The marriage of Lieutenant Alex. H. Miller A.I.F., youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Miller, The Pines, Berwick (formerly on the staff of the Beechworth Higher Elementary School) to Isabelle (Belle) younger daughter of the Hon. A. A Billson and Mrs. BilIson, "Lauraige", The Avenue, East Malvern, was quietly celebrated by the Rev. H. B. Hewett at St. John's Church
East Malvern, on March 25. Only, immediate relatives were present. Miss Breen played wedding marches and other selections on the organ. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a coat and skirt of ivory gabardine and a blouse of ivory ninon, hat of ivory panre velvet trimmed with skunk fur and a single pink rose. She carried a bouquet of pale pink roses tinted leaves, and fine fern, with long ends of palest pink tulle and wore the bridegroom's gift - a brooch set with diamonds and pearls. After the ceremony the guests were entertained at afternoon tea at "Lauraige." The dining room in which tea was served, was decorated with pink and white roses, cactus dahlias and numerous little silken flags. The honeymoon is being spent at Mount Martha. The bride's travelling dress was of nigger brown cashmere de soie, the little sleeveless coatee being worn over a dainty blouse of ninon and Malines lace, and fastened at the waist with an antique brooch formerly belonging to the bride's grandmother, and presented to her by her aunt, Mrs. J. Collier, of Elsternwick. Her hat, of drawn nigger brown silk, was trimmed with a spray of geranium pink velvet roses. She carried a large posy of violets and a silver bag, the gift of her mother. Newspaper-Articles

  • 10 Feb 1911: OBITUARY. JAMES CRESCENT STEEL, J.P.
ONE who was identified with the municipal and industrial history of North Melbourne for many years, passed away at his residence, Macaulay-rd., on the 3rd inst., in the late ex-Cr. J. C. Steel, J.P. He came to Victoria after a seafaring life, in connection with which he could relate many interesting incidents; and founded an extensive tannery business, having manufactories at North Melbourne—next his private residence—and one in Sydney, together with a depot for hides, skins, etc., in Spencer-st. Mr. Steel was for many years a member of the Western Ward in the North Melbourne Council, and as a member of the Finance Committee of that body gave the benefit of his business aptitude and ability to the ratepayers.
Older residents will remember that the western ward with its vacant land, in respect to which it was often a Herculean task to get the rates owing, on it, and its drainage difficulties, was a source of constant anxiety to the local council.
Cr Steel often confessed that he did not see at all a plain way out of the wood regarding this portion of the town, and placed the cost of putting it in proper condition at quite £18,000. He was mayor of the town about 1885, and dispensed the hospitality and social functions incidental to the office with no niggard hand. Mr. Steel was also a justice of the peace, and although he did not sit as often as some justices, his presence on the bench was always a source of pleasure to his colleagues.
At one time the deceased was a wealthy man, and had a beautiful residence at Healesville. On the walls of this house were some very valuable oil paintings, the work of the best British artists, while the land round it comprised some of the best in the district. Mr. Steel was intimate with a large circle of city business men, and the "cronies" of his matured manhood numbered some of the best known public, official, and commercial characters in Melbourne. Almost thirteen years ago the large tannery in Macaulay-rd. took fire early one hot wind January evening, and by daybreak only portions of the brick work remained.
The present State Treasurer (Hon. W. A. Watt), was at one time a clerk in Mr. Steel's office in Macauilay-rd., but soon became his employer's right hand man, and we are sure none read the news of the demise of Mr. Steel in last Saturday morning's papers with greater regret than he. At the time of his death, Mr. Steel was in his 78th year, but for considerable period before the end came suffered from very poor health, and retired from business.
Deceased was a widower, and leaves a grown up family. The funeral, which was of a strictly private character, took place on Sunday last, the remains being interred in the Church of England Compartment of the Melbourne General Cemetery. The Rev. W. H.. Lane officiated at the grave, and among the mourners were the Hon. W. A. Watt.
Joseph Allison had charge of the funeral arrangements.8
