A large concourse of persons-many of them from a considerable distance-were present to witness the interesting ceremony. The Presbytery having been constituted, the Rev. S Corrie preached from Isaiah lii, 7. The usual questions were asked by the Rev J Hetherington, who offered up the ordination prayer and delivered the charge to the minister. The Rev D Boyd then addressed the people, and the services were concluded with prayer and praise. A meeting of the congregation was held immediately after, Alexander Patterson, Esq., in the chair, when seven gentlemen were appointed a committtee to take measures for the erection of a church and manse, &c. The committee then met, adopted a plan of a manse, and instructed one of their number to call for tenders as soon as a site in the Village reserve of Cranbourne for which application have been made to Government, shall have been obtained.6

  • 8 Apr 1868: At the City Police Court yesterday, a person named Elias Jeffery was summoned for the maintenance of three of his children, at present inmates of the Yarra Bend. The proceedings were taken at the instance of the Master in Lunacy, under the new Lunacy Act, which gives the bench power to make parents contribute, according to their means, to the maintenance of their children under such circumstances. An order was made against the prisoner last October to contribute towards the support of the children, but this he had never complied with. Mrs Elizabeth Jeffey, the step-mother of the children, swore that her husband was in a position to pay, and the bench made an order for the payment of £32 8s., being arrears due from the 1st of October until the 1st of April ; and, further, for the payment of 24s a week, for twelve months ; the defendant to find one surety of £100 for the due carrying out of the order. Newspaper-Articles

  • 5 Feb 1914: Death of Mr. Charles J. Jago, J.P. Mr Charles James Jago, the well-known ex-councillor of the City of Richmond and the Shire of Dandenong, died at his late residence, "Richmond Grange," Westall road, Springvale, on Sunday, at the age of 77 years. Mr Jago was prominent in business circles in the city in the early days, and subsequently lived in Richmond, where he amassed valuable property in what was then known as the Burnley Paddock. Whilst resident in Richmond deceased took a keen interest in municipal and all public concerns, and served for many years as a city councillor, besides being elected mayor on more than one occasion, when he entertained most generously. He afterwards purchased a property at Springvale, and the ratepayers of the North riding of the Shire of Dandenong sought and obtained his services in the shire council, from which he eventually retired as age crept upon him. In public life Mr Jago was deservedly popular. Mr Jago had the distinction of having fought in the Crimea war, and many were the tales he told of the gruesome experiences of that cruel campaign, but not forgetting the humorous element that attends as a rule in even such fearsome matters.
The deceased was possessed of extensive property at Springvale, and was twice married. He leaves a widow and family of three girls to mourn their heavy loss.
The funeral took place on Tuesday, when the remains were interred in the Booroondara cemetery. Many of the deceased's old colleagues on the Bench and in public life joined in the cortage
to the graveside and took part in the obsequies for the dead.
The flag at the Dandenong town hall was flown at half-mast as a tribute of respect to the deceased gentleman.9

NOTE

Some family sections show only the children who were associated with Upper Beaconsfield.

Some individuals may be featured because members of their family were associated with the Upper Beaconsfield area, even though they themselves never lived here.
