Sir, I received an acount from the land office for £9.19.0 for witch at Present I am not able to meet unless I am alowed to Morgage the land and get some money by doin so. I came here I thought well prepared to make a home. I brought nine young cows two horses dray and implements and some ready money. The cows have all died except one and I have had three horses die also the land is so very poor that I have not been able to sell any produce from it it will not grow anything unless with plenty of menuer witch is very hard to be got it take me all my time to grow hay for the horses and a little green feed for the two or three cows I have got left. The walabys hares and ... take half of it and destroy nealy all I work very hard all day and then i have to be up half the night to keep them away there is no one growing anything within a mile of me the land is nearly all in the hands of the non resident and they do nothing towards keeping the walabys hares and rabits down I must ask for at least three months unless I am alowed to morgage I remain yours & c William Johnson.4

Land-Note29 Apr 1895 Secr for Lands, Dear Sir, A Mr Johnson who has 106 acres at Gembrook called on us recently and asked us to pay his rent for him to the crown, and we offered to pay a years rent (£5.6.0) for him, he returned next day and stated that the Dept had agreed to take the years rent and not go to extremes, but upon our sending up the money last week, it was declined and the answer came back it was in the hands of the Crown Prosecutor.
We think this is a very hard case, Johnson is a poor, old, grey headed man, at present trying to earn a living by fossicking at Rushworth; the old man was so frightened at the notices he received from the Dept that he tramped all the way to Melbourne, made the above arrangements and then tramped back.
The years rent will be paid by us if we get notice to pay it.

  • 24 Feb 1906: Amongst Prahran Pioneers. Talks about Bygone Days. Bush, Blacks, and Tracks. Old Time Reminiscences. Mr John Stewart, James Street, Windsor. With his mother and father, Mr Stewart arrived in Melbourne from Dundee in 1841, after a voyage of six months. The passage at times was a very stormy one, and on reaching more mature years, Mr Stewart learned that the ship had to be battened down twice to prevent her going to the bottom. He has four brothtrs and five sisters, the family comprising ten. "We came to Prahran in 1852," said Mr Stewart, "because my father met with an accident to his hand through working at his trade (engineer), and he started a grocer's shop. By the bye, my father, in the accident I have just mentioned, had his hand cut open, and it was cured simply by the application of cold water, showing that there is some good in cold water after all." Mr Stewart remembers Prahran as a bush. His father bought some trees off the Crown ranger, Peter King. Wattle grew very thickly in and around what is now Wellington street. Chapel street used to be used as a racecourse, and at holiday times race meetings were held. Of Sir Frederick Sargood's father, the first Mayor of Prahran, Mr Stewart remembers his own father saying what a fine gentlemanly man he was. As to the natives that used to visit Prahran in the bush days, Mr Stewart tells interesting tales of corroborees he witnessed. Mr Stewart had experience at the Jim Crow diggings near Daylesford. He made a little money, returned to Prahran, and has resided in the same house for forty years.6
  • 12 Jun 1909: OBITUARY. MR. JOHN STEWART.
    Mr John Stewart, the well-known contractor, of James street, Windsor, died at his residence on Monday night last, after an illness extending over 12 months. The deceased gentleman was 68 years of age, and leaves a widow and a grown up family of four sons and one daughter. There are also three brothers and three sisters of the deceased, the former being Messrs Andrew, William and George Stewart. The late Mr John Stewart had been a resident of Prahran for the past 58 years, being, therefore, one of the pioneers of the district. He was a member of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows and the Protestant Alliance, and District Trustee of both. Being such an old resident, the late Mr Stewart was well known throughout the community, and was held in high respect and esteem. The funeral took place on Wednesday, the interment taking place in the St. Kilda cemetery, when a very large number of friends and acquaintances attended to pay their final respects. The burial service was read by the Rev. Harry P. Joyce, of the Congregational Church, Prahran. The mortuary arrangements were in the hands of Drayton and Garson.7

    Probate has been granted of the will of Mrs. Jane Stewart, of Flinders-street, Sydney, widow of the late Mr. John Stewart, formerly of Windsor, Victoria, who died on February 5. She appointed her son Daniel, her daughter Jane Forster, and Ethel Blanche Westley, executors and trustees, and bequeathed the whole of her property to her children. The estate was valued at £48,190, of which £29,150 was real estate. The latter included properties in Oxford-street, Sydney, Walker-street, North Sydney, and Paddington.8

    Pluck, Industry, and Integrity. An Old 'Bell-Ringer.' Mr. W. H. Nicholls of Malvern.
    Upwards of two hundred and fifty of our prominent local personages have now been honored with a place in Our Gallery of Portraits, and of that number it is a significant fact that the majority are men who have started at the foot of the ladder of fame, and by pluck, industry, and integrity have attained what mankind is always ambitious for— success. The subject of our sketch to-day is another illustration of this. Mr. William Henry Nicholls, of Shaftesbury-avenue, Malvern, is one of tbe adventurous spirits who arrived in this district in the 'sixties' and be has been more or less closely identified with it ever since. He was born at Richmond, in Surrey, England, and received his education at the local national school. At the age of 14 years he was apprenticed to the building trade, and on completing his indentures, at the age of 21 he was appointed to the position of fore man to Messre. W. R. Drew and Sons, a firm that has been established nearly two centuries. It is worthy of note that this position had not been vacant for 34 years. He was at this time president of the building trade union ; but notwithstanding tbe brightness of his prospects on bis native heath he longed to roam and explore fresh fields of enterprise, and in 1865 he migrated to Melbourne, arriving in February of the following year by the 'Mary Warren' after a voyage of 106 days. On arrival he soon found himself at the residence of Mr. Rouvray in Hornby street, Windsor, and fifteen months later led to the hymeneal altar a daughter of that gentleman, a lady who though born in Regent's Park is virtually an Australian, having resided in the colony since 1854, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholls have, therefore, been married twenty-five years, and their 'silver wedding ' was duly rejoiced over in the presence of a number of their friends on the 23rd of May last.
    Employment at the time of Mr. Nicholls' arrival in the colony was scarce, more particularly in the building trade ; but out of his earnings he was in a very short time enabled to buy 66ft of land in Hanover street, Windsor, at 10s. per foot He worked hard at his trade op to 1874, being engaged in the construction of many of the largest houses and business establishments that were continually springing up in Melbourne and suburbs, and as a reward of his industry he was enabled to take a trip with his wife to the old country, going by tbe long route around Cape Horne, in the sailing ship, the ' Hydaspes.' On arrival in London be and his better half stayed five months with his parents. After visiting Paris and other places of note, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholls returned to Australia in the 'St Osyth,' arriving on Christmas morning, terminating a splendid passage of 44 days. Mr. Nicholls has for many years taken an active interest in friendly societies, having been a member of the M.D.I.O.O.F. since 1866. In 1883 he filled the provincial chair of tbe South Melbourne District and was subsequently elevated to one of the highest offices in the order— a board director of the Manchester Unity in Victoria. He is also a member of the order of Freemasons. As a lad he developed a fancy for bell-ringing and on Sundays chimed sacred music on the tower bells. He brought this hobby with him to the colony, and became a prominent member of the original band of bell-ringers, and was instrumental in adding two extra bells at St. James' Church, Melbourne. He was present by invitation at the opening of the bells of St. Paul's, Geelong, and took part in similar ceremonies at the town hall, Ballarat, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and St. Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne, which has the finest peal of bells in the colony. He was also in the old country a member of the volunteer military force, having had as a comrade in arms, Cr. W. B. Looker, J.P., now of Oakleigh. In 1884 Mr. Nicholls speculated freely in land, and entered extensively in building operations, some of the finest villas in. Prahran, Malvern, and surrounding district furnishing evidence of his skill as a designer. He also designed tbe elevation and carried out the construction of the pile of buildings on the corner of Chapel and High streets, of which Messrs. H. Morris Jones and Co's warehouse is the central figure. In 1886 he paid another visit to England, Ireland, Scotland, and the continent, and on his return after a twelve mouths' absence, he engaged in business in Sydney; but soon returned to Victoria, having speculated largely in the Malvern property known as the Pine Hill, comprising 20 acres at the corner of Glenferrie and Wattletree roads, now subdivided by Edsall, Stewart, and Nicholls streets. The syndicate, of which he was a member, paid £20,000 for this property, which at the time of purchase was considered an exorbitant figure; but it has, nevertheless, resulted in a most profitable investment Mr. Nicholls has speculated to a very large extent in Malvern properties in the Central and Western ridings, and having become so thoroughly glued to the spot he has now dropped his anchor, and is anxious to utilise the time at his disposal in forward ing the interests of the district for which be considers much advancement and pros perity is in store. With this end in view be will be a candidate for a seat in the Malvern shire council next month, in opposition to Cr. W. L. Stillman, whose term of office then expires.8

  • 26 Aug 1916: Death of son: We regret having to record the death of Mr Thomas Ellis, a well known painter and decorator, of Prahran, which took place at his residence, Lewisham Road, Windsor, on Wednesday. The deceased gentleman was 54 years of age, and leaves a widow, but no family. He was the eldest son of Mr Thomas Ellis, an ex-Mayor of Prahran, and had been a resident of Prahran practically all his life. Mr Robt. Ellis, painter and decorator, of Commercial Road, South Yarra, is a brother. The late Mr Ellis was of a retiring disposition, and unlike his worthy father in times past showed no inclination to actively associate himself with public affairs. He was a citizen of high repute, and general regret has been felt at his demise. His death was not quite unexpected, as he had been ailing for some time. There was a representative gathering at the funeral, which took place at the St. Kilda Cemetery yesterday.13
  • 6 Jun 1966: Here for 100 years About 300 descendants of a former mayor of Prahran celebrated the centenary of their family in Australia at the week end. They are descended from Thomas Ellis, who brought his family to Melbourne from England in 1866, and was mayor of Prahran in 1890-91. Mr. Ellis, who was a painter and decorator, landed at Melbourne on July 3, 1866. His descendants came from as far as Brisbane, Sydney and western New South Wales to join Melbourne relatives in the weekend celebrations. A party in Prahran town hall of Saturday night was attended by the present mayor (Cr. G. T. Gahan) and Mr. Loxton, MLA. Two young descendants of Thomas Ellis - Gary Wood, 18, and Mary Ellis, 16 - enacted the roles of Mayor Ellis and his mayoress, were dressed as the couple were photographed at the 1890 mayoral ball. Yesterday, 200 of the family joined in a picnic at Semco Park, Black Rock.14
