life as a member for the Tolga division in the Tinaroo Shire, but, resigning on moving to Kureen, was one of the first members of the Eacham Shire Council. For very many years the late gentleman guided the destinies of this local authority as its chairman and when not in office was an ardent supporter of all moves for the welfare of the area. As Eacham representative Mr. Heale was a member of the Cairns Harbor Board for about 20 years, and was chairman on two occasions, devoting his exceptional energies to the benefit of a much wider field than that offered by the shire activities. The important part played by roads in the development of the country was realised by Mr. Heale when, during the railway strike, he helped to pack butter down the range ta Cairns. Mr. W. N. Gillies, a former Premier of the State, was imbued with the same idea, and Mr. Heale lent him valuable support when the project for the construction of the range road was first mooted. The interest Mr. Heale took in the road is commemorated by "Heale's Outlook" on the highway, which gives a splendid view of the wonderful Mulgrave Valley.
The co-operative spirit was ardently supported by the deceased, who was one of the first directors of the Atherton Tableland Co-operative Butter Association and also chairman for many years. He was also one of the first directors of the Mareeba bacon factory.
Mr. Heale was a firm believer in the future of the Tableland and his encouragement and helping hand were extended to many settlers in the district, who have much to thank him for. At his Fleetwood Farm he had some particularly fine stock, his Jersey cattle including some specially imported.
Tn recent years Mr. Heale had not enjoyed good health and for this resson he esme to live at Double Island some months ago. Mrs. Heale was with him when the call came which removed one of the great-hearted workers in the interests of the Far North.
Mr. Heale had five daughters and one son, all of whom survive him. They are Mrs. M. A. Colebrook, of London; Misses Hazel Ruab? Malaya; Helen, Brisbane; Margot, Singapore; and Robina, and Mr. Tracey Heale is his only son. A sister, Mrs. J. W. Moule, resides at Kureen.
The funeral will take place to the Yungaburra cemetery this afternoon at 5 o'clock.6
  • 22 Sep 1937: The Late Mr. Heale. Before commencing the monthly meeting of the Cairns City Council last night the Mayor (Ald. W. A. Collins) referred to the death of the late Mr. E. W. H. Heale, who, he said, had performed a worthy public duty over very many years They had frequently discussed matters of public importance with the late Mr. Heale, who had played his part in every way. A minute's silence in respect was observed.7
