  • 18 Jan 1934: In 1858, wheat growing being in full swing, steam thrashing machines travelled from town to town, thrashing out the wheat at the rate of 500 to 1000 bushels a day. Mr. Thomas Eggleston erected a flour mill for grinding wheat at Mr. Inglis', on the west side of the old homestead, for two years. Thence he removed to an allotment in the township of Berwick, and excavated a large water hole to supply water for the steam engine. This did not hold water.
He sold out, leaving the district, as the farmers had given up growing wheat here-the price having dropped from 20/ to 10/ per bushel-and had gone in for dairying and cheese making. The wheat that took the first prize at the Paris Exhibition about this period was grown here.13

  • 16 Sep 1890: DEATH OF MR. PATRICK HANNA.
We (Argus) have to announce the death of Mr Patrick Hanna, ex-M.L.C., which took place on Friday morning. Mr Hanna was born in Killinegan, County Down, Ireland, on June 24, 1819. He left his native country in 1835, to learn the trade of an engineer, and he was variously employed at the works of George Stevenson and Son, Newcastle-on-Tyne ; Charles Wood, Dumbarton ; and Hood, Rowan, and Co., Kelvinhaugh, Glasgow, shipbuilders. He emigrated to Melbourne in the ship Abdallah, in 1853, and among his shipmates were Mr Service, M.L.C., Mr Nimmo, M.L.A., and other well-known colonists. He established a ferry boat on the Yarra at the foot of King Street. Subsequently he became lessee of all the toll-gates on the Sydney-road, and he also built the bridge over the Goulburn at Seymour. In 1863 he made an essay to enter Parliamentary, life when he opposed the late Mr J. D. Pinnook for the Eastern Province, and was defeated by one vote. In 1866 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly for the Murray Boroughs in opposition to Sir Graham Berry, and he held the seat until 1877, in which year the electorate was divided. He was a candidate for the new district of Moira, but was defeated by Mr Orr and Mr Sharpe. In 1882 when the first elections for the Legislative Council under the new constitution took place, Mr Hanna was elected for the North-Eastern Province, which he represented until recently, when ill-health compelled him to resign.14
