Newspaper-Articles

  • 24 Nov 1954: Death of Former Berwick Show Secretary
MR. JOHN T. CHAPPLE, grand old Berwick citizen, who passed away last Friday at the venerable age of 85, was a former secretary of the Berwick Agricultural Society and one of its Life Members—an honour conferred on him as a reward for outstanding secretarial service over many years.
He was also a local preacher of more than 50 years standing at Rupanyup and also in Dandenong. Several years ago his sincere work for his Church as a lay-man was recognised when he was presented by the Methodist Conference with a certificate in recognition of half-a-century of devoted church work.
He was closely associated with the Methodist Church at Berwick and when services were discontinued there he rendered equally loyal service to the Presbyterian Church. For many years, he was librarian at the Berwick Mechanics’ Institute.
About three years ago he and his wife —who pre-deceased him about 15 months ago—celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Berwick will always have fond memories of this kindly old gentleman—one of the old school and one who went through life doing good.
His son Derek is headmaster of the Robinvale State School and his brother, Rev. E. H. Chapple, is a retired Presbyterian Minister living at Oakleigh. Two daughters, Beryl and Lesley, also mourn the loss of a devoted father.
The funeral which left deceased’s late home in Peel St., Berwick, on Monday, was largely attended and there were many beautiful floral tributes. Rev. S. C. Blainey and Mr. F. Singleton officiated at the graveside when the remains were interred in the Berwick Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were in the hands of Garnar and Son Pty. Ltd.14
