  • 9 Dec 1882: DISASTROUS RAILWAY ACCIDENT. Melbourne was thrown into a state of excitement on Saturday night by the occurrence of a deplorable railway accident. The disaster happened on the Hawthorn line, near the Picnic station, at 23 minutes past 6 o'clock in the evening. It was no ordinary accident, but one of those catastrophes the mere report of which is received with a shock of horror.
    Two long trains, both filled with passengers, travelling in opposite directions on the same line of rails, ran into each other with such violence that four of the carriages were completely wrecked. The collision took place on a curve of the line, and the trains saw nothing of each other until they were on the curve, and then the distance between them proved too short to pnll up in time. Each engine gave four or five spasmodic whistles.
    LIST OF CASUALTIES.
    Mr G. W. Taylor, auctioneer, Queen-street, who was conducting the sale at Box-hill, rode home in the second carriage of the special, Mr Scourfield, of the firm of Scoutfield and Coultas, and Mr Evans, of East St. Kilda, being in the same compartment. Mr Taylor was dozing when the collision occured, and the first intimation he had was a blow on the left temple and hearing a loud crash as "though a cannon had gone off near." Mr Taylor had been sitting with his back to the engine, and opposite him was Mr. Scourfield, who appeared to be thrown violently against Mr Taylor. The opposite side of the carriage was crushed in, and the seat came into collision with Mr Taylor's legs, which would undoubtedly have been broken but for the cushions. Mr Taylor remained jammed in the position indicated between 15 or 20 minutes, Mr. Evans, who was on his right, being in the same predicament. The two were removed from the debris by some people who came to their assistance. Both Mr Taylor and Mr. Evans were taken to Dr Williams' surgery, Collins-street, but that gentleman was away, and each of the sufferers was then taken home. Mr. Taylor received a severe blow on the left temple, his legs and feet are cut, and he suffers from a pain across the chest. Drs. Fetherston and Williams proceeded to Mr. Taylor's residence, Wynnstay-house, Orrong-road, and were in attendance upon Mr. Taylor soon after the injured gentleman arrived home, and they have been in frequent attendance since. No bones are broken, and the injury on the temple has not affected the eyesight. Mr Taylor had two clerks in the train, one of these, his principal clerk, Mr. H. Pye, was reported to be seriously hurt, and another, Mr. Peacock, slightly stunned. Mr. Peacock was in the Windsor accident. Mr. Taylor states that when the train started back from Box-hill he asked a porter if the train could stop at Hawthorn, and the porter said it would do so. [only part of article]15
  • 20 Aug 1887: OUR COLONISTS ABROAD. CR. Geo. W. TAYLOR.
    In a private letter to a citizen, written at the "Wynnstay Arms Hotel, Ruabon, Wales," by our old friend, Cr Geo. W. Taylor, and dated 14th July, a description is given of the triumphant welcome accorded him in his native land. Mr Taylor had arrived at Rhos, his birthplace, on the previous day, and was welcomed by thousands of his countrymen. A procession was formed and headed by a band of music, Mr and Mrs Taylor were escorted to the public hall, where congratulatory speeches were delivered. A Welsh ode had been composed for the occasion, the words and music of which aroused Mr Taylor to a perfect pitch of enthusiasm, and it can be well imagined that his reply elicited deafening applause. During the progress of the procession the horses were taken from the vehicle in which Mr and Mrs Taylor were seated, and a number of their old associates dragged the vehicle a distance of a mile and a-half. It must be very gratifying to the honored ones to find such a good feeling existing towards them after an absence of so many years. Mr Taylor in his letter desires to be remembered to all inquiring friends.16
  • 10 Apr 1888: PEGGIE V. TAYLOR.
    This action was brought by Mr. George Peggie, a farmer, against Mr. George William Taylor, auctioneer, in order to obtain a decree that Mr. Taylor should remove from the register a contract of sale affecting some land of the plaintiff at the corner of the Dandenong and Murrumbeena roads. In July, 1887, Mr. Peggie sold the land to Mr. G. M. Moody, of Neill street, Carlton, for a sum of £3,593, and this contract was assigned to Mr. W. J. Woolcott and Mr. F W. Nash. The plaintiff alleged that after he had sold the property, in consequence of requisitions on his title, he became aware that a contract had been registered with the registrar-general purporting to affect the land. This contract was said to have been made on the 8th Sep- tember, 1885, by one J. V. H. Newton, who purported to act as agent for him, and who purported to sell the property on his behalf to Mr. Taylor. The plaintiff denied that Newton had any authority from him to sell the property to Mr. Taylor. The defendant asserted that Newton had the authority to sell.
    Mr. Neighbour and Mr. Agg appeared for the plaintiff , Mr. Purves, Q.C. and Mr. Anderson for the defendant.
    After the case was partly heard, it was agreed on behalf of the defendant that judgment should be entered for the plaintiff with costs and that the defendant should take the contract off the register.17
  • 12 Sep 1888: We have received a very lengthy extract from the Ostwestry Advertiser and Border Counties Herald, in which pleasing allusion is made to Mr. G. W. Taylor, so well known in Melbourne in connection with the firm of G. W. Taylor and Co., auctioneers, &c., but we have not space for it this week; however, except the reference to Mr. Taylor, it would be quite uninteresting to our readers.18
  • 28 Nov 1888: ACTION FOR COMMISSION. A case was heard in the County Court on Tuesday in which the trustees of the Melbourne Convalescent Home for Women were the defendants under the following circumstances:—Richard Hetherington Mundell, land agent, Elizabeth street was plaintlff, and a Robert Harper, Sir Arthur Thomas Nicholson and Harold Pennington, trustees, and Emily Swyer, Superintendent of the Home, were defendants.
    The suit was for £250 commission at 2½ per cent on £10,000 purchase money on a sale made by plaintiff to Mr. George William Taylor, of Collins street west, of a piece of land 11a. 1r. 14p. being the Crown allotments 39 and 40 in the Parish of Mulgrave, the said sale being made on 9th May. Mr. Bryant appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. Johnston for the defendants. The plaintiff alleged that in April last he saw Miss Swyer, the Superintendent of the Home, and telling her shee had heard that the Oakleigh property was for sale, asked if it was true. Miss Swyer said it was, and on plaintiff's asking that he might be allowed to sell it if he could, she placed the property in his hands for sale. He then sought a purchaser, and speaking to Mr. Taylor, that gentleman considered the matter, but slightly demurred to the price. On this the plaintiff sought Miss Swyer again, and she said they would not take less than £10,000. The plaintiff communicated this to Mr. Taylor, and after considering this Mr. Taylor agreed to pay it, and the sale was effected. On this the plaintiff demanded his commission. The defence was the denial that the plaintiff had effected the sale, which was made between the principals themselves; also that Miss Swyer had no authority to put the place in plaintiffs hands for sale. The plaintiff swore that Miss Swyer had said to him, " If you get us £10,000 we will give you 2½ per cent commission," but that when he saw her subsequently to the sale she said to him, "You will not get anything, as we made the sale ourselves." Samuel Cohen, a land speculator, swore that he was present and heard Miss Swyer tell the plaintiff that he should have 2½ per cent. commission if he sold the land for £10,000. Mr. G. W. Taylor said the plaintiff introduced the property to him, and it was in consequence of this he bought the property. Mr. Taylor also said he went and saw Miss Swyer who referred him to Mrs. Pennington, one of the Vice presidents of the Home, and he submitted a written offer to her. He told Miss Swyer that Mr. Mundell had spoken to him about the Home, telling him it was for sale.
    Mr. Johnston submitted there was no evidence against the trustees, or of any authority being delegated by them to Miss Swyer to put the sale in anybody's hands, and asked that their names names should be struck out as defendants. Mr. Bryant argued that Miss Swyer was the superintendent and manager of the Home, and acted for them, and any act done by Miss Sywers was evidence against the trustees.
    His Honor declined to strike the trustees names out. In the opening of the defence considerable skirmishing as to the admissions of evidence, one portion of which being proof of the absence of Miss Swyer, who is in Adelaide at present, which at one time threatened a collapse of the case for the day, but it was decided to take other evidence. A Mrs. Ada Pennington, Vice-President of the Home, was placed in the box. Mrs. Pennington testified that when Mr. Taylor saw her Mr. Mundell's name was never mentioned. It was only some time after the sale was effected that she heard his name mentioned by Miss Swyer in connexion with the sale. She also testified that Miss Swyer had never had authority delegated to her to place the home for sale in any agent's hands, and when Mr. Taylor made the offer she suggested that she should put it in writing so she could place it before the committee. This was done and a sale was effected. Harold Pennington testified the trustees had not delegated any such authority as she exercised re the sale. The Council then addressed the jury, and His Honor having summed up, and the case then went over to the jury. The jury returned a verdict for the defendants, costs to be taxed.19
  • 21 Feb 1891: Ex-mayor G. W. Taylor was the nominal defendant in an action introduced into the Prahran court on Thursday, the plaintiff being Dennis Hutchins, Mr. Taylor's former coachman, who sued for £84, work and labour done. On Mr. Taylor leaving for England, plaintiff was left in charge of 'Wynnstay' at a salary of £2 10s. a week. About a fortnight ago he received notice from Mr. Palmer, agent for defendant under power of attorney, to quit, and he then made the claim which was for looking after some additional furniture valued at £600, which was put into the mansion on the 5th October, 1889, and kept in order until the 5th inst. Five of the magistrates were in favor of dismissing the case, and four for making an order. The chairman said the opinion of the majority must rule, and the case was dismissed without costs.20
  • 3 May 1893: EITHER THE MAYOR of Prahran is unfamiliar with the history of the city whose destiny he guides, or the report of the address which he is alleged to have read to the Acting-Governor last week on the occasion of the opening of the garden festival is the outcome of the imaginative brain of a foreigner who has not made local history a special study. It was not the Earl and Countess of Hopetoun who dedicated the Victoria Gardens for the pleasure of the citizens, that function having been duly performed on the 7th August, 1885, by Lady Loch, the occasion being remarkable for its enthusiasm, the festive proceedings which accompanied the ceremony being kept up at "Wynnstay," the private residence of Mr. G. W. Taylor, the then mayor, till an early hour on the following morning, thousands of citizens taking part in the carnival. The second occasion on which Vice-Royalty honoured the gardens with its presence was on the 17th April, 1890, when the Earl and Countess of Hopetoun visited Prahran, and were entertained by Cr. Fuller, who then filled the office of mayor of the city.21
  • 10 Sep 1910: ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
    A. C. A. — Prahran was proclaimed a city on the 27th May, 1879, Cr. Samuel Willis being mayor at the time. Cr G. W. Taylor was mayor in 1884-5, and it was in his year of office that the Victorian Gardens were opened, viz., on Friday, 7th August, 1885, by H. E. Sir Henry Loch. A garden party was given by the Mayor and Mayoress at their residence, "Wynnstay," and the children of the city entertained in a field adjoining.22
  • 31 Jul 1913: The friends of Mr George William Taylor, formerly of this city and mayor of Prahran, will regret to learn of his death, which took place in London on 26th inst., from heart failure.23

After coming to Australia he spent over 13 years of his active life as Presbyterian minister at Albury, and seven at Burwood. He had been a resident of Camberwell for 23 years. Though he had retired for some years, he continued to the last to take an active interest in the fellowship meetings of the Trinity Presbyterian Church, Camberwell. He was buried at Albury on the 11th inst.5
