  • 9 Aug 1884: The Attempt to upset a Maldon Train
    To the editor of the Age. SIR.—I read in the Age of to-day that at Castlemaine, four youths, for placing trolly wheels on the Maldon railway line one Sunday, whereby the death of a young man named Dunn was caused, were bound over by Judge Quinlan in their own recognaisance of £200 each, and a surety of £50 for their future good conduct for a period of twelve months. The crime of these youths was manslaughter. Had they been well whipped and sent to the reformatory, it would have deterred others like them from making similar attempts at mischief, for such are always despicable cowards, and it would likewise have given more comfort and confidence to the travelling public.—Yours, &c.   • 30 Jun 1886: BERWICK. From our own correspondent, The annual tea meeting in connection with Christ Church, Sunday school took place in the State school last week, and was a great success: The tables were loaded with viands of the choicest quality, and it is needless to add that ample justice was done to them. The following ladies presided at the tables:—Misses Vaile, Cook, Elms, Vaile, a'Beckett, Chapman and Mrs Hill. After the children had satisfied their appetites, the prizes were distributed. Mr. Hill spoke in glowing terms of the services rendered by Mr. M. Elms the inculcator of the moral precepts into the minds of the children, and told the young ones to adhere to the teachings of their Master. He concluded by asking the children to remember that Mr. Elms had been put to a great deal of trouble in bring about this school fete; and by giving their master as much assistance in the future as they had done in the past he had little doubt but their efforts, and the teachers' as well, would be rewarded with success. Mr. M. Elms then gave a brief address, in which he alluded to the making of a name for the school, and told the children that regular attend ance and submission to the dictates of their teachers were the tools to work with to crown the edifice of their ambition. The followinig games were then indulged in for the amusement of the young :-The Irish Schoolmaster; in which Mr. M. Elms sustained the character of the school master, and Mr. Vaile that of the scholar ; Blow the Candle out John, by the children ; two tricks with handkerchiefs by Mr. Hill, and several other comicalities in whiclh all took part, and a very pleasant evening was brought to a close by singing the National Anthem. Captain Vaile kindly sent up rockets, which were instrumental in adding brilliancy to the festivity. Three cheers were given for Captain Vaile, and three more for their kind teacher, Mr. Elms, and the company dispersed.12
  • 4 Jan 1887: THE LOSS OF THE KEILAWARRA. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS.
    Sir,-The sad loss of life by the foundering of the Keilawarra is another instance of the deplorable mania that those in charge of steam vessels have for giving the order "full speed astern" the moment their ship collides with another or runs aground. The second engineer on the Helen Nicoll stated that the Keilawarra's propeller was revolving astern when she sank , this would not only account for the unsuccessful attempts to launch the boats safely, but for much of the confusion that ensued. It is a far more difficult and dangerous operation to launch boats while the engines are moving slowly astern than it is to launch them while going full speed ahead. I would not have written to you upon this subject had there been proper comment made upon it during the Marine Board inquiry , but not seeing any, I write in the hope that shipmasters will investigate the terrible results that have so often followed this mad order. The Helen Nicoll and the Keilawarra were stopped by the force of the collision. 'They should have remained as they were, and it is my belief that there would not have been any loss ot life "Where is the hurry ? The mischief is done "In cases of collision a lew minutes will show which ship is most likely to keep afloat, and it the water is comparatively smooth, as it was in this instance-for some of the people said there was no break on the waves-they would be unlikely to injure each other much more. If a ship runs on the rocks, and knocks her bottom in, you would say it was madness to try and back her off into deep water, and yet such trial appears to be generally made. Alas I sometimes successfully. The s. s. Cadiz, early in 1875, came off the rocks of Ushant, and not a life was saved. Again, if you will allow me space to quote one or two instances. One that is well known is the loss ot life- 438 out of 630-at the wreck ot H.M troopship Birkenhead, February 26, 1852. An extract from Commodore Wyvill's report runs as follows .
    " In 10 minutes after the first concussion, and while the engines were turning astern, the ship struck again under the engine room, bulging the sides in several feet, and tearing open the bottom, the water rushed in, drowned the fires, and stopped the engines, the engineer (Mr. Renwic)k and stokers making their escape to the upper deck. Instantly the ship broke in two abaft the mainmast and sank "
    H M. yacht Alberta backed astern after collision with the yacht Mistletoe ; the latter sunk immediately and two lives were lost. H M. ship Iron Duke, after collision with H.M. ship Vanguard, backed into the fog quite out of sight, and had she been unable to find the sinking ship the country would have had to lament a loss perhaps second only to the loss of H. M. ship Captain.
    By the stranding of the s.s Schiller the loss of life was terrible. For one hour after striking her engines were kept moving astern, during which time it was nearly impossible, as it always is, to launch boats safely. She then fell broadside on to the reef and began to break up. In all the cases I have referred to I think the loss of life would have been very small, perhaps nil, had the order to reverse the engines been delayed until the vessel's position and state of the hulls could have been observed.
    For 43 years I was a sailor, so naturally I take much interest in all that appertains to the sea. I read with great interest all your reports, and am, &c., T. G. VAILE. Berwick, Jan. 1.13
