  • 9 Feb 1892: THE LATE WILLIAM GRAHAM, ESQ.
    Very considerable surprise and sorrow were recently caused in commercial circles in Melbourne, by information reaching friends there of the death of Wm. Graham, Esq., of the firm of Messrs. Connell, Hogarth, and Co. Referring to the painful event The Journal of Commerce of the 2nd instant, says :
    The intelligence received by cable that Mr. William Graham, senior resident partner of the well-known merchant firm of Messrs. Connell, Hogarth and Co., had died on 23rd January, in London, came as a great shock to the whole mercantile community. The circumstances were all the more sad because the deceased gentleman was just making preparations for his return to the colony by the R.M.S. Arcadia, due to leave London on 5th February, after a year's trip to Europe, with which, since the early days of his youth, he had made no acquaintance. We are irresistibly compelled to recall a function held at Scott's Hotel on the 12th of March last year, when 120 gentlemen, representing the cream of the colony's commercial life, assembled under the presidency of the Hon. James Service to take leave of, and wish bon voyage to, the subject of this brief memoir. It may be stated that nothing there said in any way exceeded what was but a fitting tribute to one of the brightest ornaments of the trade of Australasia, and we remember how feelingly, yet modestly and simply, Mr. Graham acknowledged the compliments paid him, and left behind him a standard up to which all men should endeavour to act. He said-"He felt it was not always possible to act up to an ideal, but that he could conscientiously say he had done his part to carry out the work which laid nearest to his hand." The kindly christian gentleman, who has been cut off in the prime of his life and is the middle of a career which promised to be brilliant, was a man whom all honest men delighted to honour. Unassuming, to a degree, verging almost upon timidity, in his private life he yet was ever ready to stand up sturdily for the right. A diligent worker himself, he was necessarily anxious that the staff of the house of which he was one of the principals should be inculcated with that first principle of business, and to that end, with kindly words and sometimes more practical recognition, he was ever ready to encourage them. In his relations with other men he was the soul of honour, and as he was never known to asperse the character of another, so it may be said he had not an enemy in the land. Most of his time was given to the direction of the business of his firm, and thus it happened that it was not until within the last three or four years that Mr. Graham could be induced to take any part whatever in public life, and even at his death he held but few offices, the chief amongst which was as one of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce, where his wide mercantile experience, his matured judgment, and quick grasp of all the bearings of difficult subjects relating to the trade of the colony were of the utmost service to the community.
    Mr. Graham was born in Scotland, and in his early youth sought this new land, where, after completing his education at the Scotch College, he entered the employ of Messrs. Charles Watson and Co., a firm which in 1866 was incorporated with that of Messrs. Connell, Watson aud Hogarth. Passing through the various branches of the establishment, his course being marked by that diligence and conscientiousness for which he was remarkable, he obtained his reward. In 1876, when he was admitted partner into the firm then trading as Council, Hogarth and Co., a position which he retained until his decease. He was elected a member of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce in 1889, and was appointed on his leaving for England last year with Messrs. J. Balfour and Huddurt to represent the Melbourne body at the Conference of Chambers of Commerce of the Empire which was to have been held in October last, but was postponed. Mr. Graham was also a local director of the China Traders' Insurance Company and one of the promoters and a director of the Australasia Sugar Refining Co. Ltd. As stated, our late friend left the colony in March 1891, partly for a well earned holiday and partly owing to the delicate health of Mrs. Graham, and the last mail advices stated that both had greatly benefited by the change ; and they, with practically all mercantile Melbourne, were looking forward to their return home with the keenest pleasure. But it was not to be, that fell scourage, " influenza," sweeping away after a brief struggle, at the age of forty-two, one of the noblest of our race.
    " Heaven gives its favourite early death."
    The deceased gentleman was a brother of Mr. E. W. Graham, manager here of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co's, business.9
