Newspaper-Articles

  • 24 Sep 1932: Death of mother: OBITUARY. MRS. RUPERT SELMAN
As the result of a sudden illness while engaged at her domestic duties some weeks back, Mrs Rupert Selman passed away at her home, Upper Fern Tree Gully, on Wednesday September 14.
The deceased lady, who was prior to her marriage Miss Eloner Mary Forsyth Bell of Flemington, had enjoyed normal health, and her sudden illness, which was at once diagnosed as of a most serious character, came as a shock to members of her family and frieds, all of whom deeply regret her early death.
Following a short service at her late home, her remains were reerently laid to rest in the Box Hill cemetery on Thursday in the presence of a large assemblage of family and friends. The Rev C. H. Clark officiated at the graveside and in the home. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of A. ? and Co.
To Mr. Selman and the young family Jean, Alex, and Mary, there is ? an expression of deep sympathy in their hours of sorrow and bereavement.3
  • 9 Apr 1986: C.W.A. pays tribute to Jean Baker
Members of the Upper Beaconsfield and Woorinyan Branches of the Country Womens' Association will sadly miss the late Mrs Jean Baker who passed away at the Dandenong Hospital after a short illness.
An enthusiastic member of C.W.A. herself Jean served a term as Group President of the West Gippsland Group in 1982-83.
It was in this role particularly that she showed her loving, caring concern for others. Following the Ash Wednesday fires she was quickly on the scene recording the names of all members in need of help, and she worked tirelessly thereafter to see that it was received.
Through her representation on State Council she saw that lost badges were replaced free of charge, sewing aids and craft materials and patterns were provided and members needs were met more readily by the generosity of other branches.
Many families in this district received fresh vegetables, eggs, processed chickens, jams or cooking because of her thoughtfulness and willingness to step in and help.
She chaired many extra meetings which resulted in continued help and support for the community for many months after.
And so it is with love and gratitude that local C.W.A. members record their appreciation of having had the priviledge of knowing such a friend to them all as the late Jean Baker.4
