Note* Harriet Rowell Elphinstone Dick. Miss Annie SEELEY was a storekeeper at the McBride Road site from 14 Apr 1886 to 8 October 1887, when she sold the land to Ann Fraser, widow, Beaconsfield. Annie Seeley bought the land from Mrs Craik.
An Annie SEELEY, spinster of Highett, witnessed the will of Miss Harriet Elizabeth ROWELL, also of Highett, on 23 Feb 1900. Annie is still alive when the probate is executed on 5 Aug 1902.
As they were both residents of UB in the 1880s this may be the same Annie SEELEY.

  • 20 Oct 1886: Passing from the hall a little further on the left is the Beaconsfield store—a long stably looking building with the post and telegraph department in one end of it. There must be a remunerative spec. anticipated to accrue from the occupants of the back premises. Horses may here be seen some peering out of their boxes, others dotted through the enclosure in process of being fed, ostlerised, washed, &c., and a large building in course of erection further back is, I presume, to accommodate them.
    The noise of swine and young pigs attack the ear and can be heard above the concomitent din of the locality. You are cautioned by a written notice to keep outside the rails except on business. Probably the owner intended breeding superior draught or race horses and high class swine, and does not wish the modus operandi of cooking these animals to be copied.16

  • 22 Jun 1887: A serious accident occurred at Berwick last week to Mrs. Geo. Craik, who has resided in that township for many years. It would appear from information received that Mrs. Craik was in the act of collecting some wood when she slipped and falling on her leg she broke it just above the ankle. The unfortunate sufferer was attended to by Dr. Elmes, who carefully set the leg again, and under his care is progressing favorably towards convalescence. It is strange to relate that only a few months ago Mrs. Craik had her arm broken under somewhat similar circumstances. The poor creature being about seventy years of age, great doubt exists as to whether she will again properly recover the use of her limbs.8

The sudden death on Saturday, 14th March, of Mrs. Terry Milligan shocked her many friends in Upper Beaconsfield. Terry was a much loved member of the community and was very involved in community life.
She was a valued member of the Upper Beaconsfield C.W.A., the Upper Beaconsfield Rural Fire Brigade and the Brigade Auxiliary and has served as Treasurer for some years in each of these organisations. Terry was also involved in the Pakenham Historical Society and the Upper Beaconsfield Association.
The huge contribution made to the life of the village by John and Terry was recognised in the 1980 'Citizen of the Year' award.
A guard of honour was mounted by the Brigade members and members of the Auxiliary to pay tribute at the well-attended funeral service held at St. John's Church on 18th March.14

Village BellFeb 1996 Some Thoughts and Thanks to John and Terry Milligan
John Milligan's very gracious letter of thanks in the last Village Bell, caused many of us to reflect on the extent of John and Terry's twenty years of service to the Upper Beaconsfield community. The following is an outline of their contributions and why they are held in such high regard.
John and Terry arrived in Australia in 1953. John, a very experienced and able automotive engineer had come to join the management of Lucas Industries Aust.
In 1958 they bought a 30 acre property in Hughenden Road intending to retire here. Deciding to farm the property, they worked hard sowing their five paddocks to pasture for fattening beef cattle. John admits he is no farmer, but thanks to help they received from local people, they were successful.
When John retired from Lucas in 1974, he had a hip joint replacement. The following year they built their house and moved to Upper Beaconsfield where they were already involved in local activities, including the Historical Society.
Local identity Beryl Hails, who was the Secretary of the Upper Beaconsfield Association persuaded the Milligans to become members. John was rather surprised to find himself elected President in 1976. Beryl and John decided to ask all village groups to participate in a community "Activities Day". A very successful meeting was held on 20th March 1976. This event later became the Village Fair.
John was again President in 1977. Each year he was President, John wrote a "Newsletter to Members" which he delivered by hand, quite a task.
Following his example and aiming to have local news in every household, the next President Roger Francey, initiated the production of the Village Bell on July 1st 1978. John became a major contributor, combining with Roy Harris and Diana Rocke to produce a well written and researched historical article in most of the early issues. These articles form the backbone of an Upper Beaconsfield history which will be written one day.
Having displayed his talents, he was next invited to assist in the revision of the "Early Days of Berwick" 3rd Edition which was completed in 1979. He then accepted the big task of sifting and assembling information needed for "In the Wake of the Pack Tracks", which was published in 1982.
The Centenary of both the Hall and the Primary School occurred in 1984. The Centenary Committee invited John to compile a history of both. This he did, with help from Terry and Nancy Boura.
In 1992 he published "Ash Wednesday in Upper Beaconsfield", dedicated to Terry who died earlier that year.
The following year he produced "The History of St. John's Anglican Church Upper Beaconsfield" an elegant volume, and then generously donated all copies free of charge to the Church.
Terry, who died on 14th March 1992, was as able and probably even more energetic than John. Whatever she did was well done. We especially remember her for her work as Treasurer of the Fire Brigade and also the Fire Brigade Auxiliary from the time of her arrival in Upper Beaconsfield until her death, and also for her involvement with Red Cross. She was a great contributor, a strong happy and cheerful lady, who thought and spoke with great clarity.
John and Terry were joint Citizens of the Year in 1980.
John is still helping us. He is responsible for mailing copies of The Village Bell to "expatriates" who wish to receive it, and as a "Citizen" helps to care for the Memorial Gardens. Although he is physically limited - he still wields a "wicked rake" and cares for the occasional bonfire. John Rowlands Milligan17

Philip Harris Oldfield McArdell had spent a short time in Upper Beaconsfield prior to 1896 when the family moved to Western Australia. Philip Harris Oldfield McArdell enlisted with the 11th Battalion, 15th Reinforcement on 30 Dec 1915 when he was 33 years old. SERN 4856. His unit embarked from Fremantle on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 1 Apr 1916. He was killed in action on 15 Jul 1917, and is buried Mud Corner British Cemetery (Plot II, Row B, Grave No. 5), Belgium. Two of his brothers also served in the War.1

World War I

John Orson Oldfield McArdell had spent a short time in Upper Beaconsfield prior to 1896 when the family moved to Western Australia. John Orson Oldfield McArdell was a mine manager aged 38 when he enlisted on 29 Nov 1915 with the Mining Corps, Company 3. His unit embarked from Sydney, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 20 Feb 1916. He was promoted to Captain of the Mining Corps. He received a Military Cross 'For conspicuous galllantry and devotion to duty in supervising the work of investigation parties from 4th to 30th October 1918, during the advance from Harnes to Rongy and the Scheldt. Although over 1,200 mines or traps were removed or rendered harmless not one casualty occurred. He frequently carried out the work under shell fire in front of the advancing troops.' He returned to Australia on 1 Jun 1919.
Two of his brothers also served in the war, one of them was killed in action.1,2

    Falling from his horse at Berwick when the saddle girth snapped on Saturday, Charles Edward Henderson, 48, of Upper Beaconsfield, was fatally injured.12
  • 28 Oct 1942: Fatal Fall From Horse. UPPER BEACONSFIELD TRAGEDY.
    WHILE helping to round up some horses at his residence, “Amesfield,” Upper Beaconsfield, last Saturday, Mr. Charles Edward Henderson, 50, a well known resident of the district was killed, apparently by a fall from his horse. Nobody saw what happened and the first inkling anybody had of the tragedy was when Mr. Henderson’s riderless horse came galloping up.
    When Mr. J. S. Ogden whom deceased was assisting with the horses, went to investigate, he found deceased lying on the ground almost lifeless. He immediately got in touch with Dr. Leonard Langmore, of Berwick, but when he arrived he pronouced life extinct.
    Constable Bryant, of Berwick, was informed of the accident, and later Mr. McNabb, J.P., opened an inquest on the Monday, adjourning it to a date to be fixed.
    The late Mr. Henderson was a native of Aberdeen (Scotland) but had been out here for 16 years. He was very highly thought of throughout the Upper Beaconsfield district where the deepest sympathy is felt for his bereaved wife.
    The funeral, which was a private one, moved off from the Presbyterian Church, Berwick, for the Berwick cemetery on Monday, Rev. Cadwallader Jones performing the obsequies.
