(Witness) Archive | 30 Jan 1896 | Re Trial of Eli Harris. Henry Laurie states: I am a professor at the Melb University. I remember the 20th of December 1894. On or about that date my (late) wife, my family and myself took possession of the house "Fassifern", at Beaconsfield which we rented from Mrs Crouch. We occupied the house about 7 weeks and fixing the date of departure by the rent paid. I believe it to be the 7th or 8th of February 1895. We left the property in the house intact "according to the inventory" as we received it. I did not dispose of or remove any property in the house, nor did I authorise any other person to do so. Memo. Prof. Laurie left Melbourne for Berwick today 30th inst. and will be there till Tuesday the 4th pros. His address is care of Mrs Elmes, Berwick.8 |

(Witness) Inquest | 14 Dec 1896 | Bessie Clark witnessed the Inquest of Annie Ina Harris on 14 Dec 1896; 1896/1532. Annie Ina Harris died at Berwick on the 14th day of December 1896 from the effects of burns accidentally received at Officer on Sunday the 13th day of December 1896. This deponent Ruby Harris on her oath saith, I am twelve years of age. I reside with my mother at Officer. I know deceased, she is my sister. Between three and four o'clock yesterday afternoon the 13th December 1896 my mother was away from home. There were five of us children at home. The deceased was playing in the kitchen by herself. She ran out of the kitchen screaming. I went to see what was the matter and found all her clothes on fire. I got a bag and wrapped around her. I then removed the burnt clothing and placed her on the bed. I then went for my mother who was at a neighbour's house and informed her what had occurred, deceased was quite conscious and spoke to me. When deceased screamed out first I and the rest of the family were in a house about 7 yards away, there was some fruit on the fire at the time for jam making, and she may have been helping herself to it and this is the only way I can account for her clothes catching fire. Ruby Harris Taken and sworn before me the 14th day of December 1896 at Berwick. James Wilson, JP
This deponent Elizabeth Harris on her oath saith, I am a married woman residing at Officer. Deceased was my daughter, she would be four years of age next March. About two or three o'clock yesterday afternoon 13th December 1896 I went to a neighbour's house about a quarter of a mile away. When I left home I left my six children at home, everything was quite safe when I went away. I was away about half an hour when my daughter Daisy came running over and told me Ina was burnt and I returned at once, when I arrived home I found deceased on the children's bed all her clothes had been removed, on examination I found deceased was very much burnt about the face and body. I wrapped her up and brought her in all haste to Dr Bennie at Berwick. He attended to her at once, and did all he could. I asked him what his opinion was and he pronounced the case as hopeless and on the Doctor's recommendation I removed the child to the house of Mrs Ladd. After every care deceased expired between half past twelve and one o'clock this morning. The distance from Officer where the accident happened to Berwick is about seven miles. When I left home there was a small fire in the kitchen and left a pan containing fruit on the fire, I cannot account how the accident occurred. E. Harris Taken and sworn before me the 14th day of December 1896 at Berwick. James Wilson, JP.5 |

Annie Rebecca Crouch
F, #2174, b. 12 Mar 1849, d. 25 Aug 1888
Note* | | Ann Rebecca Crouch, sketcher, was one of at least eight children of Thomas James Crouch, a prominent Wesleyan temperance advocate, and his Quaker convert wife Sarah, née Rothwell, who had been a governess before her marriage in 1832. One of Annie's brothers, Thomas James Crouch (1833 89), became a partner in the well-known Melbourne architectural firm of Crouch & Wilson. Her parents' portraits were sketched in 1848 by J. Harrison, who may have given Annie drawing lessons. Annie Crouch drew crude pencil and watercolour views of Hobart Town in the early 1860s: a watercolour view of a somewhat precipitously located town (1863) and an undated pencil sketch of Thims Cottage, the Residence of T.J. Crouch Esq. from Burnett Street (both Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery) are examples. The family's impressive two-storey Gothic Revival home appears in the distance in the latter, while the distinctly unpicturesque foreground features yard, fence and goat. A 'crayon' (pastel?) drawing The Ferry was sent to the 1866 Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition by her mother. Annie Crouch married R.W.G. Shoobridge in 1871.1 |

Birth* | 11 Jun 1847 | Richmond, TAS, Australia.1 |
Marriage* | 7 Dec 1871 | Spouse: Annie Rebecca Crouch. Hobart, TAS, Australia.2 |
Widower | 25 Aug 1888 | Robert Wilkins Giblin Shoobridge became a widower upon the death of his wife Annie Rebecca Crouch.3 |
Death* | 13 May 1936 | Hobart, TAS, Australia.1 |
Anecdote* | | Robert Shoobridge was born at Glenayr on 11 June 1847. Moving from Bushy Park, he took over Valleyfield estate near New Norfolk, producing an annual apple crop of 40,000 bushels. He had a particular interest in cool storage: as president of the Fruitgrowers' Association he travelled to London with a cargo of apples, advising on storage and critical temperatures, to establish standard shipboard conditions.
Locally a road trustee and municipal councillor, Robert was responsible for modernization of the New Norfolk water-supply system. He built the New Norfolk Cottage Hospital and promoted church construction at Glenfern, Molesworth, Moonah and New Norfolk. He was government visitor to the New Norfolk Mental Asylum. Robert died in Hobart on 13 May 1936, predeceased by his wife Annie Rebecca, née Crouch, whom he had married in Hobart Town with Wesleyan forms on 7 December 1871, and by five of their children. Five daughters survived him.4 |
