Newspaper-Articles

  • 3 Jul 1935: WOMEN LIFT-DRIVERS "Should Have Something Better to Do" Dr. Gerald Weigall's Views MELBOURNE, July 3.
"Attractive women lift-drivers, aged between 20 and 23 years, should have something better to do than 'push' lifts," Dr. Gerald Weigall (chairman of the Brotherhood of St. Laurence) declared, in deploring the actions of employers who in those days advertise for women to take jobs in which men could be given work. Dr. Weigall said that the girls spent the money thus earned on face paint when it should be "keeping the wolf from the door." "Only the other day I found seven vacant positions advertised for women," he said. As some of them were for hairdressing and the like I could not object, but the seventh was in search of an attractive young lady, between 20 and 23 years of age, to drive a lift for a city firm. That is a position which would "keep the wolf away from the door" of some unfortunate family if it were to a father, but, more's the pity, such money goes for face paint instead."7
