  • 25 Mar 1937: OBITUARY. Joseph Allen Coxon, an old and respected resident of this town, and of Officer, Kooweerup and Malmsbury, passed peacefully away in a private hospital, Moreland, on Tuesday, March 16, at the age of 77 years, after a short illness. Mr. Coxon was born in South Australia, and came to reside in Australia when a child of two years. Thirty years of his life was spent at Officer, with his parents, who were farmers, and a pioneering family. For 10 years he lived at Narre Warren, five at Kooweerup, seven at Kongwak, and the last 19 years he spent at Malmsbury. He was twice married, his first wife being Isabella Beverdige Duncan, the well-known family of Pound road, Hallam, and, there are two surviving children of the marriage—Janet (Mrs. Gilmour), of Coburg, and Margaret (Mrs. Bailey), of Yannathan, and one, daughter. The second wife was Mary Jane Banks who predeceased him some years ago at Malmsbury. Deceased had only been ill about a fortnight, and his untimely end came as a shock to his numerous friends. On A.N.A. Day he paid a visit to the sports at Officer to renew friendships, and was gladly received. He was a frequent visitor to the many local agricultural shows, and frequently visited Lang Lang show, where he met many old friends. Deceased was a member of the Moreland Bowling Club, and at one time was also a member of the Dandenong Bowling Club, and was one of the oldest members of the I.O.R. Berwick Lodge. The funeral, which took place on Thursday afternoon of last week, left his daughter’s residence, “Our Home,” 81 Campbell street, Coburg, at 2 o’clock, for his last resting place in the Dandenong Cemetery, arriving there about 3.30. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. John Meers, and Mr. W. J. Garnar had charge of the funeral arrangements.11
