  • 27 Jan 1928: YOUTHFUL THIEVES. Stole Money and Sweets.
    In Oakleigh court yesterday, Frank Higgins, 19 years, of Cromwell-street, Caulfield, and Joseph Bell, 17 years, of Wattle Tree-road, Malvern, were charged with having stolen £3 and a jar of "snowballs." valued at 4/. the property of G. Lothian, confectioner, Poath-road, Hughesdale.
    Greta Binding, shop assistant, employed by Mr. Lothian, said that about 10 p.m. on 7th inst. the accused came into the shop and asked for a candle, as they had no light for a cart they were driving. She went into the residential portion of the premises to get one, and after accused left she missed three £1 notes from the till and a jar of "snowballs" from the counter.
    Richard Ellis, of Harrison-street, Malvern, said that at the invitntion of accused, he went for a drive with them. While they went into the shop in Poath-road he remained in the cart. Bell ran out of the shop with a jar of "snowballs," which he put in the cart. He did not know anything about money having been stolen, but he knew Bell had taken the "snowballs."
    Constable Dodemaide of Malvern, produced statements by accused, and Bell in his statement said that he took the "snowballs" and Higgins the money. Higgins in his statement said that Bell had taken both the money and the sweets.
    Mr. Corr, in making an appeal for leniency, said that Bell had asked him to tell the court that Higgins's statement to the police was correct. Restitution would be made to the shopkeeper.
    Accused were sentenced to two months' imprisonment, but the sentences were suspended on the usual first offender conditions.5

The accident occurred after five o'clock on Thursday, last week.

  • 7 Feb 1990: The carved a new life in a fledgling colony
    On 1 November, 1855 Captain Mcintosh brought the "Oriental" safely into Port Adelaide.
    The colony of South Australia had been founded in 1836 on the principle of free settlers and the "Oriental" had sailed in lone? from Southampton with 261 assisted immigrants for the colony.
    On board were Patrick and Alice McMullen and their infant son, Robert.
    Patrick, a carpenter by trade, was from Cookstown in County Tyrone. He had grown up on the farm of his parents, Patrick McMullen and Susan Mullins.
    Alice, the daughter of William Mooney and Elizabeth McKernan and also from farming background, was from the village of Moveagh near Cookstown, they had
    married on 27 January, 1831 in Cookstown. When they set out for Australia Patrick was 21 years old, his wife 21 years old, and Robert a baby of a few months.
    Their first years in Australia were spent in Adelaide, where Patrick's skills as a carpenter would have been in demand. In this period, their second child, Peter, was still-born but then their family was extended by the arrival of Mary Jane in 1858 and Elizabeth Teresa in 1859.
    For Elizabeth's birth Alice stayed with relatives on Mooney Station in New South Wales.
    In 1863 Patrick began purchasing land at Berwick, obtaining during 1863-64 three blocks extending along Inglis Road, from Buchanan's Road to the Cardinia Creek. By March, 1864, they were living in Berwick.
    In February, en route, their fifth child, Susana had been born at Wyndham, the former name of Werribee.
    Patrick built a house bordering on Buchanan's Road opposite the Berwick cemetery and utilised his land for grazing cattle. The children, including those born at Berwick, Patrick in 1865, Margaret in 1867, a second Peter in 1870 and Rosanna in 1872 attended the Berwick State School.
    Two tragedies struck the family in this period. Then first wooden home was destroyed by fire. They chose to build again on another site on Inglis Road. This second dwelling, which is still standing, is now the home of Norm and Betty Kirkham.
    In 1879, Elizabeth died of typhoid fever and was one of the first people to be buried in the Berwick cemetery. The witnesses to her burial were two of the pioneers of the district, Robert Officer and Ralph Brunt. Her father made a wooden coffin, carved a wooden "headstone" and made a picket fence to surround her grave.
    In 1871 Patrick applied under the Land Act for a selection of 147 acres of grazing land at Officer and the lease was granted. The property between the
    Princes Highway and Browns Road and east of what is now McMullen Road had a four room dwelling of wattle daub. 18 feet by 15 feet, with a shingle roof. Members of the family resided there while the main family home remained at Berwick. On 1 January, 1876 Patrick also leased 99 acres at Gembrook under license for potatoes.
    A leasehold to freehold application for the property at Officer was granted in 1885 but the family continued to he based at Berwick until the mid-1890s, when their property at Berwick, except for a block in the Main Street, was sold.
    Patrick and Alice now resided at Officer; they named the property "Glenglass", gaelic for "Green Valley" and were able to extend it by 47 acres to the west of McMullen Road.
    Alice had a lucky escape, when they were blasting for a well near their house. A boulder went hurtling through the air and through the roof of their house narrowly missing its mistress.
    The children were now grown and had started to make their own lives.
    Robert was with the railways and after several years in Broken Hill settled with his family in Richmond. Mary Jane married Richard Backous in Benalla. Susana went to work in Melbourne. Patrick jnr. learnt his father's trade of carpentry.
    This took him to New Zealand, where he met his bride, but they then returned to reside in Melbourne. Margaret and Rose remained at Officer, where Rose married Alfred Saunders, who was employed by her parents.
    Peter went bridge building in Western Australia and then worked on stations in New South Wales and Victoria.
    Patrick died on 3 February, 1909 at 79 years of age. Alice with Margaret, Rose and her husband continued to run the farm until Alice's death on 13 June, 1920. The "South Bourke and Mornington Journal" of Thursday July 1, 1920 recorded the following:
    "It is with regret we have to announce the death of Mrs McMullen of "Glenglass", Officer. The deceased lady was a colonist of 64 years, she was born in Cookstown, County Tyron(e), Ireland, and had reached the ripe old age of 87 years.     One of her treasured possessions, her filly Polly, was left to the granddaughter, who resided at Officer with her, Rose Alice Saunders.
    Margaret and Rose and Alfred Saunders now went to live at Beaconsfield.
    Peter, who in 1911 had married Agnes Murray, a teacher relieving at Officer State School, returned with his family to take over the farm. Other property
    at Officer and a small farm in the village on Rockhead, near Cookstown in Ireland, were inherited by Patrick jnr. Robert received two allotments in Newport and Margaret the half acre in High Street, Berwick. As in many families, the contents of the will caused some family friction.
    Peter maintained a dairy herd at "Glen Glas" as the property name eventually became. With the other local farmers he delivered his milk each day to the Officer Railway Station. He sold several acres on the corner of the Princes Highway and Starling Road to the local community to enable the establishment of the Officer Sports Ground.
    When his son, also Peter, took over the farm, he converted to sheep farming, with which he continued into the 1960s. He and his wife, Pauline, still live at Officer on part of his grandfather's property. The name of "Glen Glas" remains as a reminder of and a tribute to the original Irish settlers.

  • 7 Feb 1990: The carved a new life in a fledgling colony
    On 1 November, 1855 Captain Mcintosh brought the "Oriental" safely into Port Adelaide.
    The colony of South Australia had been founded in 1836 on the principle of free settlers and the "Oriental" had sailed in lone? from Southampton with 261 assisted immigrants for the colony.
    On board were Patrick and Alice McMullen and their infant son, Robert.
    Patrick, a carpenter by trade, was from Cookstown in County Tyrone. He had grown up on the farm of his parents, Patrick McMullen and Susan Mullins.
    Alice, the daughter of William Mooney and Elizabeth McKernan and also from farming background, was from the village of Moveagh near Cookstown, they had
    married on 27 January, 1831 in Cookstown. When they set out for Australia Patrick was 21 years old, his wife 21 years old, and Robert a baby of a few months.
    Their first years in Australia were spent in Adelaide, where Patrick's skills as a carpenter would have been in demand. In this period, their second child, Peter, was still-born but then their family was extended by the arrival of Mary Jane in 1858 and Elizabeth Teresa in 1859.
    For Elizabeth's birth Alice stayed with relatives on Mooney Station in New South Wales.
    In 1863 Patrick began purchasing land at Berwick, obtaining during 1863-64 three blocks extending along Inglis Road, from Buchanan's Road to the Cardinia Creek. By March, 1864, they were living in Berwick.
    In February, en route, their fifth child, Susana had been born at Wyndham, the former name of Werribee.
    Patrick built a house bordering on Buchanan's Road opposite the Berwick cemetery and utilised his land for grazing cattle. The children, including those born at Berwick, Patrick in 1865, Margaret in 1867, a second Peter in 1870 and Rosanna in 1872 attended the Berwick State School.
    Two tragedies struck the family in this period. Then first wooden home was destroyed by fire. They chose to build again on another site on Inglis Road. This second dwelling, which is still standing, is now the home of Norm and Betty Kirkham.
    In 1879, Elizabeth died of typhoid fever and was one of the first people to be buried in the Berwick cemetery. The witnesses to her burial were two of the pioneers of the district, Robert Officer and Ralph Brunt. Her father made a wooden coffin, carved a wooden "headstone" and made a picket fence to surround her grave.
    In 1871 Patrick applied under the Land Act for a selection of 147 acres of grazing land at Officer and the lease was granted. The property between the
    Princes Highway and Browns Road and east of what is now McMullen Road had a four room dwelling of wattle daub. 18 feet by 15 feet, with a shingle roof. Members of the family resided there while the main family home remained at Berwick. On 1 January, 1876 Patrick also leased 99 acres at Gembrook under license for potatoes.
    A leasehold to freehold application for the property at Officer was granted in 1885 but the family continued to he based at Berwick until the mid-1890s, when their property at Berwick, except for a block in the Main Street, was sold.
    Patrick and Alice now resided at Officer; they named the property "Glenglass", gaelic for "Green Valley" and were able to extend it by 47 acres to the west of McMullen Road.
    Alice had a lucky escape, when they were blasting for a well near their house. A boulder went hurtling through the air and through the roof of their house narrowly missing its mistress.
    The children were now grown and had started to make their own lives.
    Robert was with the railways and after several years in Broken Hill settled with his family in Richmond. Mary Jane married Richard Backous in Benalla. Susana went to work in Melbourne. Patrick jnr. learnt his father's trade of carpentry.
    This took him to New Zealand, where he met his bride, but they then returned to reside in Melbourne. Margaret and Rose remained at Officer, where Rose married Alfred Saunders, who was employed by her parents.
    Peter went bridge building in Western Australia and then worked on stations in New South Wales and Victoria.
    Patrick died on 3 February, 1909 at 79 years of age. Alice with Margaret, Rose and her husband continued to run the farm until Alice's death on 13 June, 1920. The "South Bourke and Mornington Journal" of Thursday July 1, 1920 recorded the following:
    "It is with regret we have to announce the death of Mrs McMullen of "Glenglass", Officer. The deceased lady was a colonist of 64 years, she was born in Cookstown, County Tyron(e), Ireland, and had reached the ripe old age of 87 years.     Dear Aunt Patsy.—This is the first time I have written to you. I am 12 years old, and am in the seventh grade at school. I go to the State school here, as there is no other to go to. I have four brothers and four sisters: their names are Jack, May, Chrissie, Mick, Norman, Nellie, Harold, and Patricia. Patricia is the baby; she is four months old. We call her "Patsy." Beaconsfield is surrounded by bush and hills. There is a creek running through here, too; it is called the Cardinia Creek. Many people come up here from Melbourne on a Sunday to get gum leaves, heath and other wild flowers which grow in the bush, to take home with them. We have to go up to Berwick to Mass, about two miles. The church is on top of a big hill, so that seems to make the walk longer. My brother Jack works at the Wonthaggi railway station as a lad porter; he is 15 years old. As there is no more news, I must close.   • 20 Sep 1923: IN THE BUSH OF BEACONSFIELD. Beaconsfield, Sept. 6th, 1923.
    Dear Aunt Patsy,—I am going to try for the letter-writing competition for this month. I was glad to see my last letter in print, so I thought I would write again. Beaconsfield is not a big place. There are two stores, one hotel, one butcher's, one baker's, and one blacksmith's, two fruit and lolly shops, and a post office. There is also a Foundling Hospital. Sometimes there are as many as sixty babies there, and there is a convent rest-home belonging to St. Vincent's Hospital. Many Sisters come at different times for a breath of fresh country air after the hospital nursing, and there are also some teaching Sisters at holiday times. My two sisters, a nurse from the Foundling Hospital, and myself often go out in the bush on Sunday afternoons and get armfuls of lovely heath, gum leaves, and coral ferns. The bush is lovely just now. We are practising for a concert at our school now, and the proceeds will go towards funds for a ward for the children at the Warragul Hospital.
    As it is getting late, I will close.
