  • 6 Aug 1898: Mr. Alfred Sikes, too, crossed the Straits; had more ready money than all the others put together; and had a big interest in the district for a long time. Mr. Sikes' services were much sought after as a land surveyor. He surveyed part of that ugly named parish Cut paw-paw for the Government, and purchased an estate there for himself, at the Government auction sale. I'll refer to Sikes' history some other time, which should interest many.23

  • 20 Mar 1920: Mr George Sweet, of Brunswick, who died on March 14, at the age of 74, had lived in Victoria for 52 years. He was chairman of the Pottery Manufacturers' Association, and representative of the employers on the Pottery Wages Board. A prominent Methodist, he was a member of the Council of Churches since its inception. He took an interest in geology, and was a member of the Royal Society and Field Naturalists' Club.8

    Mr George Sweet, who passed away peacefully at his home, The Close, Wilson st., Brunswick, on Sunday, March, 14th, has a unique record. Being rightly termed a man of many parts, he was successful in numbers of vocations. He was a resident of Brunswick since 1873, and had a wonderful memory, which he retained to his last.
    Born at Salisbury, Wiltshire, England in 1844, he became a member of the Temperance Society at the early age of nine years, a pledge he kept truthfully all his life. As a lay preacher in 1859 he occupied the pulpit in the Primitive Metholdist Church.
    He married Fanny Andover in 1866 at Han..shire, England, and after a brief stay in London sailed for Queensland. The stay wasn't long as in the following year he arrived in Victoria and went to Ballarat. In 1873 he came to Brunswick and commenced business as a general contractor, a trade which he had through knowledge, having been associated with his father in the building line in England. He was successful in his enterprise, and in 1874 he paid a visit to his relatives and friends in England and America. On the following year he again came to Brunswick and carried out large and extensive works until 1885, when he retired. He then interested himself in various societies, especially geology — a study that he had taken a keen liking to from boyhood.
    Mr Sweet became a member of the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria, and a member of the Royal Humane Society of Victoria in 1887, and in the following year was appointed by Sir Krt-d.Tiik M<<*<>y. director of the Natural Museum, to help in elucidating ... geology of the district of Mansfield in Victoria, where he spent considerable time and energy and personal .....TiAan> in doing. In recognition of his work he was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of London ... For about a year he travelled with his family in Queensland, N.S. W., Victoria, and Tasmania, and then returning to his home in Brunswick after visiting New Zealand.
    During his treavels in North Central Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania, and New Zealand, he made ?? investigations, obtain ?? specimens of considerable value, which enrich our public Museums, at the present time.
    ?? he became interested in the geological deposits of Bacchus Marsh and other districts, working at them in ??ii-nipan with Mr Littlebrank.

    His daughter, Dr Georgina Sweet, has been called upon in a short period of 16 months to part with her mother, her sister (Dr. Elisabeth, Sweet), and now her father. We offer her our deepest sympathy in her great bereavement.9

  • 19 Jul 1943: OBITUARY Mr. J. T. Tweddle
    Mr. Joseph Thornton Tweddle died in a private hospital in Melbourne on Friday last, at the age
    of 78 years. He was born at Winlaton, County Durham, England, in 1865, and after business experience in Newcastle (England) joined the firm of Andrews Bros. Pty. Ltd., warehousemen, Flinders-lane, as an accountant in 1896. He became managing director in 1915 and chairman of directors in 1933. He was the founder of Tweddle Baby Hospital and the School of Mothercraft, Footscray, and presented the institutions to the State. He was a trustee of the National Gallery and a member of the council of Wesley College. The remains were privately cremated on Saturday after a service conducted by Rev. H. A. Overend. The funeral arrangements were carried out by A. A. Sleight Pty. Ltd.10
  • 19 Jul 1943: Train Talk Recalled
    A chance meeting with two doctors in a railway carriage about 25 years ago and a discussion on the need for an infant training school for nurses, led to the establishment of one of Melbourne's most valuable institutions.
    The medical men were Drs. J. W. Springthorpe and Allen Robertson, and their talk was with Mr Joseph Thornton Tweddle, who died in a private hospital on Friday, aged 78.
    The doctors, alarmed at the time by an increasing infant mortality in Victoria, mentioned their idea of a nurses' training school to Mr Tweddle, and his immediate response was: "You can have my home at Berwick."
    He heard no more about the project because the doctors went off to New Zealand to investigate Dr. (afterwards Sir) Truby King's highly successful methods in combating infant mortality, and in the meantime a buyer came and bought Mr Tweddle's blood stock farm at Berwick. A week later Dr. Springthorpe walked in to his office.
    Footscray Chosen
    As soon as he saw Dr. Springthorpe, Mr Tweddle exclaimed, Berwick, but you can have the money to build your training centre wherever you like." And so it was built, the Tweddle Baby Hospital and Mothercraft School at Footscray, because it was an industrial centre and because it was sadly wanted there.
    Mr Tweddle leaves a widow, a son, Pilot Officer Angus Tweddle, and two daughters, Mrs J. McKay and Miss Betty Tweddle.11
  • 20 Jul 1943: OBITUARY MR J. T. TWEDDLE
    Mr. Joseph Thornton Tweddle, FFIA, whose death occurred in a private hospital on Friday, and founder and proprietor of the famous “Winlaton” property at Shepparton, was one of the best known figures in business, pastoral, and art circles in Melbourne.
    Born in England 78 years ago, he came to Australia and joined the firm of Andrews Bros. Pty. Ltd., Melbourne, as accountant, and became a director 8 years later. In 1915 he was managing director, and chairman of directors in 1933, a position he held at the time of his death. Soon after his arrival in Australia in association with Mr Henry Angus, he took up suitable areas of grazing land in northern Victoria, and in later years also had other properties in various parts of the State. He became well known as a breeder of outstanding stud stock.
    The late Mr Tweddle sponsored the erection of Tweddle Baby Hospital and school of mothercraft at Footscray. He was a member of the council of Wesley College and a former chairman of Queen’s College Council.
    He was a member of the National Gallery Trustees and was an enthusiastic collector of all objects of art.
    He was a member of the Victorian directorate of the Union Assurance Society Ltd.
    He is survived by his widow, one son, who is a member of the RAAF, and two daughters.
    After a service at Sleight's chapel, St. Kilda road, conducted by Rev. A. H. Overend, the funeral, which was private, took place at Springvale Crematorium on Saturday.12

  • 17 Jul 1880: Ernest Gierisch, farmer, of Huntly, on Thursday evening met with a shocking accident, resulting in his death. It seems that Mr Gierisch was driving towards his home when the vehicle capsize, and he fell under it, being crushed to death. The unfortunate man was only fifty-two years of age, and he was highly respected by his neighbours and by all acquainted with him.4

  • 21 Mar 1888: IN the SUPREME COURT of the COLONY of VICTORIA in its Probate Jurisdiction.—In the Will of JOSEPH WALSDORF, Late of Berwick, in the Colony of Victoria, Farmer, Deceased. - Notice is hereby given, that after the expiration of fourteen days from the publication hereof application will be made to the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria, in the Probate Jurisdiction, that PROBATE of the LAST WILL of Joseph Walsdorf, late of Berwick, in the colony of Victoria, farmer, deceased, may be granted to Jacob Hessel, of Erica street, East Prahran, in the said colony, schoolmaster, one of the executors appointed by the said will of the said deceased, reserving leave to Franz Schmitt, the elder, of Berwick aforesaid, farmer, to come in and prove the said will.
    Dated this twentieth day of March, 1888.
