  • 3 Jun 1885: BERWICK SUNDAY SCHOOL TEA MEETING. The annual tea meeting and distribution of prizes to the children attending the Christ Churchof England Sunday school took place on Monday evening, the 25th May. For some considerable time past a special effort was made to obtain contributions for this purpose, and Mrs. Hill, Miss Vaile, Miss Frances Elmes and Mr. Michael Elmes succeeded in getting over £12. At an early hour on the morning of the treat Mr. Elmes, the superintendant, was seen with a horse and dray busily engaged conveying forms, fern trees, baskets of crockery and a lot of other things, towards the Temperance hall, and making great preparations for what was to follow. The internal arrangements were then seen to, and took some time to complete. They were no easy task, especially decorating the room with flowers, ferns, and evergreens, by Miss Vaile, who was assisted by some of the senior scholars. At four o'clock the children, numbering forty-two, took their seats at the tables under the guidance of their teachers. The tables were presided over by Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Mackinnon, Mrs. Browning and Miss Vaile. Miss Frances Elmes and Miss Cook, and were further adorned with some beautiful bouquets of flowers, which had been given by Mr. Kent. During the tea the Rev. Mr. Hill and Messrs. Hammond, Harold Vaile and Elmes assisted the ladies con siderably, in fact were kept going the whole time refilling plate after plate with scones, cakes, &c., Miss Coleman and Mrs. Taylor assisting. After the tea and everything had been cleared away, the Rev. Mr. Hill and Mrs. Hill distributed the prizes to the various winners (want of space prevents us from publishing the list in full), but before doing so Mr. Hill addressed the children and reminded them of their reason for meeting there that evening ; of the great obligations they were under to the superintendent and his excellent staff of teachers; that the teachers have been most painstaking, de nying themselves a great deal, and have produced such results as have never been attained at that school before; that the children who have obtained prizes this year should not regard them for their intrinsic value, but as an acknowledgment from their teachers for their past attention to lessons and good behavior, and those who have not been so fortunate should not be dishartened, but should strain every effort to carry off the prizes next year. Special prizes were awarded to Eugene Taylor, a the most regularly attending scholar in the school, and consisted of a handsome bible given by Mr. Fossey; to Lottie Shrapnel, for regular attendance, awarded by the superintendent, Mr. Elmes; and also one to Benjamin Cook, for good conduct. During the distribu tion of prizes Mr. Hammond, the head teacher, was engaged erecting a sciopticon, which was kindly lent for the occasion by Mr. S. Staughton, M.P. Mr. Hammond afterwards exhibited some very appropriate pictures, amongst which was "Blue Beard," and all of which amused the children greatly. As each picture ap peared it was well explained by the Rev. Mr. Hill, Mr. Elmes, and Mr. Harold Vaile, each relieving the other occasion ally. After passing a most enjoyable even ing the children gave cheers for their superintendent, teachers, the Rev. Mr. Hill, and Mr. Staughton, and when the National Anthem had been sung the meet ing broke up, it being about eight o'clock. • 20 Sep 1918: MARRIAGE OF REV. R. J. ROWELL.
There was a pretty wedding in Littleham Church, Exmouth, Devon, England, on July 16, when Captain the Rev. Robert Jameson Rowell, Chaplain to the A.I.F. (of Omeo Vicarage, Gippsland, Victoria, Aust.), was married to Agatha Geraldine, elder daughter of the late Wallace H. Dobbie and Mrs Dobbie, of St. George's, Littleham Cross, and granddaughter of the late Admiral W. H. Dobbie.
The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. W. Millett. The bride, who wore a primrose-colored frock and lovely old Honiton lace veil, was given away by her mother, and was attended by her sister, Miss Dorothy Dobbie, and a sweet little couple, Diana Tayler and Geoffrey Metcalfe, who scattered rose leaves over the bride as she left the Church. - The best man was the Rev. W. Paton, Chaplain (Pres.) to the A.I.F. (from the New Hebrides).
After the ceremony the guests gathered at St. George's till the happy pair started off on their honeymoon. The presents were numerous. Agatha Geraldine Dobbie11
  • 14 Oct 1926: CHURCH OF ENGLAND. INDUCTION OF REV. R. J. ROWELL
It must have been an inspiration and encouragement to the Rev. R. J. Rowell to see the crowded congregation at his induction into the Church of England parish of Cranbourne on Thursday evening, 30th ult. The induction took place in St. John’s Church, and all parts of the district were represented. The service was timed to begin at 8 o’clock, but long before that hour the church was full to overflowing, and seats had to be brought in to accommodate late arrivals. The beautiful interior of St. John’s was enhanced by bowls of spring flowers placed on the altar and organ. The service was choral, and the presence of the Glen Huntly choir of 20 voices gave material assistance.
The various voices were well blended, and the rendering of the anthem, “Send Out Thy Light,” was thoroughly appreciated by the congregation. Mr. Newton, as choir conductor, showed a great knowledge of musical technicality, and Miss Davies, as organist, was all that could be desired. It was a pleasing compliment to the incoming vicar to have the choir of a former parish, where he had labored for a few months as locum tenens.
The impressive ceremony was performed by Archdeacon Aitken, of Mornington, who was assisted by the Rev. F. E. Lewin, of Dandenong. The procession into the Church of the clergy in their ornate vestments, and the choir members in surplices, was carried out with dignity. The obligations of his ecclesiastical office having been assented to and the oaths administered, after solemn prayer, the Rev. R. J. Rowell was duly declared vicar of the Cranbourne Church of England parish. The induction hymn was sung by all kneeling. Archdeacon Aitken, in a learned address, drew a series of parables from the harmonious blending of voices in a choir, and applied the analogy to a clergyman and his people.
In a choir there were sopranos, contraltos, tenors and basses. Each voice had its own distinctive note, and all blended together for the production of a complete symphony. Each person in a congregation was an individual, and by co-operation all should strive for complete unity in God’s work. Discords had their use. In music they toned down into deeper blends of harmony. So life’s discords, pain, sorrow, and misfortune developed the finer traits of character. He asked the prayers of the congregation for their Yicar, and their whole-hearted support. The address of the Archdeacon was rich in suggestive thought and was delivered in a convincing manner.
The hymn “Fight the Good Fight” was sung, and the service closed with the Apostolic Benediction.
An adjournment was made to the Parish Hall, which was almost uncom fortably crowded. Very becoming were the decorations of flowers, These, as well as the church decorations, were the work of the Misses Avis Fattorini, May Kemp, and Molly Brockhurst, and these young ladies deserve every credit for the taste displayed.
An interesting programme of musical items was rendered by Miss Cole and Messrs. Newton and McDougal, of Glen Huntly.
Addresses of welcome were made by Messrs. Hope and Nash, representing the Vestry Board. Both these gentlemen spoke encouragingly of the affairs of St. John’s, and expressed the hope that Mr. Rowell would long remain amongst them. The Rev. Douglas Bruce welcomed Mr. Rowell on behalf of the Presbyterian Church, and assured him of a brotherly interest. Archdeacon Aitken and the Rev. F. E. Lewin also spoke.
Mr. Rowell, on rising to respond, was given hearty applause. He thanked Archdeacon Aitken and the Rev. F. E. Lewin for their part in the service, also the Glen Huntly Choir for its great assistance. He was looking forward to a very happy and useful time as their Vicar, and trusted the spirit of a very hearty co-operation would be their guiding principle. Refreshments were provided by the ladies, amongst those assisting in this direction being Mesdames Hendrickson, Brockhurst, Poison, Hunter, and others. The new Vicar was afterwards introduced to the members of the congregation, receiving a very cordial welcome.
Mr. Rowell was a chaplain in the A.I.F., and has proved a most energetic clergyman in several parishes.
He is a young man, full of enthusiasm, and posseses a very pleasing personality. Being an eloquent preacher and a diligent pastor, the success of his Cranbourne ministry is assured.

  • 14 Jul 1937: Welcomed Home. To enable friends of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. McMinn to welcome them on their return to Hobart, Dr. and Mrs. Frank Fay gave a delightfully arranged sherry party at their Sandy Bay home on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. McMinn are able to tell many thrilling details of the Coronation festivities; they sailed from Tilbury in the Strathnaver, only two days after the historic event and had on board as fellow passengers several Maharajahs returning to India. The travellers have been away for nearly 18 months, and during that time have travelled extensively in Great Britain, and made several trips to the Continent, where their travels were also very comprehensive. On one occasion they took their car and motored all through Germany, down the Rhine and through the Black Forest, and were amazed at the friendliness of the Germans. They were enraptured with the opera in Vienna, and found the prices much cheaper than in England. Of all the beauty spots they visited, Lugano, in the Italian lakes, seems to have impressed them as much as any. They thoroughly enjoyed Winter sports in Switzerland, and although full of enthusiasm about their Continental tours were always glad to get back to England, where the hospitality extended to oversea visitors was found remarkable. To entertain her guests Mrs. Fay wore an attractive ankle-length frock of navy blue sheer georgette, finely shirred about the bodice; the long full sleeves were gathered into a band at the wrist, and a cluster of white flow- ers adorned the high neckline. The guest of honour was smartly dressed in black relieved with a subtle touch of green, showing in an upstanding kilted frilling which edged the high neck, and in the tie knotted in front; her small halo hat of black felt was worn well on the back of the head. Sherry and savouries were served in the drawing-room, where the soft green toning of hydrangea and variegated foliage, and the red-bronze of New Zealand red beech harmonised perfectly with the furnishings of the room. Among others who accepted invitations were: Mr. Francis Foster, M.H.A., and Mrs. Foster, Major and Mrs. R. H. Robinson, Major and Mrs. H. N. Boyle, Capt. and Mrs. J. R. Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Davies and Mr. K. B. Davies, Mr. and Mrs. H. Allport, Dr. and Mrs. H. W. Sweetnam, Dr. and Mrs. E. A. Rogers, Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Whishaw, Dr. and Mrs. A. W. Shugg, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Crosby, Messrs. • 21 Jul 1937: Parties For Travellers: Since their return to Hobart after a most interesting trip abroad for nearly 18 months, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. McMinn have been entertained at several parties. Mrs. E. A. Rogers invited a group of friends to tea one afternoon when Mrs. McMinn, and her sister Miss Mollie Glasson, of Ballarat, were present.
Mr. and Mrs. McMinn were special guests at an evening party given by Dr. and Mrs. H. W. Sweetnam, at their Sandy Bay home, on Thursday, when card games were the order of the evening. The guest of honour wore an attractive frock in one of the new scintillating materials, in a lovely shade of blue embossed with silver flowers; the fullness of the skirt came from the waist, and the bodice was designed with a cape effect A long sleeved frock of flowered georgette was worn by the hostess, the effective patterning being in shades of pink on a black background. Others at this enjoyable party were: Major and Mrs. H. N. Boyle, Dr. and Mrs. Frank Fay, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Allport, and Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Crosby.
Mrs. McMinn and her husband were entertained on Saturday night at dinner by Dr. and Mrs. A. W. Shugg at their attractive home. Myrtle Louise Glasson14
  • 6 Jan 1940: COMMITTED FOR TRIAL
John Colin McDonald, who appeared in the Hobart Police Court yesterday on a charge of breaking and entering and theft, was committed for trial at the next sitting ot the Criminal Court at Hobart. Accused, who was represented by Mr. F. C. Mitchell, was charged with having at Hobart between April 7 and 12 last, broken and entered the house of Walter Driffield McMinn, and stolen a quantity of goods valued at £40. He pleaded not guilty. The Police Magistrate (Col. J. P. Clark) presided and Detective-Inspector R. W. Fleming prosecuted.
Walter Driffield McMinn, army officer, Red Chapel Ave., Hobart, said accused on two occasions had been employed as a gardener by witness. Witness was absent from his home between April 7 and 12, and on returning found it had been forcibly entered and a quantity of goods stolen.

Alexander Henry White

M, #3221, b. 9 May 1882, d. 7 Aug 1915
Birth*9 May 1882 Ballarat, VIC, Australia.
Marriage*22 Oct 1913 Spouse: Myrtle Louise Glasson. St Peter's Anglican Church, Ballarat, VIC, Australia, #M8766.1

Marriage-Notice*5 Dec 1913 WHITE—GLASSON.—On the 22nd October, 1913, at St. Peter's Church, Ballarat, by the Rev. M. C. James, Alexander Henry, third son of Mrs. and the late Mr. Alexander White, to Myrtle Louise, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Glasson. At home, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, 17th and 18th December, "Wilthem," Cole street, Elsternwick.2
Death*7 Aug 1915 Gallipoli, Turkey.

Australian Dictionary of Biography

Alexander Henry White (1882-1915), army officer and maltster, was born on 9 May 1882 at Ballarat, Victoria, fifth child of Alexander White, a maltster from Scotland, and his English wife Eliza, née Collison. Educated by a private tutor and at Grenville College, Ballarat, Alexander followed his father and brother into the malting business, joining Wendouree Malt House. He became a citizen-soldier in 1899: his 'whole heart and soul was in his military work from the time he joined the old (Victorian) Mounted Rifles in Ballarat after leaving school'. Commissioned in March 1904, he gained steady promotion and by 1914 was brigade major in the 5th Light Horse Brigade. On 22 October 1913 he had married Myrtle Louise Glasson at St Peter's Anglican Church, Ballarat.
Transferring to the Australian Imperial Force on 21 September 1914, White was given command of the 8th Light Horse Regiment. He was promoted lieutenant-colonel on 1 January 1915, eight weeks before the regiment embarked for Egypt as part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The unit landed at Gallipoli on 21 May to be employed as infantry. White was wounded in action on 27 June, but resumed command on 4 July.
At 4.30 a.m. on 7 August 1915 the 3rd Light Horse Brigade mounted a bayonet assault on the Turkish trenches at The Nek. Seven minutes earlier, due to an error, the preliminary bombardment had ceased, allowing the enemy to prepare for the attack. White led the first of his regiment's two waves, but was shot down a short distance from his trench. Of the 300 officers and soldiers under his command, 153 died with him and 80 were wounded within minutes. The charge has endured as one of the best-known episodes of the Gallipoli Peninsula campaign: it was the subject of a painting by George Lambert and the setting for the finale in the 1981 Australian film, Gallipoli.
Charles Bean criticized White for leading the charge instead of remaining to supervise the operation; had he stayed behind he might have lent support to Lieutenant-Colonel N. M. Brazier, the commanding officer of the accompanying 10th Light Horse Regiment, in his appeals to Lieutenant-Colonel John Antill, brigade major of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade, to halt the third and fourth waves of the assault. A sensitive man and a conscientious, brave and respected officer, White was mentioned in dispatches for his bold action. His wife survived him, as did their only son, Alexander John Middleton, who joined the Australian Army Medical Corps during World War II and was made a prisoner of war by the Japanese in 1942.3

At All Saints' Church of England, Kooyong, the wedding was celebrated last night by the Rev. W. T. Prentice of Miss Helen Duff Fisher and Mr. Keith Frederick Gibbs.
The bride, who is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Fisher, of Glenferrie road, Hawthorn, was given away by her father. She wore a gown of white angel-skin lace patterned with a leaf design and closely moulded to her slim figure.
The skirt swept back to form a short train, and the bodice was made with a low neckline and short sleeves slightly nuffed at the shoulder line. About her neck she wore the bridegroom's present, a diamond and platinum pendant. Her filmy tulle veil was held by a spray of frangipani and her bouquet was composed of frangipani and water lilies, the bridesmaids were Misses Beth Broom and Rose Billett. Their pretty frocks were made of turquoise blue chiffon mounted over taffeta. The skirts were full and made in redingote style, and the bodices were made with short bill sleeves. Round their waists were swathed belts of chiffon. They carried bouquets of scarlet gladioli and carnations and wore sprays of carnations in their hair.
The bridegroom, who is the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Claud B. Gibbs, of Burke road, Glen Iris, was attended by Mr. David Paroissien as best man and Mr. David Fisher as groomsman.
About 70 guests were entertained later at the bride's home, Coralynn, Hawthorn. Mrs. Fisher's midnight blue and gold lacquered taffeta frock was worn with a matching jacket, and she carried delphiniums and carnations.
The mother of the bridegroom assisted to receive the guests. Her frock was of black cloque patterned with pink roses and worn with a black velvet coat. Her black tulle toque was trimmed with sequins, and she carried a bouquet of pink roses and small blue hydrangeas. Helen Duff Fisher18

POULTRY MEN HIT BY U.K. PRICE DROP
AUSTRALIAN poultry farmers were facing a crisis because of the collapse of shell egg prices in the United Kingdom, Mr. I. R. McCann, Australian Egg Board member, said yesterday.
Poultrymen had experienced another "very difficult" year, he said. Mr. I. R. McCann, chairman, was reporting to the annual general meeting of the poultry produce section of the A.P.P.U. in Melbourne yesterday.
Australian eggs, marketed in Britain, our only important outlet for surplus produce, returned about 2/ a dozen less than the cost of production, he said. Costs of producing eggs, determined by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, were 4/6 a dozen on the farm, plus another 10d. for handling and packing, he added.
    Below cost
The total cost was 5/4, yet poultry farmers received only 3/5½ a dozen. Mr. McCann said the collapse in shell egg prices in the United Kingdom took place because the market was oversupplied.
There were no grounds for believing that any improvement in prices would take place this year, he said. Mr. McCann, who is Victorian producer representative on the Australian Egg Board, was re-elected chairman for a fourth term.19

Village Bell*Jan 1981 Luke Gibbs, his brother, and his mother (who is now around the "Three score years and thirty" mark) came to Dewhurst in 1946. He lived and worked there until the Board of Works took over, and latterly he worked on clearing and levelling for the Board's huge dam.
Much of the land as he recalls it was taken up with orchards, market gardens, pasture, and pine plantations, and on the outskirts was bushland. There was still a profusion of wildlife; a gully running up from Gibbs' place to Ladd's, sheltered wombats and helmeted honeyeaters.
Ladd Road was only a bush track, until it was formed into a road of sorts in 1947-48, but even then it was inadequate for traffic, and it was the subject of appeals from the Fire Brigade to the Shire, as it gave access to the most difficult part of the Brigade's territory.
The majority of landowners were residents, but there were a few weekenders. There was a Post Office and Store, Fire Station, Church, School and Hall, a Guest House, and the Jewish Youth Club Camp.7

To enable Walter Merritt, an orchardist of Upper Beaconsfield, to serve with the colors, his wife has been working the orchard. Merritt enlisted in August, 1914, with the Light Horse.
When volunteers were called for the expedition to German New Guinea, he transferred to the Tropical Forces, and served 710 days in the German colonies. Early in the campaign he was appointed police master, and claims to have been the first white man to cross a chain of mountains running through the heart of New Guinea.
One of his many experiences was administering the oath of allegiance to the natives at Morobi, one of the outstations in the former German colonies.
Merritt was a member of the First Victorian Bushmen's Contingent which went to South Africa, where he served for 355 days. At Rustenberg, when on extended scout duty, he was cut off from his party, and was forced to spend two days in hiding. Eventually he found his way to Pretoria, where he again joined the Australians. Later he was appointed despatch rider to Colonel Tom Price, and had many exciting experiences.
On October 13,1916, he was discharged from the Tropical Forces as medically unfit, but recently was accepted for home service. Elizabeth Harriett Merritt19

  • 2 Jun 1931: CYCLIST KILLED IN COLLISION. The city coroner (Mr D Grant) held an inquest on Monday into the death of Edwin Walter Merritt, aged 26 years, veterinary surgeon's assistant, formerly of High street, Armadale, who died in the Alfred Hospital on the night of March 18 from injuries received when a cycle he was riding collided wih a motor-car in Toorak road South Yarra, the same night. Evidence was given that Merritt had begun to turn south into Surrey road when he was struck by a motor-car travelling west, driven by Joan Lee Hill, single of Avalon road, Armadale. Witnesses considered that the cyclist was hit when he was between the south set of tram lines. Merritt had been out seeking employment.
The Coroner.-I feel that the driver of the motor-car should have seen the cyclist and conversely the cyclist should have seen the motor-car in this case.
A finding of accidental death was recorded. Joan Lee Hill6

'*The Royal Australian Navy has suffered heavily in this war in ships and personnel. It is a source of gratification to know that these losses, suffered in all cases in following the highest traditions of the service, have not been in vain. All operations have been leading up to this present situation, where the Royal Australian Navy, in company with our gallant American allies and with the Royal Navy, is in the spearhead of the attack which is inflicting successive defeats on the enemy.
"The enemy's blow at HMAS Australia is sobering proof of the constant warnings given to the Australian people that there will be no bloodless paths to victory. Much as I regret the deaths, of gallant Australians and the damage to a fine ship, I point to both as a demonstration that complacency among the Australian people must cease.
"Australian fighting men have a hard road to Tokio. Their tasks and their sacrifices must be paralleled on the home front. I call for oversubscription of the Second Victory Loan in the name of these men.".

Beryl Scott

F, #3238, b. 19 Apr 1890, d. 9 Mar 1953

Upper Beaconsfield

Beryl POTTER together with her nurse/companion Lalla Freda JAEGER moved to Upper Beaconsfield in 1941, when they bought 'Kia Ora' and renamed it 'Newstead' (named after a Tasmanian property the Potters had lived in). The property was initially in Lalla JAEGER's name but was transferred to Beryl POTTER within a year. They left Upper Beaconsfield in 1944 to move to 'Newstead Park' in Clyde, and later to South Yarra and Brisbane.1
Note* Robert Steele Scott was born in 1837 at Ardmeen, County Tyrone, in Northern Ireland. In 1858 he came to Victoria where he was engaged in mercantile pursuits for 10 years. After a trip to England he returned to Melbourne and opened a business as an importer. He married Alice Tulloch on 8 Oct 1878 in Launceston. About three years later they returned to Launceston and established an importing business, handling principally hardware. Mr Scott, with Mr M Boland, took the contract for constructing the Launceston-Scottsdale railway. Robert was also a pastoralist at 'Dunedin', St Leonards, for many years.
Robert was made a JP in 1890 and was member of the Legislative Council for South Esk from 1899. He was a Benevolent Society supporter, was associated with the National Agricultural Society and director of various companies, including the National Bank of Tasmania, the Launceston Gas Company and the Queensland Insurance Company. He was also a prominent Freemason, being a member of Lodge of Hope for 42 years. He died on 28 July 1924 at his residence, 'Annsbrae', Launceston at the age of 86 and was buried at the Carr Villa Cemetry.

  • 20 Dec 1917: WEDDING BELLS. POTTER-SCOTT. At Holy Trinity Church on Tuesday afternoon, 18th inst., at 2.30, the marriage was solemnised of Miss Beryl Scott, daughter of the Hon. R. S. Scott and Mrs. Scott, "Annsbrae," Brisbane-road, with Mr Gerald Potter "Tullochgorum," Fingal Canon de Coetlogon (rector) performed the ceremony, in the presence of immediate relatives and intimate friends only. The bride, who entered the church with her father, wore a lovely accordeon-pleated frock of the palest pink Georgette, the only garniture being a girdle of small shaded roses at the waist. Her white lace hat was swathed with "powder blue tulle, one end falling on to her shoulder, and she carried a beautifully arranged shower bouquet of powder blue delphiniums tied with a sash of palest pink satin ribbon. She also wore the bridegroom's gift, a diamond and sap phire brooch. Miss Thelma Scott (sister) attended as bridesmaid. Her smart frock of powder blue Celia silk was accordeon pleated, and finished with a scarf at the waist. Her black velvet hat had lime velvet crown swathed with shaded tulle and she carried a shower bouquet of shaded carnations tied with lime satin ribbon to match her hat. The bridegroom presented her with a diamond and pearl ring. Lieutenant Dudley Pansome (in khaki) accompanied the bridegroom as best man. The decorations in the chancel were beautiful water lilies, white hydrangeas, and many palms and pot plants being effectively grouped. Afterwards Mr. and Mrs. Scott received the wedding party and guests at "Annesbrae" to wedding tea. The reception-rooms and hall were exquisitely decorated with quantities of pink sweet peas and pink carnations, and graceful trails of asparagus fern. Lovely palms added greatly to the gene ral effect, which was most artistic. In the dining-room, where lavish wedding tea (catered for by Mrs. J. Fisher, who also made the artistic wedding cake) was served. The tables were done entirely with pale pink carnations and sweet peas, pale pink tulle, and ribbons, in charming effect, and on the mantle were masses of delphiniums, so that the colour scheme of the 'bride's toilette was reflected. Messrs. JH Taylor, Brisbane-street, arranged all the house de corations, as well as the bouquets. Mrs. R S Scott (bride's mother) wore a navy blue satin charmeuse and large black hat, and she carried a lovely bou quet of crimson roses, with pale blue ribbon bow and sash. Mrs. G. H. Hogg (bride's sister)-Electric blue crepe de chene frock, with Oriental trimming, and black hat with shaded silk swathe and tassel. Mr. and Mrs. Potter left later by motor for the country. Mrs. Potter's travel ling frock was of sand colour gaberdine with white satin collar and cuffs; hat to match, with powder blue swathe and a bunch of shaded roses at one side. Gerald Peel Potter5

  • 11 Jan 1944: BEACONSFIELD MYSTERY. Man With Bullet Wound in Head. Medical evidence is now definite that Douglas Thompson, 48 years, farm hand of Upper Beaconsfield, who is on the danger list at Alfred Hospital, is suffering from a bullet wound in the forehead.
Thompson, who left his employment on Mrs. Beryl Potter's farm at Upper Beaconsfield early on Thursday night last, had a pea rifle with him. He was not seen again unlit late on Saturday night, when he called at a farm a quarter of a mile from his home, and said he had been knocked down by a motor car two days before.
Police have not been able to get any confirmation of this story, and Thompson is now too ill to be further questioned. Senior-Detective Donelly and a black tracker were out yesterday trying to trace Thompson's movements. There is no suspicion of foul play. Douglas George Thomson20
