Alfred Chalk

M, #27064, b. 1839, d. Nov 1916
Marriage* Spouse: Charlotte Maria Stanlake.

Birth*18391
Land-Note*30 Jan 1909 PAK-1A (Application 37,310). Simon Paternoster In the matter of Application 37,310.
I, Alfred Chalk of Beaconsfield in the State of Victoria Poundkeeper and Estate Agent do solemnly and sincerely declare THAT I have been a resident of Beaconsfield in the District for over 25 years and have known the land the subject of the application (and which land is shewn and coloured red on the survey plan dated 6th August 1908 made by Mr W P Steane M C E and now produced and shewn to me and marked "A") throughout that time and during part of such time I acted as agent for a former owner of the said land and in respect thereof.
That the fences enclosing the said land and erected on the boundaries thereof as shewn on the said Survey plan or the renewals of such fences as hereafter mentioned have been continuously standing and subsisting (save only while the new fences hereafter mentioned were being erected) for at least twenty years - About 5 years ago a new cyclone fence was erected on the southern boundary of the said land as shewn on the said survey plan and a similar fence was shortly afterwards erected on the Woods Street boundary both such new fences replacing old fences which were then standing and which were never removed for the purposes and such new fences were erected on the same lines as the old fences they replaced.
That to the best of my knowledge and belief the boundaries as shewn on the said survey plan have always been accepted and regarded by the respective owners and occupiers of the said land and of the adjoining lands as the true boundaries of the said land and I have never heard of any dispute with regard thereto.
Declared at Berwick this 30th January 1909.2

Newspaper-Articles

  • 8 Nov 1916: Another old resident of Berwick passed away last week in the person of Mr Alfred Chalk. The old gentleman, who was about 77 years of age, had not enjoyed good health for some time. Death took place on Thursday last. Mr Chalk came to the district between thirty and forty years ago, and has been associated with it ever since. For many years past he has held the position of poundkeeper. He was a prominent member of the local Church of England, and one of the vestrymen. During his long residence here he made a large circle of friends, by all of whom his death will be sincerely regretted. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family in their sad trouble. The funeral took place last Saturday, at the local cemetery, when an impressive service was conducted at the graveside by the Rev. A. J. Cole.5

Sir, —I take it that this was your own comment on Cr. Robinson’s remark (21/10/42): “Nobody uses the path” when Mr. Pateman’s request to Berwick Shire Council for something to be done to the footpath from Berwick to Beaconsfield was being considered.
The request was only reasonable, and has been long delayed. The path (?) is not a credit to the shire, and it is to be regretted that the remark was passed. It is not in keeping with the facts. The path is used, but owing to its condition, especially in winter or wet weather, the road is preferable.—Geo. BURGE, Beaconsfield.

His offer is a good one and should be appreciated by the residents Thanking you, yours etc., GEO. BURGE, (Beaconsfield).25
  • 21 Nov 1945: Sunday Sport Complaint From Beaconsfield “What Is Organised Sport?" Enquires Ratepayer
DISAPPOINTMENT that council had not given a firmer and clearer indication of its attitude toward Sunday sport was expressed by Mr. Geo Burge, a Beaconsfield ratepayer, in a letter to the Berwick Council, read at the monthly meeting last Friday.
Mr. Burge wrote: “I was interested in your reply to the Council of Churches (Dandenong “Journal,” October 31st).
Am I wrong in asking what is organised sport? Was the match of last Sunday organised sport? If teams of elsewhere decide to come and play their match would that be organised sport? If the local boys invite another team to come, is that organised sport?”
    “BEGINNING OF CONTINENTAL SUNDAY”
“Personally, I was disappointed that a firmer and a clearer assurance was not given. If these and other games are to be continued it will be the beginning of the Continental Sunday. I have memories of the past. I am interested in the spiritual life and welfare of our young people.”
    PROTEST AGAINST SUNDAY DANCE
In a further letter Mr. Burge stated: “Herewith I wish to complain and lodge a protest against the dance on Sunday, November 11th, in the Public Hall, at Beaconsfield, from approximately 5 to 7.30. This was the finishing up of the picnic which arrived in the morning. Permission had been granted to hold the dance. What I would like to know is: Are dances allowed in the hall on
Sunday, or Sunday night? If so, this letter goes for nought. If not allowed, will you please inform the Hall Committee and see it does not happen again?
Beaconsfield has many attractions but what I fail to see, and strongly object to, is that the peace and quietness of our township should be upset by outsiders coming in who have little or no respect for what the Sabbath stands for, making it a dumping ground for those who have no interest in it.
What those who passed through the town and saw the five vans and some cars in front of the Hall thought would be interesting to know. Surely, it would not be a compliment to those who allowed it! Rumour has it other picnics are to follow!”
"While not conversant with all the facts, Cr. Whiteside said that he was conversant with a few. Apparently the hall committee had leased the hall to these picnickers for a few hours and it seemed to the committee quite legal to do so. He did not ‘think’ any conditions were laid down. Financially, it was a very satisfactory engagement. But there was a larger issue involved—that of Sunday sport. “We are living in a democratic age to-day,” the President continued, “and in the matter of the Government of these little halls we are trying to get the residents govern their own committees. These committees are definitely responsible to the residents.
Whether they carry out their duties satisfactorily or otherwise is a matter that will be tested at the annual election—in Beaconsfield’s case next month.
These elections give everybody a chance to review the actions or faults of the committee.
If residents in general are not in favor of Sunday sport or Sunday dances they can come along in a democratic way and say so. If they are in favor, of them they can also come along and say so. That way we get an expression of public opinion.”
Council, he considered, should not be asked to police the conduct of the halls, but it was for them to see that residents had the opportunity of electing a committee that would carry out their wishes. The management of the Beaconsfield Hall was in the hands of the committee appointed. There would be a further election next month and any views the writer wanted to bring for ward on the conduct of the hall, should be brought forward at that meeting. On the motion of Crs. Whiteside and Richardson a copy of Mr. Burge’s letter is to he forwarded to the Hall Committee.
Cr. Anderson: He asks us if we condone this sort of thing.
Cr. Greaves: I understand it was a semi-private affair.
Cr. Whiteside said that if the function complained of interfered with church services it shouldn’t be tolerated. The issue was very involved—just how involved he didn’t think Mr. Burge realised—issues which he mightn’t be prepared to stand up to. They could only deal with the matter in a democratic way.
Cr. Houlihan: I thought we made it definite that we were opposed to organised sport on a Sunday but had no objection to sport that was not commercialised.26
