About a month ago the Berwick Shire Council appointed a special officer to keep a lookout for persons who caused damages to the shire roads, and that the appointment was justified was proved by the fact that at the Pakenham Police Court on Saturday, before Mr. Harris, P.M., the Council proceeded against Alfred Simmons and his son Leslie for having dragged a log, fastened to the axle of a dray, along the road at West Gembrook, and thereby damaging the road to a considerable extent: Simmons was fined £1 and 2/6 costs, and the son, who, way, working for his father, was fined 2/6 and 2/6 costs. • 25 Nov 1920: "Razors Under Pillow". DECREE NISI GRANTED
"If it suited me, I would be with you today, but when a man sleeps with razors under his pillow, and revolvers about the place, it tis about time to quit."
So wrote Gertrude Tucker, 30, dressmaker, Swan street, Richmond, to her husband, Harry Elisha Tucker, 31, Green street, Richmond, who before Mr Justice Mann, in the Second Civil Court today, petitioned for a divorce from his wife on the ground of wilful desertion. The contents of this letter were stated to be untrue.
    The petition was uncontested.
His Honor granted a decree nisi and petitioner was given custody of the only child of the marriage. Mr L. S. Woolf, who represented petitioner, stated that the husband had strong grounds for believing that he had been thrown over, because the wife preferred the company of another man, but he had been unable to procure sufficient evidence on the matter. The marriage took place on September 6, 1909, at St. Stephen's Church, Richmond, and there was one child. Petitioner gave evidence to the effect that up till the latter part of 1911 he resided with his wife in Lennox street, Richmond. She carried on a dressmaking business there. Robert S. Richards, a friend of his wife's brother, began to visit the house, and he became suspicious and asked respondent not to see the man again. She ignored his request. They left Lennox street in February, 1915, and went to Lord street in the same suburb. Witness attributed his wife's extraordinary conduct to her infatuation for Richards, because she had told him on one occasion that she would "rather have Richards' little finger than witness's whole body." When she went out at night she used to remove her wedding ring. On various occasions she had left him for periods extending from two to six or seven months. They last lived together in Chestnut street, Richmond, but his wife disappeared in September, 1917, and had not since returned. Harry Elisha Tucker10
  • 23 Mar 1931: Gertrude Hogan, of Cockatoo, was charged at the police court on Friday with having opened a dance hall at Cockatoo, that had been condemned as structurally unsafe and a danger for fire by the Health Commission on 11th June, 1930. Defendant had interviewed an officer of the Health department in December to inquire whether she was liable if she opened the hall and charged only for refreshments. She was informed that it was doubtful, as no prosecutions had proceeded along those lines. She had opened the hall for dancing during the holidays, and charged 1/6 for refreshments. Defendant, who did not appear, was fined £5, with £2 15/ costs.11
