  • 7 May 1929: DEATH OF ALDERMAN THEAR. Former Mayor of Geelong.
    GEELONG Monday.—While sitting in his office at his furniture warehouse in Malop street this afternoon Alderman Joseph Alexander Thear, a leading citizen of Geelong, and a former mayor, collapsed and died before medical aid could be summoned. For about 18 months Alderman Thear had been in ill health and he had been advised by his doctor, owing to the state of his heart, to withdraw from all public activities. A native of Geelong, Alderman Thear was aged 50 years. He had been associated with the furniture trade from his boyhood. As a young man he took a keen interest in the affairs of the Order of the Sons of Temperance and he was Past Most Worshipful Patriarch. He also took an important part in the development of the Geelong Friendly Society's Dispensary and later in the formation of the Medical Association in conjunction with the dispensary. Because of his association with the friendly societies he was elected to the committee of the Geelong Hospital and had much to do with the building of the Kitchener Memorial Hospital. On the retirement of the late Mr. James Wighton as president, Alderman Thear was elected president of the hospital committee and he held office up to the time of his death. He made a close study of hospital affairs and was recently elected president of the Country Hospitals' Association. He had been nominated as one of the association's representatives on the Charities Board to be elected in June.
    Alderman Thear was elected to the city council as a representative of the Villamanta Ward eight years ago. He gave close attention to the financial activities of the council and was chairman of the finance committee. He was mayor of the city in 1925-26. Three years ago Alderman Thear was elected president of the Geelong Football Club and he was present at the football match on Saturday, when he addressed the players after the game. He was a past Worshipful Master of the Kardinia Lodge of Freemasons and president of the Retail Traders' Association.
    Alderman Thear leaves a widow and three daughters, Mrs. Nott, Ballarat; Mrs. L. Gell, Geelong; and Miss Evelyn Thear. The funeral will take place at the Eastern Cemetery to-morrow at 4 o'clock.7
