  • 4 Jan 1936: PASTORAL PIONEERS—HENRY JENNINGS [No. 107] By R.V.B. and A.S.K.
HENRY JENNINGS was known chiefly as a legal luminary in the early days of Port Phillip, but he held depasturing licences in the Berwick locality. Tarween, Bunyip Bunyip, Balla Balla, and Garem Gam and Green Mount were held by him.
He also was the representative of many squatters in their negotiations and disputes with Government officials. So his name should be included in the list of pastoral pioneers.
Henry Jennings's cousin was Joseph Tice Gellibrand, the promoter of the Port Phillip Association, and the real originator of the State of Victoria. Gellibrand took Henry and a brother, Joseph Jennings, with him to Van Diemen's Land in 1823. John Pedder, just appointed Chief Justice of the colony, was another of the party. Joseph Jennings first be came cashier of the Tasmanlan Bank, and later joined the staff of the Derwent Bank.
Subsequently, as manager of the Union Bank, Launceston, he was able to render material assistance to the Government by way of loans. Henry was articled to a solicitor, W. Patterson. Then he became clerk of the peace and registrar of the Court of Requests. In 1830 he married a daughter of Robert Legge, of Cullenswood, and in 1833 he set up in private practice at Launceston.
    EARLY ST. KILDA
A visit paid to Melbourne in 1837 persuaded Henry Jennings that the new pastoral settlement presented alluring prospects. A few years later he sold everything he possessed in Tasmania, and with his wife and seven children he came to Port Phillip. He settled in the tiny hamlet of St. Kilda, then consisting of about a dozen cottages. There was not a house available large enough to accommodate his numerous family. He decided to build for himself, and erected one of the most costly houses in the colony. It was in Barkly street. The garden ran back as far as Grey street. The first Church of England service at St. Kilda was held on the verandah of the new house.
In 1849 Jennings was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the Port Phillip District. He rapidly attained a leading position. It was soon after he was admitted to practice that he invested in pastoral runs. He also acquired extensive properties in St. Kilda. The growth of St. Kilda, more than his pastoral investments or his profession, made Jennings's fortunes. Jennings also made money from speculation in the gold fields.
His house in Barkly street became a social centre. Henry Jennings died in 1885. This series of articles was begun in "The Argus" on August 14, 1934, and was transferred to "The Australasian" on October 6, 1934.)11

  • 8 Jan 1896: Dandenong Police Court. Tuesday, January 7.
Before Col. Hutton, Messrs. Pearson, Snipe and Rodd, J's.P.
    OH, THE NEIGHBOURS!
Thomas Cody, a boy about 12 years of age, proceeded against Thomas Carroll on a charge, of assault. The parties are neighbors in the vicinity of the Gladstone road. Mr. Coburn appeared for the informant, and Mr. Tanner for the defendant.
Thomas Cody stated that on December 22, when passing Carroll's house with some friends, Carroll came out and knocked him down and kicked him and got a stick and hit witness with that also.
Witness and his father went to Senior constable Taylor and showed him the marks of the assault. —By Mr. Tanner : Did not throw anything at Carroll or strike him with a stick. No one of the party assaulted Carroll.
Maggie Cody, detailed very fluently a lot of bad language, which she ascribed to Carroll. According to her version Carroll used the boy very badly.—Mr. Tanner examined the witness to her persistence in continuing to go through defendant's paddock, but the girl replied that she took no notice of Carroll.
Michael Cody also gave evidence, and Senior constable Taylor said the boy was badly bruised when brought to him.
The defence was that the informant thad no right to cross the property, and that Cody first struck the defendant.
Honora Carroll, wife of defendant, said that Cody started the row by throwing stones at her husband, who threatened to take the boy to his father, but was prevented by Maggie Cody. Carrol did not kick the boy. The Codys' came about their house at all hours of the day and night.—By Mr. Coburn : Did not use any bad language. What Carroll did to the boy would not cause any marks.—By Mr. Tanner : They only wanted to keep the Cody's away from the place.
Thomas Carroll, the defendant, corraborated his wife's evidence; adding that one of the girls said she would let his — — brains out. — By Mr. Coburn : Maggie Cody interfered with him so that he could not take the boy to his father as he intended. Witness admitted giving Cody a couple of "skelps," as the boy used very bad language to him.
This concluded the evidence, and a second case of Margaret Cody v. Thomas Carroll for using insulting language was then taken.
Complainant glibly rolled off a string of oaths which she alleged defendant used towards her, and her evidence was supported in some measure by the statements of Christina and Grace Kriegel. This case resolved itself into a question as to whether, if the words complained of were used, they could be heard by any person standing on the Gladstone road. Cody senior gave evidence of marvellous powers of hearing, but the Bench dismissed the
    case, without costs.
On the charge of assault Carrol was fined £1, with two guineas costs, in default seven days' imprisonment. Grace Emma Kriegel3

  • 3 Apr 1871: SUDDEN DEATH AT SOUTH YARRA.
Mr. Candler held an inquest on Saturday, at South Yarra, on the body of Annie Janet Croft Lechmere, aged 25 years, wife of Robert Lechmere, poulterer. The deceased had enjoyed good health up to Friday night, when she retired to rest at half-past 9 o'clock, having complained of a pain in the head about ten minutes previously. Soon afterwards her husband went to bed, but immediately after he had put out the light, the deceased exclaimed, "Oh, my head," and began to breathe heavily. Dr. Wooldridge was sent for, and arrived in about five minutes, when he found the deceased insensible and gasping for breath. She died in about a minute and a half. Dr. Wooldridge made a post-mortem examination of the body, and deposed that the cause of death was sangueneous apoplexy. The jury found a verdict accordingly.4

  • 29 Jan 1885: The following casualties were admitted into the Alfred Hospital yesterday :—Robert Lechmere, aged 16 years, a carpenter, living at Toorak-road, having his left-hand shattered and three fingers blown off, caused by a gun with which he was duckshooting, at Elwood, bursting.9
  • 30 Jul 1923: WON FIFTY RACES. Yachtsman Dies. ACCIDENTAL FALL
By the death of Mr Robert Lechmere yesterday, caused, it is believed, by an accidental fall at St. Kilda on Saturday, there passed away not only a yachting identity, but a member of one of the oldest families of England, dating from the time of the Conqueror.
On Saturday night Mr Lechmere was found in a lane in St. Kilda, unconscious and with a wound on his head. He was taken to the Alfred Hospital, where the doctors found that he was suffering from a fractured skull. Yesterday afternoon he died. He was 54 years of age.
Mr Lechmere was regarded as one of the keenest skippers the bay has ever known. As a boy he had been apprenticed to Murray, the boat builder, among whose masterpieces was the Janet, which he designed and built for the late Sir William Clarke. It was during his apprenticeship that young Lechmere gained the love of yachting, which he never lost.
He owned many boats, at one time and another, but the most notable was the Salatia, with which he competed in more than 100 races in Hobson's Bay, and won over 50 prizes.
Some three years ago Mr Lechmere sold the Salatia to Mr W. Smith, commodore of the Geelong Yacht Club, and, though in late years her name has not appeared in the list of entrants in races, she is still afloat.
Mr Lechmere's father was in holy orders, and was the younger son of the second baronet. The title was created in 1818. Originally the family came from the Low Countries, and obtained lands at Hanley, in Worcestershire from William I, which have been held by them ever since.10
