    There was a large and representative gathering at the Dandenong town hall on Wednesday night, when Mr. D. J. Ahern, late head teacher of the Eumemmerring State School, was made the recipient of a presentation on his retirement from the Education Department. Mr M. Macpherson was voted to the chair.
    The chairman, in making the presentation, consisting of a handsome illuminated address and silver tea and coffee service, remarked that he had a very pleasant duty to perform: He had briefly related the steps taken in regard to the affair, and he was glad to state the movement had been carried on smoothly, the subscriptions being handed in spontaneously. He had known Mr Ahern for 17 years, and practically they had taught side by side, the schools not being more than a mile apart. His acquaintance with Mr. Ahern had always been of a most pleasant character, and they had always paid each other those attentions and courtesies which went to make life pleasant. He had always found Mr. Ahern straightforward and conscientious, and in no way inclined to be quarrelsome. The duties of a teacher were onerous and continuously distracting, as he had not only to please one or two persons, but dozens, and a head teacher could not walk life as other men, who were not so closely or jealously watched.
    Like Caesar's wife he must be above suspicion. Mr Ahern deserved every commendation, not only as a public teacher, but as a private citizen, as he had been identified with everything that had for its object the advancement of the district.
    The speaker then read the address, in which Mr Ahern's virtues and accomplishments were extolled at some length, and concluded by expressing the hope that the recipient and his good lady might live long amongst them, and enjoy the well-earned rest and retirement they were justly entitled to after so many years of arduous labor (applause).
    The service bears the following inscription:—"Presented to D.J. Ahern, Esq., by his friends and former pupils, on his retirement from public teaching. Dandenong, March 20, 1895."
    Father Quilter referred to the absence of Father Carey, who had not been sent an invitation card owing to an oversight, but had forwarded a subscription. He (the speaker) need scarcely mention the pleasure it gave him to be present among them. He was once more in their town ship, in the company of friends from whom he had received many kindnesses, but he had come there chiefly to do honor to a gentleman of whose character he had a high appreciation. Mr. Ahern had spent 30 years in their midst as a public servant and he had given ample satisfaction to his superiors, with fidelity to those entrusted to his charge, and with honor to himself. He had known Mr Ahern during the past 18 years, during seven of which he had been intimately acquainted with him; and now after those years certain convictions had forced thelmselves upon his mind—that he was a gentleman of unselfish nature, of kindly feeling to all, a man who was charitable in the true sense of the word, who would not sacrifice principle at any cost, and who by hand, heart and pocket, as far as his means would permit, was ever ready to assist in a praiseworthy work. His nature was reflected in his son, who, he had heard, was rendering assistance to fever stricken persons at Coolgardie. One pleasing feature in the assemblage was the attendance of representatives of different creeds. Mr. Ahern had now retirhd from public service and entered on a well-earned holiday, and he would wish he and his family long life and happiness.
    Mr. E Hanley (Berwick), remarked that he knew Mr. Ahern 30 years ago, and his family had received tuition from him. He was the same man now, only older, and had always merited the goodwill of his neighbors.
    Father Daly referred to Mr Ahern as a frank and sincere man, and not only an earnest friend but useful citizen. Mr Ahern had had an opportunity of becoming popular, being entrusted with the education of youth. He had done his duty concientiously, as poved by the number of his friends, and the appreciation of his worth was shewn in the present occasion. Mr Ahern's services were not only esteemed at day school, but also at the church, where he had proved his sincerity both in religion and friendship. Mr Ahern's was an honest and noble character, and he (the speaker) hoped that he and Mrs. Ahern would have a long and happy life.
    Dr. Moore announced that it had been decided to present Mrs. Ahern with a souvenir (loud applause). He had had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Ahern on many occasions, and had always found her a christian lady.
    Mr McLean said the previous speakers had not left him much to say, except in endorsement of their remarks. One gratifying feature of the testimonial was that there was no seeking for subscriptions, and it was by the merest accident that he knew of it. Unlike many of these proceedings, it was the spontaneous outcome of the goodwill of the people. He had been associated with Mr Ahern in many public matters, in which the beneficiary had always shown integrity and a thorougly sense of duty. He had never tried to assume, and his advice always carried great weight. Therefore he was always looked up to. He concluded by wishing Mr and Mrs Ahern all future happiness.
    Mr McCart had known their guest for 17 years. All his family had been under Mr Ahern's care, and his teaching had given great satisfaction. He had been associated with him in societies, and, looked upon him aa wise and judicious counseller. They hd always agreed and worked harmoniously hand in hand. Mr. Ahern was esteemed in Melbourne as one of the best secretaries of the Hibernian lodge. He was pleased to do honor to Mrs Ahern also; he knew her to be a charitale lady ; in case of sickness her purse was always open, and her left hand never knew what her right hand gave. If ever he had occasion to call upon Mr. Ahern for a subscription he always got it, and he thought it a pity the law made it a crime for a man to become old.
    Mr H. Ross added a few words in support of Mr. Ahern's popularity. Mr Hemmings said he had known Mr. Ahern since he first came to the district, and during the whole of that term had never heard a word against him, but always in his favor, which said a good deal for him. Mr. Ahern had always been very neighborly and he was pleased to see the treatment accorded him, and the handsome present made him.
    Mr. C. H. Dawson observed that after the eulogies passed upon Mr. Ahern there was nothing left for him to say except wish he and hid family long life and happiness.
    Mr Ahern, who spoke feelingly, said that he was in an embarrassed position, inasmuch as he felt incapable of doing justice, in even a slight manner, to the elegant and beautiful presentation made him, and to the complimentary remarks of the gentlemen present, giving him credit for qualities that he did not possess and could lay no claim to. True enough he was an old identity in the district. In 1859 he went to Nar-nar-Goon, where he spent four years; and he had the satisfaction of knowing that he and the people there parted with mutual regret. Though it was many years since he left that place, he retained pleasant relations with his old friends ; whenever he visited Pakenham or Nar-nar-Goon he found those relations still existed, and he always got a cordial welcome. In September, 1863, he was appointed to Eumemmerring. On arriving there he found the attendance of children had dwindled so much that the school had lost the grant from the Education Department. His reputation had proceeded him, for the children came back, and before long he had to apply for increased accommodation. The greater part of his life had been spent in school work, and now, owing to the retrenchment policy, although in full enjoyment of his faculties: it was thought necessary to retire him. He had been compelled to retire, but he did so with the satisfaction of knowing that his long term of service had been appreciated by both parents and children, the latter being sorry to lose their old teacher. He had in his time a good deal to do with the church, and had assisted in building two churches in Dandenong. He had occupied the position of hon. secretary to the church committee for a number of years, and in the dealings with his colleagues he had many reminiscenses of pleasant meetings. The present occasion could not easily he erased from his mind. In other ways, as stated by Fathers Daly and Quilter, he had tried to make himself useful, but he had never experienced such a welcome as he had received that night. He had tried to deserve the confidence and friendship of every parent who sent children to the school. That he felt he always had had, and he was simply repaid in such confidence and friendship. Whilst speaking he wished to mention the press of Dandenong ; in any public movement he had always received a kind and encouraging word from it, and he took the opportunity of thanking the proprietors of the local newspapers for their courtesy. When he knew he had to retire he kept the information secret, for he did not want his friends to know of it. He wanted to do it quietly, being conscious that he did not deserve recognition of his services, and in the present depressed times did not want an appeal to his friends. The latter, how ever, took the matter up, and the demonstration of that night was the result. Anyone could feel proud of it, and the honor done him that night would never be forgotten. The address and service would be highly treasured, and he was grateful to learn that it was the result of voluntary subscriptions. He was proud to the thought worthy of the honor, and the representative character of the committee greatly enhanced the value of the present. He had been 31 years in Eumemmerring, where he had the pleasure of instructing the children of friends until he left the service. He might say that both his wife and family had received respect and kindness from friends in Dandenong and Eumemmerring. He looked upon Eumemmerring as being only second to his home, and he intended to remain for the rest of his natural life, and trusted to maintain the respect of his friends, in the future as in the past. He returned thanks for the handsome and valuable present made him, which he hoped his family would value, not only for its intrinsic merit, but for the sentiments with which it was accompanied. No one could place a higher estimate on the presentation than he did. (Cheers.)
    On the motion of Father Quilter and Mr. E. Hanley, a vote of thanks was passed to the chairman, for which Mr. Macpherson returned thanks.

  • 20 May 1920: MR DANIEL JAMES AHERN
    By the death of Mr D. J. Ahern, which took place at his late residence,"Kia Ora," Cranbourne road, Dandenong, on May 17, the district loses one of its oldest residents, and one who was most highly respected by all sections in the community.
    Up to within two days of his death Mr Ahern was about and well, and, when the end came, he passed away peacefully - "into another and a better world." Deceased was born at Kilgubbinet, County Limerick, Ireland, on February 11, 1835, and, when 21 years of age, left his native home, and came to Melbourne in a sailing ship, the trip occupying four months.
    Shortly after his arrival in the State he engaged as a school teacher at Narnargoon, and in the year 1863, took over control of the Eummerring State school ; at both centres he was acknowledged as a painstaking and careful instructor. In 1895 he retired from the service. It can justly be claimed that Mr Ahern was a useful and respected citizen, who took an active part in local matters of importance. He always took a keen interest in coursing, and at one time kept valuable greyhounds, and took a prominent part in that branch of sport; he was also secretary of the one time Eumemmerring Race club. Friendly society work engaged his attention, and he was the founder and secretary of the local branch H.A.C.B.S; was also a member of the Dandenong Agricultural society, and was one of the local Cemetery trustees. He was a prominent member of the Roman Catholic church, and took an active part in church work. He was a man whose word was his bond, and his many friends throughout the district will retain pleasant recollections of their associations with him. He leaves a widow, three sons and three daughters to mourn their loss, and to them we extend our deepest sympathy in their sad bereavement.
    On Wednesday afternoon a large number attended the funeral, which left his late residence for the Catholic church, and thence to the Dandenong cemetery.
    The funeral cortege included members of the Dandenong branch H.A C B.S, and many friends who had attended from a distance. Rev Father Merner conducted the funeral service, and J W Garnar attended to the mortuary arrangements.1
