  • 9 May 1924: The Bishop (Dr Snowdon Hay) before resuming the business of Synod yesterday, said he was very sorry to say—though no doubt many present had heard of it—that the Sisters of the Church at the Collegiate School had sustained a very great loss and much sorrow by the death the previous evening of Sister Susan. She was found in one of her rooms lying very ill and died shortly afterwards. She came out to Tasmania with Sister Phyllis some 30 years ago, and had been a very devoted servant of the Church. He was sure they all sympathised with Sister Phyllis and the other Sisters in their bereavement. On the motion of Dean Rivers a motion expressing sympathy with the Sisters and the loss the Church had sutained by Sister Susan's death, was passed.16
  • 9 May 1924: SISTER SUSAN. SUDDEN DEATH ANNOUNCED. LOSS TO COLLEGIATE SCHOOL.
After over 30 years' service with the Collegiate School Hobart, Sister Susan has passed away, and joined the great majority.
Sister Susan was found in one of her rooms at the school on Wednesday evening, in a very serious condition, and died shortly after. Feeling reference was made to the deceased at the Synod yesterday afternoon.
The Bishop (Dr. R. S. Hay) said he was exceedingly sorry to announce the death of Sister Susan, of the Collegiate School. She was one of those who had come to Hobart with Sister Phyllis 30 years ago. She had been a very devoted servant of the church, and had been in dearest and closest affection with Sister Phyllis, and had helped her on many occasions.
Dean Rivers moved—"That this Synod offers its heartfelt sympathy with the Sisters of the Church, owing to the death of Sister Susan."
He said that she had been a worker with the Sisters from the beginning of the enterprise in Hobart 30 years ago, and Sister Phyllis had relied upon her for advice and help. She would be a very great loss. The motion was carried, all members standing in silence.17
  • 9 May 1924: Anglican Synod. Business Session Continued. HOBART, Thursday.
At the Anglican Synod to-day the Bishop of Tasmania (Dr. R. S. Hay) made reference to the death last night of Sister Susan, of the Collegiate School, who had carried on the work of the church for the past thirty years. On the motion of Dean Rivers, it was agreed that an expression of sympathy be passed to the sisters of the church in their loss.18
  • 12 May 1924: The funeral of Sister Susan, of the Sisters of the Church, took place on Saturday, the interment being at Cornelian Bay. A short service was held at the Cathedral, conducted by the Dean, the Bishop (Dr. Hay) reading the lesson. There was a large congregation at the service, and a full choir, with Mr. Scott-Power presiding at the organ, rendered the musical portion of the service. There were many representative people at the funeral, and of the Collegiate School. Numerous beautiful floral tributes to the memory of Sister Susan were forwarded.19
  • 15 May 1924: While the wheels of life are flying round, bringing to us how interests and new friends, many an old identity slips out of sight, and when we look round to their accustomed place, they are no longer there. Thus did Sister Susan, a well-known Hobart figure, go out of life as quietly as she had lived.
She had many friends, both in and out of the Collegiate School, where she had lived, for thirty years. Many old Collegiate girls, including those scattered about the North-West Coast, will find it hard to believe that her kindly old face and bent form are no longer to be seen within the school grounds.
Sister Susan possessed that fine type of unselfishness that is unassuming. She also possessed a gift that her duties prevented her from ever developing the gift of writing whimsical stories.
She was buried last Saturday at Cornelian Bay Cemetery, and many beautiful wreaths were sent from all over Tasmania to be laid on her grave.20
  • 6 Mar 1940: SISTER PHYLLIS. Collegiate School Leader
Sister Phyllis, who for nearly half a century has inspired the educational work of the Sisters of the Church of England in Hobart, died at the Collegiate School yesterday. Leader of the company of Sisters which, under the aegis of Bishop Montgomery, was founded in Hobart in 1892, its members coming from England, Sister Phyllis was foremost in the establishment of the primary and secondary schools set up by these representatives of the teaching Order and, up to the beginning of the present year, actively continued her own part in its educational work. Privileged in her family associations and gifted in her scholastic qualifications, she dedicated outstanding powers of personality and attainment to her task. The Collegiate School, responsibility for the upbuilding and development of which, since its inception, has devolved solely on the Sisterhood, is an enduring monument to her devotion and abilities.
Sister Phyllis, who was 85 years of age, attended, at the end of 1939, the retreat conducted at Melbourne by members of the Order throughout Australia. Her health failed after her return to Hobart at the end of January.
A commemorative celebration of Holy Communion will be held at St. David's Cathedral, Hobart, at 7.30 a.m. tomorrow, when the Bishop of Tasmania (the Rt. Rev. Dr R. S. Hay) will be the celebrant. The burial service will be read in the Cathedral at 10 a.m; after which the cortege will proceed to the Cornelian Bay cemetery.21
  • 6 Mar 1940: SISTER PHYLLIS.-On March 5, 1940, at the Collegiate School, Macquarie St., Hobart, Sister Phyllis, of the Sisters of the Church. R.I.P.
SISTER PHYLLIS.-Funeral of the late Sister Phyllis will take place on Thursday Morning (Tomorrow). A Memorial Celebration of Holy Communion will be held at St. David's Cathedral at a.m., and Funeral Service, will be held at 10 o'clock, after which the cortege will proceed to Cornelian Bay Cemetery.

  • 4 Oct 1945: DOCTOR ACCIDENTALLY GASSED
Lack of a sense of smell led to the death of Dr. George Harold Guthridge, 45, of St. Kilda Road, Melbourne, on September 9, witnesses said at an inquest today.
Dr. Guthridge was found face down in the kitchen of his flat on the morning of September 10. The premises were filled with gas escaping from a hole in a pipe from which a tap had been dislodged.
A finding of accidental death was recorded by the Coroner.
Mrs Maud Mabel Taylor, of Coppin Grove, Kew, mother-in-law of the doctor, said that when she entered the flat on September 10, she found that, a refrigerator was blocking the kitchen doorway. Gas filled the premises. She then found her son-in-law dead. He had earlier stated his intention of oiling the refrigerator, said Mrs Taylor. An oilcan was found near the refrigerator.
Dr. Guthridge could not detect even strong smells, she said.
Keith Guthridge, of Creswick Road. Hawthorn, brother of Dr. Guthridge, told the Coroner that he had known for many years that his brother had no sense of smell.
Police evidence showed that the tap, found lying near a gas pipe running along the wall behind the refrigerator, was easily unscrewed and could be pulled out even when screwed in for half a dozen
