    Mr. J. Surrey Brown, Sturt A player for more than 20 years, and a secretary for 17, Mr. James Surrey Brown has had a long and varied experience in this and other States. He has lived in South Australia for 15 years, having spent the major portion of his life in Victoria and Western Australia.
    Mr. Brown became a member of Sturt Bowling Club, of which he is secretary, 10 years ago, and two years later took over secretarial duties.
    He first played bowls in Victoria with the Camberwell Club, of which he was a member for three years. At the end of that period he left for Western Australia, where he joined the Royal Park Club, serving as secretary for a similar number of years.
    Before he joined Sturt Club, Mr. Brown played for Hawthorn for three years, and was also secretary. While in Melbourne he was a delegate to the Victorian Bowling Association, and acted in the same capacity for his club to Western Australian Bowling Association. Representing Hawthorn and Sturt Clubs he has been a delegate to the South Australian Bowling Association for about 10 years.
    Mr. Brown was born at sea on the Surrey, which was on its way to Australia from England. He was chistened "Surrey," his second name, after the ship.
    While a youth in Melbourne he became a member of the Mercantile Rowing Club, of which he was one of the founders. The club is still in existence, and is one of the leading combinations in the Victoria capital.
    Sturt Club has reason to be grateful for his services. Since he has been in office, several improvements which are largely due to his efforts, have been effected. The clubhouse has been extended and the interior practically remodelled. Few clubhouses in Adelaide compare with it in the conveniences for members. The club has been highly successful in tournaments, having on three occasions won the Laidlaw electric light trophy, which was inaugurated in 1920. Teams in the B and C Grades in pennant matches have also won laurels.7

  • 13 Feb 1918: Death of a Well-known Civil Servant.
    The late Mr. Richard Melbourne Eades, whose death after an illness of only two days occurred last Friday, was for 21 years an officer of the Registrar General's Department, which he joined, shortly after his arrival from Melbourne, in March 1897.
    Under the then Registrar General, Mr. Malcolm A. C. Fraser, Mr. Eades was in 1900 appointed chief clerk in the Registry branch, which title was subsequently changed under the various successive schemes of classification of the Civil Service. During the absence on sick-leave of Mr. Fraser in 1913. Mr Eades was appointed acting Registrar General and Government Statistician, which appointment he held for about four months, until Mr. Fraser's return from England. The deceased gentleman was well-known to all Civil Servants in his capacity of honorary treasurer of the Civil Service Association, to which position he was elected in 1907, and in which capacity he acted until his time of his death. He was also, from its inception, an active member of the executive committee of the Civil Service Club. Of his services in connection with the treasurership of the association the ''Civil Service Journal" for January, 1914, says: "It is extremely doubtful whether there is another officer in the service who has done as much for the Service through the association as the hon. treasurer, Mr. R. M. Eades." Both in the association and the club, Mr. Eades was recognised as one of the most popular members, owing to his keen interest in the success of both institutions as well as his unfailing courtesy to all. Mr. Eades also took a very active share in the formation of the rifle club of the Colonial Secretary's Department, he being, to his great regret, by ago precluded from taking a more immediate part in the prosecution of the war. It is stated by those who knew the deceased before he came to this State, that he then took a prominent part in important cricket events. He was undoubtedly, an enthusiastic lover of sport.4
