  • 9 Nov 1887: CHURCH OF CHRIST BERWICK.
The annual Tea and Public meeting in connection with the above church took place on "Cup night," in the Rechabite Hall, and was a splendid success, there being between three and four hundred people present. The tables were beautifully decorated with flowers and loaded with viands of the choicest quality, to which it is needless to add that ample justice was done the good things provided by caterer Swallow, of Berwick. Mr. Macallister's ubiquitiousness was remarkably pro-emenient—he being in all parts of the spacious building almost simultaneously—looking after the comfort and welfare of everyone, and we were well pleased to see that his efforts to make everybody happy was palpably apparant by the smiling faces and condign expressions of contentment with which he was greeted on all aides. There was none of the mamby pamby mincing humbug, which generally prevails at such entertainments, but a good sound health restoring meal, manipulated by the deft fingers of fair maids whose cheeks resembled the lily white with tints of hygeans bright hue. This Tea and public meeting has become an annual institution, and is looked forward to by a great many as a day of recreation and enjoyment. We noticed familiar faces from Prahran, Gembrook, South Yarra, Carlton, Collingwood, Bunyip, Beaconsfield, Narree Warren, &c., all congregating together in one Fraternity, and to all appearance joyous, and happy; having cast off the restrictions which trammel natures healthy exurbence, and seeming, as it were, to have forgotten the monotonous drudgeries of every day life, and one and all reiterating the same expression, that they had all come out for a holiday and meant to enjoy themselves. The following ladies attended at the table; Mrs. Macallister, Miss Sarah Jane Funston, Miss Mary-anne Funston, Misses Moysey, Misses Jakel, Misses Johns, Miss Fleur, Miss Ritche and Miss Brigwell. It took three sittings and a half before the appetites of all we satisfied, and this was eventually done, there being plenty and a lot left. Over the platform were the words "Stand complete in the ways of the Lord," tastefully worked in a scarlet cloth and coral fern. After the tables had been cleared away, the hall was again filled to its utmost capacity, with a large and appreciative audience, many who had the misfortune not to obtain an ingress to the building were obliged to be content with remaining outside. The choir, which was from Prahran and under the conductorship of Mr. Bangs, contributed some splendid selections during the meeting. The chair was occupied by Brother Cameron, and addresses were delivered bythe following Gentlemen:—Brothera Clapham, Fitzroy, Brockway, Hawthorn; Henselwood; Swanston street; Hilliar, Garield; Moysey, South Melbourne; and Dr. Porter.

  • 1 Jun 1933: BERWICK. Great regret was felt when it became known that Mr. John James Funston had passed Wednesday morning, May 24. The illness was of short duration, but an attack of pleurisy and bronchitis the previous week was followed by pneumonia, with fatal results. Deceased was a highly respected resident of Berwick, and was a native of the district. For many years he had been a member of the Berwick State School Committee, and had taken a great interest in the school, of which he had also been a scholar. He was an active member of the local Rechabite Tent, and an adherent of the Church of Christ. A widow, three sons and two daughters are left to mourn their loss, and to them is extended deepest sympathy. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon at the Berwick cemetery, when there was a large congregation to pay their last tribute to the deceased.11
  • 7 Mar 2018: Funston a fine figure
    Funston Street, Berwick
This street was named in 1972 after Allan Funston a long-time Berwick resident who contributed much to public life in the district.
Allan's grandfather James Funston came to live in Berwick in the 1860s, and now four generations have made their home in the township.
James was born in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1832, emigrating to Australia in his mid-20s.
James, with sons Thomas and John (Jack), farmed three properties - 285 acres (115 hectares) between the Beaconsfield Railway Station and Pink Hill, an area between Manuka Road and the Cardinia Creek in Berwick, and the dairy farm "Sunny Brae" on the south-east comer of Lyall and Inglis Roads.
In 1890 James established a boarding house in Peel Street Berwick halfway up the hill from Lyall Road towards Rutland Road. He quickly became involved in the local community becoming a Trust Member of the Berwick Cemetery and a Deacon at the Berwick Church of Christ.
James and his wife Jane produced nine children. Their son John James (Jack), born in Berwick in 1874, and his wife Edith managed the dairy farm "Sunny Brae".
Following Jack's early death, his son Allan, who had been born in the house on the property in Lyall Road, and then nine years old, assisted his mother with the dairy prior to taking on its management after leaving Dandenong High School at the age of 16 years.
Twice a day Allan milked the cows and each morning and evening delivered milk to Berwick and Beaconsfield in a horse and cart, and later, using a Vanguard utility which then made deliveries to Officer possible.
Allan ceased farming with the dairy cows and then sourced milk from the farmer across the road (Inglis Road) Bill Gamble, who farmed the "Burnbank" property located between Beaumont and Buchanan roads.
The dairy was later sold to Associated Dairies for whom Allan continued to work. The company established a dairy in Neill Street Berwick on the north-east corner of Turner Street, and innovative for the times, introduced an electric powered tray truck.
Allan Funston served the local community in a wide range of positions including 25 years as secretary of the Berwick Church of Christ, 36 years as secretary of the Berwick Cemetery Trust, and was an active member and club champion at the Berwick Bowling Club, and a member of the Rotary Club of Berwick for 26 years (president 1967/68).
The centenary celebrations of the Shire of Berwick in 1968 saw Shire President Allan and his wife Betty sitting with Lord and Lady Casey in front of the Old Berwick Post Office observing the large street parade organised for the occasion.
Also named after Allan is the new rotunda at the Berwick Cemetery, a project jointly undertaken by the Rotary Club of Berwick and the Berwick and Harkaway Cemetery Trust, and a court in Pakenham - Funston Court. Allan James Funston12

A cluster of orange blossom decorated the neckline of the robe, and the veil of magnolia tulle was held in place with a twist of the bride's hair, entwined with pearls. The bride was given away by her mother and the only bridesmaid was Miss Evelyn Joan Simpson who wore a frock of mauve georgette cut on Grecian lines. • 28 Apr 1915: It is with regret that we have to record the death of Miss Funston, daughter of Mrs Funston, of Peel street, which took place on Saturday last. The deceased lady had been ailing for many years but her death was unexpected and came as a shock to her relatives and friends. She was in her usual state of health on Friday evening, but, about midnight, she complained of illness and medical aid was obtained. Death resulted from heart failure. She was well known throughout the district and will be sadly missed by a large circle of friends. Her remains were interred in the local cemetery on Sunday afternoon, when many attended at the graveside to pay a last tribute of respect to her memory, An impressive service was conducted by Mr Pittman, of the Church of Christ. Deceased was a sister of Mrs J. Richardson, Narre Warren; Mrs Hunter, Clyde ; Mrs Pittman, Ascot Vale; Mrs J. Anderson, Oakleigh ; Mr J. Funston, Berwick ; and Mr G. Funston, Dandenong. Deep sympathy is felt for the bereaved relatives in their sad trouble.5
