Newspaper-Articles

  • 21 Aug 1884: On Monday night a telegram was received in Kyneton conveying the sad news that Mr James Thomson so well known in this district had been drowned while on his way home to Queensland.
Mr Thomson was the brother of Messrs William and Andrew Thomson, and also son-in-law to Mr Joseph Rogers. He had visited Melbourne on business, and subsequently came to Kyneton to see his relatives, leaving on the return home on Monday the 11th instant. The following telegram appeared in the Argus of yesterday:—"Brisbane Tuesday, Captain Ballistier, of the steamer Victoria, which arrived from Sydney this morning, reports that a saloon passenger named James Thompson is missing. It is supposed that he either fell or jumped overboard. He was last seen by the captain on deck at about 4 o'clock on Monday morning, when he appeared perfectly sober and rational, and conversed freely with the captain." The supposition that Mr Thomson jumped overboard is incredible, and it only remains that he either fell over the ship's side, or was swept off the deck by a wave. That Mr Thomson was perfectly sober and rational it is needless to say.
Mr Thomson who was deservedly popular in this district both in his public and private capacities, was the first treasurer of Kyneton Agricultural Association, and also held the commission of the peace. For some years past he had been resident in Queensland where he had engaged with more than ordinary success, in squatting pursuits. Mr Thomson leaves a widow and large family well provided for, and for whom deep spmpathy is felt in their great and humanly speaking untimely bereavement.4
