  • 27 Jul 1870: INQUESTS. An inquiry was hold on Monday, by Mr. Candler, at Berwick, into the circumstances attending the death of Edward Brunt, aged nine years. On Saturday last, deceased, who was a farmer's son, was about a stack of hay, when the stack fell and covered him. He was got out in about 10 minutes, but life was extinct. Some straw had been cut from the stack, and the top being wet made it top heavy, but it was not thought there was any ¡danger of a fall. Dr. Elmes made a post-mortem examination, from which it appeared that death had been caused by fracture of 'the spine, and must have been instantaneous. A verdict of "Accidental Death" was returned. , Dr Thomas Elmes4
  • 30 Jul 1870: CURIOUS FATAL ACCIDENT. An inquest was held on Tuesday at Brunswick [sic], by Mr. Candler, district coroner, on the body of Edward Brunt, a lad twelve years of age, whose death was caused on Saturday in a rather remarkable manner. Ralph Brunt, the father of the deceased, was ploughing in a paddock near the house, and noticed in the course of the afternoon that a stack of straw in the paddock had toppled over. He had noticed his son near the stack previously, and feared an accident. This made him rush at once to the place, and on the way he met a boy, who said he believed that the deceased was under the hay, as he had seen him playing about it just before it fell over, and had not seen him since. The father at once commenced to remove the hay and sent for assistance. In about ten minutes, after having removed nearly a ton of hay, he came upon the unfortunate lad, lying on his face and quite dead, although his body was still warm. The father stated that ke had no idea the stack was likely to fall. Dr. Elmes, who had made a post-mortem examination, said that the whole of the vertebras were more or less fractured, and the spinal cord was completely severed. Death most have been instantaneous.   • 30 Apr 1943: Native Garden. DISTINCTIVE personality vanished this earthly scene a few days ago with the death at Dutson (near Sale) of Thomas Alfred Robinson, who would have been 91 on May 1. A Melbourne Grammar boy, he was for many years a teacher for the Victorian Education Department, but in recent years had been farming and watching the play of Nature. Mr Robinson was born at Collingwood, in (as you may judge from his age) the period when that now-throbbing area was a paradise of wild flowers. Presumably the floral charm of the Collingwood of the day impressed itself on the lad's mentality, for in later years he became a botanical enthusiast in the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria and achieved remarkable success in cultivating native plants.
    I have not had the pleasure of visiting the Dutson property, "Chorizema," but Melbourne botanists tell me that it is one of the most striking gardens of native flowers in the whole of Australia, containing not fewer than 500 kinds. This, surely, is an impressive instance of what enthusiasm can do with our beautiful "aboriginal" flowers.5

  • 11 Aug 1943: MR. JAMES CURRAN. BERWICK mourns the passing of another of its old identities, with the death of Mr. James Curran, of Brisbane street, Berwick. Born in Tipperary (Ireland), deceased, who was 74 years of age, had been a resident of the Berwick district for the past 39 years. He was a retired farmer and as a citizen was universally liked and respected by a wide circle of friends. He was ill for some time before his death.
    The late Mr. Curran is mourned by his wife, one son (Mr. James F. Curran, of Mildura), and one daughter, Joan (Berwick).
    The funeral to the Harkaway Cemetery last Wednesday was largely attended. Rev. Fr. O’Sullivan officiated at the graveside. Funeral arrangements were attended to by W. J. Garnar and Sons.7

  • 18 Aug 1948: MRS. A. S. A. CURRAN. A LINK with early Harkaway was snapped on August 6th when Mrs. Anna Sophie Augustia Curran, of Brisbane St., Berwick, passed away in Melbourne, at the age of 70. The late Mrs. Curran was the daughter of Rudolph Ernst and Johanna Christina Halleur, who were well-known pioneers of the Harkaway district, and she was born there. Her husband, Mr. James Curran, pre-deceased her some years ago, but one son, James, and one daughter, Johanna (of Brisbane St., Berwick) are left with sad, but fond memories of a devoted mother. Fittingly enough her remains were laid to rest among those of other district pioneers in the Harkaway Cemetery.
    The funeral on August 9th was a private one. Rev. Fr. Pooley offered up the graveside prayers and W. J. Garnar and Son attended to the funeral arrangements.5
