  • 26 Aug 1916: EQUAL PRIZE. B GRADE Mountjoy, Beaconsfield, 29/7/16. DOGS IN PEACE AND WAR.
The actions of some dogs would lead people to suppose that they think out what they do. This is not so, because it has been proved that their actions are controlled by instinct. The cleverest of dogs are the Great Danes, the Newfoundlands, the collies, and a few others. The following is a story about a Newfoundland dog:—"A little boy had been out for a walk with it; and they were crossing a bridge, when the child stood up on the parapet to look at the water, and fell in. Instantly, the dog jumped in after him, and managed to catch hold of him, but, as the banks were very steep at that part of the river, it could not get out. It then swam further along, and found a landing place, then carried the child up to the bridge again and left him there till he could find at means of conveying him home. Just as he dropped the child he saw at motor car crossing the bridge. He ran barking in front of the car, till the man stopped to see what was the matter. The dog ran, still barking, to the child, and the man followed. He put the child in the car, and the dog ran in front, and kept looking back to see if the car was following. They got the child safely home, and so through the courage and cleverness of a dog, was a child's life saved. This is only one of the stories about the cleverlness of dogs. There are many others. Dogs are trained to draw sleighs over the snow in the Arctic regions. They are also trained to perform tricks at circuses, and some kinds are very useful for watch dogs, besides being kept as pets. If dogs are useful in peace, they are just as useful in war time: In modern warfare, some nations use dogs to draw machine guns. In the present war, the Germans use dogs as messengers to carry despatches from one part of their lines to another. A dog called Bombshell, whose master was a gun tester, saved two little children from serious injury, through shock by the discharge of a big gun. They were playing on the beach unobserved by the gunner, and they were so near the gun that the discharge would have fattally injured them. The dog drew his master to the spot, and so saved the lives of the children. He was afterwards decorated by his master for his sagacity. When people keep dogs, they should remember what faithful animals they are, and treat them kindly. FRANK LEE, Class B, 11 years 6 months.9
  • 6 Sep 1916: A lad named Frank Lee, who resides at "Mountjoy," Beaconsfield, and attends the Berwick school, has won a first prize given by "The Leader," for the best essay on "Dogs in Peace and War," for children under 12 years of age.10

  • 28 Aug 1907: Berwick Shire, Correspondence: From Dr C. C. Muir, Health Officer, resigning his position and intimating he had sold his practice at Berwick to Dr Percy Vance Langmore, and requesting that his successor be appointed health officer.-Cr T. Bourke thought they should have a health officer for Pakenham and Bunyip as well as Berwick end, as the officer at Berwick had been lax in his duties in cases of infectious diseases at the School, such as whooping cough, which he had failed to attend and report on same. The Board of Advice was blamed in the matter, but it was simply a matter for the health officer, who had neglected his duties. He thought they should appoint Dr Helwig for this district, when matters would work out more satifactory.-Cr Cass endorsed, and said he had called attention to fact of the main drain at Koo-wee-rup being polluted, and no action had been taken by the health officer.-The chairman said they could appoint Dr Langmore for Berwick and Beaconsfield Ridings, and Dr Helwig for the rest of the Shire, which would give general satisfaction:-It was decided to act accordingly.
