Village BellAug 2003 Vale Miss Doris Clayton Goff 1902 - 2003
Miss Goff who died in April aged 101 years could fairly claim to have had an association with Upper Beaconsfield for more than a century, having been first brought here by her parents soon after she was born. She continued to make regular weekend and holiday visits to her home "Harpfields," until very recently when her visits were reduced.
She was truly a lady with great charm and ability. Even in her latter days she was alert, happy, smiling, cheerful, friendly, and possessed of good recall. She had an enormous pride in her family particularly her grandfather.
When their father died in 1958 the two Misses Goff inherited Harpfields. The furniture and decorations had changed little from their grandfather's day, a token of the family's respect for him. With the death of her older sister, Helen in 1982, Miss Doris became the sole owner for a short time until the house and contents were lost in the Ash Wednesday fires of 1983. She quickly rebuilt a house on the site, this time in brick, but still enjoying the lovely outlook to the north.
Miss Doris - "Dorrie" to her friends was fortunate to have had a very satisfying life. A nurse in her early days, she worked for a time at the Royal Children's Hospital, with children suffering with whooping cough, a common and dangerous disease of childhood until immunisation was introduced.
In her latter years she worked with Red Cross as a volunteer bookbinder. It was said she could turn her hand to any task, even upholstery. At weekends she spent much time in the garden, and even in recent years was sometimes to be seen repairing or painting her front fence.
Physically, she was a strong and active person and a life long golfer. It was appropriate that she celebrated her 100th birthday at the Commonwealth Golf Club in April 2002. It was a wonderful day for her; she was their oldest serving member, and as such was duly honoured.10
Probate (Will)4 Dec 2003 In her will Doris Goff made the following legacies: To her friend Beverley Marland $50,000; to the Australian Red Cross (Victorian Division) $2,000; to Faye and Russell Williams in appreciation of Faye's friendship and kindness, and her care as a neighbourn of my property $15,000; Asthma Foundation $2,000; Heart Foundation $2,000. In her codicil she added legacies to her friend Joan Wallway $15,000 and to Phyllis Evans $5,000 in appreciation of her support of Joan Goff when she was caring for Doris. The residue of the estate was to go to her nieces Joan Helen Goff (55 parts) and Barbara Jones (45 parts). The value of the estate was $1,813,800. See: Russell Arthur Williams Fay Alice Williams.11

Marriage-Notice17 Jun 1899 REID-GOFF. —On the 1st June, at All Saints Church, St Kilda, by Canon Potter, Ernest, second son of D Reid of Packawidgee, NSW, to Florence, only daughter of W H Goff, of Williams road, Windsor.4
Article*17 Sep 1904The article reads: BUSH SKETCHER. THE OLD STATION. By ERNEST REID.
One cold morning in July we all sat in the mail phaeton gazing tearfully at the old home for the last time. Old Harry, the only remaining hand, tottered round to wish us good-bye. The grasp of that honest, horny hand and a fervid "Good-bye, old Flick," brought a flood of scalding tears to my eyes. With an eager, forward jump the impatient, shivering horses whirled us along the hard white road to the "top gate," past the trees, logs, and stumps we knew so well. The belt of gaunt, dry trees in the swamp on our left seemed to run along with us, speeding us on our way. One long, last look as we passed through the gates—a blurred blending of house and foliage melted before our eyes. For years afterwards we often dreamt we were back again playing about our favourite haunts.
Standing by the bank of a large lagoon near the Murray with towering gum-trees in the background and smaller but more leafy ones dotted about the homestead paddock, it was an ideal place for a home. In spring they stood on a carpet of brightest green, richly flecked with the gold and purple of buttercup, and native pea.
The portion of the run lying between the homestead and the river was a truly enchanting place. Forests of the largest gums in Australia reared their towering heads to the sky, while hundreds of kangaroos, emus, and all kinds of native game found a secure hiding place among the thick clumps of saplings, tall grass, and driftwood. An evil reputation for snakes cast a weird fascination over all.
The steady "boom, boom" of some night bird could often be heard, and when the blacks told us that it was the bunyip in search of food, we were easily convinced and greatly scared.
The black children were our only play mates, and a hearty welcome they always got. The old blacks never tired of making weapons for us, and took the greatest interest in making us expert with the spear and in tracking game. Their folk lore held us spellbound as we sat round their camp-fire. Dumb terror would seize us when an old gin, pointing a bony finger at a dark object in the distance, uttered the magic words, "Wild blackfellow." We would draw closer to the fire, and wait till our mother sent for us, willingly risking punishment for staying so long, rather than venture the short distance in the dark.
Their bark canoes always had a fascination for us. Of all the frail craft in the world they are perhaps the frailest. Nature provides them ready fashioned in the shape of bending trees. The only work necessary is the outlining by a tomahawk. They are then slowly removed from the tree by inserting successive bark wedges. A tiny wall of clay is placed across the canoe at each end ; it is then ready for use. A thin straight net-stick is used to push it along, being used as a paddle in deep water.
When shifting camp the blacks rarely take their canoes with them. They are put under water alongside a sunken log within wading distance. In such positions they often lie for years, remaining in a fairly good state of preservation.
No weirder sight is imaginable than a procession of canoes at night, with a twinkling fire in the bows or each throwing it flickering gleams against the grotesquely-outlined forms of aborigines in full war paint. The kaleidoscopic reflection of the lights caused by the ripple, of the water makes the canoes appear as if gliding through liquid gold. The silent, ghastly giants of the forest stand, like grim sentinels before a canopy, of intensest gloom. The startled screech of a sulphur-crested cockatoo, increased a hundredfold by the stillness over all, causes a momentary thrillof terror, its aimless bewildered flight suggestive of some lost soul.
The blacks seldom stayed more than four or five weeks at a time, passing on to neighbouring stations. We missed them greatly, and counted the weeks till their return.
At odd times the rugged, picturesque forms of old-time shepherds made their way to the station, taking up their quarters at the "men's hut" for several days before continuing the aimless journey. Here comes Steve, the horse-breaker, driving a champing colt with long reins. It tries to bolt, but is soon steadied, while Steve, digging his heels into the ground, is carried along almost in a sitting posture. Never was there a more fearless rider. He always carried a steel whistle, and when riding a buckjumper would blow a shrill blast, driving the animal almost frantic in its efforts dislodge him.
He rarely got a fall. "Freddy, the black boy," rode equally well, taking keen delight in mounting the most vicious colts. One day, when galloping with a loaded gun after a wild dog, his horse stumbled and fell. Freddy was thrown on all-fours, with the gun beneath them, the shock causing it to discharge. Scrambling to his feet, with terror-stricken eyes, he quickly ran his hands over his body, feeling for the wound. Fortunately for him, the muzzle was away from him, and he was more frightened than hurt. When speaking of the incident afterwards, he pointed to a soup-plate, and said, in all seriousness, "I turned as white as that plate."
The "longing to be a man" is probably more ardently felt by the country boy than any other. He sees the musterers saddling-up in the early morning, and with envious eyes watches them ride cheerily off for the day's work among the sheep or cattle. He mounts his hobby-horse or stick, and, prancing off, fondly imagines himself some favourite stockman. When taken to a drafting-yard for the first time, the spectacle of several thousand sheep bewilders and frightens him. He takes good care to stick close to his "daddy" as they walk through the yard, with the sheep "ringing" round them. The clouds of fine dust, the shouting of the men, and bleating of the sheep make a lasting impression. After a day's lamb-marking, as the ewes and lambs appear to go rolling across the plain towards the setting sun, the bleating off the lambs is gradually silenced by the answering mother's anguished blare.5

Article1 Jul 1905The article reads: THE SKETCHER. A BUSH PHANTASY. By ERNEST REID.
A solemn stillness, save for the heavy breathing of the sleepers, hung over all, as Queyon lay rubbing bis chilled limbs. He had walked far during the day in search of game, and his legs ached with the coolness of the night air.
The last embers of the tiny fire had gone as the late moon slowly climbed the bole of a distant gum, flooding the forest with its mystic light.
A slight ripple of the water, and swaying of the tall reeds in the creek below, attracted his attention. He lay with expectant eyes on the spot, while the heavy, measured breaths of his companions served only to intensify his loneliness. Soon the black head and glistening shoulders of a "wild black fellow" slowly rose above the reeds, peering in the direction of the camp.
Half-numbed with the cold, and paralysed with fear, Queyon lay like a log, with his terror-stricken eyes fixed on the intruder. A dread fascination had come over him while his eyes instinctively followed the stealthy movements of the enemy towards the camp, in which his mother and sister lay sleeping. A dull thud, and stifled shriek broke the spell, and springing to his feet, and shouting to his companions, he rushed to his sister's gunyah. Too late. Helpless and insensible from the blow, she had been whisked from beneath the opossum-skin rug, and borne off on the giant shoulders of her future husband, while her mother lay beating her head with a yam stick, and moaning bitterly. Her father and elder brothers rattled their spears and nullas together, vowing vengeance but too terrified to follow in the dark. To track them and recover their only sister was their one desire as they sat huddled together waiting for the first flush of dawn, while the unfortunate mother moaned piteously all through the night. The mocking laugh of the kookaburra at dawn, and carol of the magpie grated harshly in their ears.
Queyon longed to tell them of what he had seen while lying awake, but the dread of being called a coward closed his lips, while his conscience smote him with the fury of a tempest.
As they followed the trail, which was well defined owing to the heavy burden carried it entered the creek a little more than a quarter of a mile away.
It was soon picked up on the opposite side, and for the first time Mertuda's footprints appeared in the soft blue clay. The cool water had revived her, and there was some little satisfaction in knowing that at least she was alive. Kotabi was quick to point out that she had been dragged along, for the impression was deeper towards the heel.
Mile after mile they tracked them, and, faint with fasting and excitement, they sat under a shady gum, glad to escape from the glare of a midday sun. While resting, Queyon's quick eye saw a turtle squatting on an overhanging snag in the creek, basking in the sun. Picking up a small, dry stick, 2ft. in length, and making a detour so as not to expose himself, he approached the stream 50 yards beyond the snag. Gliding noiselessly into the water, he swam slowly towards the turtle. When within a few yards of the snag he turned on his back holding the twig firmly between his toes. As be drifted beneath the snag he tickled the turtle with the stick, and in a moment it had leapt on to his breast, where it was securely held, giving them the means of a welcome repast. They had now reached the "big water-hole," and were within sight of the tree with the three black head .. knobs growing on the trunk, beyond which they dared not go, for it was the boundary of their tribe. Weary and heart-broken .. not getting a glimpse of their beloved playmate, they retraced their steps. Worn out with the day's exertion and sleepless night, they returned to the camp a little before sunset.
A glance was enough to show the unhappy father and mother that their son's search had beed fruitless. The wretched mother's pent-up grief burst forth in a flood of tears while her piteous wails awoke response cries in the sympathetic gums—a true .. symphony.
Word that the king's daughter had been stolen quickly spread throughout the tribe. The nardoo gatherers from the ".. swamp" and kangaroo hunters from the black sand-hill collected their weapons, and marched to the river frontage. A corroboree of war was held, and it was at once decided to offer battle to the rival tribe. Message-sticks to that effect were sent to them, the next full moon being the .. fixed upon. New reed spears, weighty .. the moist pith, were cut by the score .. the ends of which tough boxwood .. were "fixed, lashed in by kangaroo sinew and resined over with the black, pitch-like .. of the pine-tree. The light, "come-back" boomerangs were laid aside for straighter, more deadly ones of war.. the shields, nulla-nullas, and spear-p.. were anointed with the sacred oil of emu.
The nerves of all were at high tem.. and the hunting of game was carried .. with much zest, chiefly with the object training the eye and hand for c.. battle, while war-chants and martial .. with the one theme, were rehearsed .. night. At last the avenging day had .. the whole tribe setting off for the try.. place at noon.
Everything was in readiness as the .. of night crept slowly over them. All .. hushed with the silence of death, as a great convex moon rose like the shoulder of some huge monster, about to hurl .. on their cowering forms. From afar .. the rhythmic chants and fierce war-cries of the rival tribe. Nearer and nearer they came, till the ground seemed to tremble with the fleshy thud of defiant feet. As they followed the bend of the lagoon .. ghastly, war-painted bodies were silhou.. against the burnished sky. When within a spears-throw they halted, the women .. to the rear, while all squatted on the ground. All was hushed again.
Slowly and silently, with bent head, Matuda's mother approached the cental .. leaning on a stout yam-stick. Then.. subdued, plaintive chant, she told of .. wee babe she had suckled at her breast how her heart had gladdened as she had learned to lisp, the tribal tongue, to walk, to swim, and as the big round moon came and went, she had grown tall and strong, and day and night was by her mother's side. Breking into an agonising shriek, she told of how Merinda has been torn from her, at the dead of night. Then flourishing her stick, while her eyes flashed fire, she hurled imprecations on the .. ber's head, and sank to the ground .. one long-drawn piteous wail. A yell of defiance was the immediate response.
At the first clash of the tattoo-sticks .. hundred picked warriors from either .. sprang to their feet, with spears at .. and gorgeously-painted shields on their .. arms.
A brilliant moon shone down on .. scene, lighting up, with an unearthly whiteness the skulls and bones of the wind-swept burial-ground on the neighbouring .. hill, and throwing into intense relief .. thick dark foliage along the river's bank while on the level ground between the two tribes, pledged to fight to the death.. facing each other, waiting for the .. vance."
The rival kings were the first to .. the battle by hurling spears into .. other's lines. A savage roar from two hundred throats rent the air, while spears whistled like sleet before the wind. With wonderful dexterity they were warded .. by the narrow shields. As the spears were exhausted, the shields were cast .. and boomerangs and nulla-nullas were picked up. The distance between the fighters becoming momentarily less.. the deadly rattle of wood against .. varied by the more deadly sound of w.. against flesh, became general. While the battle raged, Mertuda .. among her new-found relatives, feverish with excitement and inconsolable. At an unguarded moment she sprang to her feet and rushed madly towards the battleground, heedless of the cries and threats from the cronies who had been her bodyguard. At that moment her brother Queyon .. her husband stood locked together in death's embrace, their bodies heaving and swaying with intense excitement and .. tion. A cheer broke forth from either side as they gradually fell back, leaving the duellists to decide the issue.
With a superhuman effort Queyon .. himself free, while his nulla flashed forth striking his rival a deadly blow on the forehead. As he staggered backwards, Mertuda rushed between, and throwing herself across his prostrate body begged that Queyon might slay her too.
"Enough!" "Enough!" cried the rival kings, and immediately the women came crowding round. Mertuda, between kisses and sobs, lay coaxing her husband back to life again.
Slowly his eyes opened, and a pæan went forth to the tingling stars, telling of the consummation of earthly desires—wedded love.7
Article17 Nov 1906The article reads: BUSH SKETCHES. MEMORIES. By ERNEST REID.
With the first warm breath of spring the is filled with the cheerful flute-like notes of hundreds of birds. Gaily-caparisoned butterflies dance by, while the far-away, drowsy monotones of the large flies set the mind winging back to the '"long ago." To myself it always recalls the day when, as a child, I was allowed to go with one of the men to see him skin a steer, bogged in the "Island Creek," which lay between the homestead and the main river.
A strange feeling of romance was aroused when the horse and dray were headed for the crossing-place, where usually none but the fiery station hacks and cattle bounded in when being rounded up to the stockyard.
The sense of "being across the creek" was an exhilarating one, and, picking our way through a forest of majestic gums, clumps of saplings, and moss-covered logs and driftwood, we reached the gloomy waterhole in which the body of the steer lay, partly submerged. Not a leaf stirred while the warm September sun cast a delicious, shimmering haze over all, intensifying the whiteness of the plumage of a graceful crane, poised on one leg on a branch of a dry tree in the lagoon.
All nature seemed at rest, save for the monotonous droning of the flies, and, lulled into a reverie by the drowsy sounds and warm sun's rays, I dreamt of fairies and elves, only to be awakened and terrified at the hollow, scraping sound of the lifeless body of the steer as it was hauled up the bank to the accompaniment of shouts of exhortation to the old grey mare, and thus doth the "beetles' droning flight" ever recall the incident.
On a calm, sunny, afternoon, when the coolest share to be found was at the side of the house, by the nursery chimney, it was pleasant to listen to the leather-heads deliberate, clear-called "holly hock, hollyhock," as they hung, swaying in the blossom-laden branches of the gums along the creek. To myself the sound seemed strangely intermingled with the perfume of mignonette, verbena, and petunia.
Such old familiar sounds are sweetest to one whose earliest impressions were formed in the grand old bush. Early incidents and sounds seem inseparable. The curlews' piercing wail, and the regular, measured "mohr-pork" recall a clear, frosty night long years ago when "Jimmy the mail-boy" rode up to the front gate with his bags strapped in front of him. His chattering teeth, as he fumbled with the straps, and cheery "good-night," as he hurried off on his way to the next station, seem sounds of but yesterday.
The harsh screech of a sulphur-crested cockatoo always recalls the time when Jim Leon, a hobble-de-hoy of seventeen, borrowed the old muzzle-loader, and, loading it with small pieces of cast-iron broken from an old camp-oven, stalked the unfortunate birds in the trees by the lagoon, while we followed at his heels, almost hysterical with suppressed excitement in anticipation of the thunderous roar of the over-loaded gun.
Often the muffled moaning of the wind as it surged through ten thousand Æolian harps could be plainly heard at a distance of several miles. There was a fascination in waiting for its approach, when it would lash to fury the topmost tender branches of the staid old gums along tbe creek, while, their massive bodies heaved and swayed with the onslaught. The blacks, camped by the lagoon, would quickly gather their 'possum-skin rugs and scanty clothing to gether, and tucking them in securely beneath the slanting bark of their gunyahs, would await the storm with stoical indifference. If rain threatened, some of the men would hurry to a favourable gum, and with their sharp tomahawks quickly strip large sheets of bark to be used as break winds to their one-sided houses.
Possibly their indifference to storms was due in some measure to the fact that they were always welcome to occupy a roomy old laundry, with a large fireplace, when the weather was particularly severe. Under ordinary conditions they much preferred their mia-mias.
Alas, what a gulf lay between them and those smaller settlers who came on the scene when the old stations were cut up. No free "tucker," "bacon," or "drop o' grog" from them who had all they could do to keep their own bodies and souls together.
Whatever loss the blacks suffered by the intrusion of the first white settlers—the squatters—their lot became infinitely harder in the course of time, when the old order passed away. Kangaroos and emus were dogged relentlessly, and soon all kinds of native game disappeared from their hunting-grounds. The very trees were hacked and torn up by the roots. All was sacrificed to the invading plough. Sturdy, heavy-framed yeomen took the place of the lithesome station hand.
No longer is heard the thunder of a hundred hoofs at dawn, when each morning the station hacks were headed for the stockyard at racing speed, to the accompaniment of loud whip.
No longer is seen the well-knit, well clothed squatter, riding with his sons, fresh from college, in neat boots and breeches, with bright-glinting spurs, as they go straight at a well-topped brush fence.
To the disgust of the black children the drag, buggies, and hooded waggonette have gone from the coach-houses. What happy hours were spent secretly in the waggonette under the heavy calico sheet which covered all like a tent.
"Kitty" and "Sally" are no longer seen sneaking to the drawingroom windows to gaze at the pretty dresses of the ladies with in, or to listen rapturously to the music. "Billy" and "Jacky" were content to lie on their backs by the camp-fires, beating their chests with their hands, and chanting deeds of prowess in deep bass monotones.
The blacks' camp itself is now no longer seen. "The old order changeth, yielding place to new," and who shall say it is for better or for worse? Could inanimate objects speak, it were well to hear the protests of the old homestead itself, for what indignities it has suffered! Hard indeed that its large drawingroom should be converted into a barn, its best bedroom into a kitchen, and its kitchen into a calf-pen.
The old garden, too, has suffered in like manner. Its broad paths and trim rosemary borders have entirely disappeared. Here and there, tender little offsprings of of once highly-prized plants pathetically raise their little heads in supplication. The old creek, and the creek alone, has defied the hand of the spoiler—
"For men may come, and men may go, But I go on forever."8

  • 23 Oct 1931: Australian Station Stories. IN THE NINETIES. LIFE ON THE BARCOO.
"Australian Station Stories," by Ernest Reid (Publisher, Frank "Wilmot, York House, Little Collins Street, Melbourne) — Beautifully written by a lover of the bush. The reader gets to the end too soon. Those who have been brought up to station life will appreciate the strong poetic descriptive character features of this delightful little volume.
This little book has more than usual interest to the Central Queenslander, for one of the stories is written around an incident that occurred at Ruthven station on the Barcoo during the time that Charlie Mackin was at Ruthven; the Perriers at Mt. Marlow; Macansh's at Albilbah; Wiley at Bimerah; A. J. Rogers at Westland; Miller at Portland Downs, and the Smith's at Isis Downs. Many old hands will probably remember the author, particularly Mr. John McNally, the genial squire of Bandon Grove. John's memory might be jogged by the violin, lesson he received from the author.20

William WILLIAMS
(1825-1890)
Birth*1825 Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.
Marriage*Sep 1851 Spouse: Jane Ferguson Gillard. St Geo Hanover Square, London, England, Sep Q [St Geo Han Sq] 1 1.1

Land-Note31 May 1879 GEM-C-12. Henry Bell Beaconsfield May 31/79. To Dr L. L. Smith, MLA
Dear Sir, About 4 months ago, Mr Wm. Williams of Melbourne (who at one time was a carriage manufacturer there) took up 20 acres at Beaconsfield - according to my directions he sent up his application to the Treasury with the usual fee of one pound. By some mistake the messenger who took up the money and application form after obtaining the registration certificate brought both away with him. Meantime a man who works in the neighbourhood discovered the mistake peg off the land. I soon discovered what had been done and on speaking with the latter was informed he would take £10 and give it up. Of course he only wanted it for a spec.
I refused and shortly afterwards finding it was no use trying it on, he said if he got his expenses he would throw it up. I told him I would hand over to him the £5 which I would receive for my commission, he agreed. I then asked him to call and sign the paper intimating to the Lands Department his intention of throwing it up. I then informed Mr Williams of the result of my negotiations with Bell, who authorised me to complete matters. Mr Jarram who adjoins the block referred to wishing his land fenced. I on the strength of getting paid from Mr Williams completed the whole line and did a few other improvements.
Now Mr Bell wishes to back out unless he gets something extra. In short he has no bona fide intentions as the block was simply taken up to make money out of it as he told me so and I have a number of witnesses who can testify to what I assert.
The ground is no use for cultivation, It will only do for people who can afford to lay out money in an ornamental sense and can therefore be no use to the person who has it. I wish you to lay the matter before Mr Longmore It will be a pity if Mr Williams does not get the land as he was about to build a house on it. The whole ?dealing is an attempt to extort money and I am sure the Minister won't approve of such sharp practise.
Yours W. Brisbane

With reference to subject matter of this letter I am unable to give an opinion except that I saw the clearing and fencing mentioned therein done by Mr Brisbane for the applicant Mr Williams. It is for the department to decide if Brisbane's statement is correct if so did Bell obtain the license in a clandestine manner. John Yeoman 6/6/79 [note: John Yeoman was the government bailiff].2
Land-Note*3 Jun 1879 GEM-C-12. Henry Bell W. Williams Esq. Dear Sir, The bearer is the party that has that block of land at Beaconsfield which Mr Brisbane was speaking to you about. He is a fencer by trade, and will let you have that block by paying him £8.5/-, the amount it has cost him in getting it; on the condition that you will allow him to do the fencing. He will put up a substantial two-railed fence and find the materials for 19/- per chain. Henry Bell.3
Land-Note10 Jun 1879 GEM-C-12. Henry Bell The Australian and European Bank Limited, Melbourne 10 June 1879. Dear Sir, Enclosed please find copy of a letter received by me a day or two ago.
I would merely say in this connection that I have no wish to be mixed up in any dispute in this or any other block of land at Beaconsfield or elsewhere and would prefer to give it up if such were probable.
On this fence of England's I propose to build but shall do nothing if there are rival claims, Yours truly W Williams.

  • 27 Nov 1866: WILLIAM WILLIAMS, ESQ , MAYOR OF MELBOURNE.
This gentleman is a native of Bristol, where his family connections have been for many years extensively engaged as stage coach, and subsequently as railway carriage builders. He arrived in Victoria in 1852, and commenced business as a coachbuilder, in Collins-street east. In 1858 be contracted with the Victorian Government to supply railway carriages and waggons, and on the completion of the contract, he erected the Yarra Bank Works, on Batman's Swamp, at the rear of the Melbourne Gas Works. At these works, the largest in Victoria, comprising as they do a covered space of rather over one and a half acres, has been erected a very large complement of English and American machinery and other appliances suitable to the carrying out of manufacturing operations on a very large scale and of a varied character. In a comparatively short space of time railway work to the value of about £200,000 has been manufactured here. A strike in connection with the 'eight hours' movement, lasting seven months, took place at these works shortly after they opened which attracted much public attention on account of the obstinacy which characterised it, and the incidents which arose whilst it prevailed. Mr Williams became a member of the city council in 1863, as representative for Latrobe Ward. He was elected to the mayoral office by a unanimous vote of the council, on the 10th of last month, and was re-elected a few days thereafter, without opposition, by the ratepayers of Latrobe Ward.25
  • 12 Dec 1890: SUDDEN DEATH OF AN EX-MAYOR OF MELBOURNE.
Under very painful circumstances yesterday morning the body of Mr William Williams was found in his offices at 2 Prell's-buildings, at the corner of Collins and Queen streets. Mr Williams at one time occupied a very prominent position in civic life. He was 65 years of age, and resided at Brynhyrst-house, Orrong road, Armadale. For some time past he had been in weak health. The last to see the deceased alive was his son Percy Williams who left his father in the office at Prell's buildings at half past 1 o'clock on Wednesday. As the deceased did not return home from the city at his usual hour in the evening, some apprehension was caused, which deepened into anxiety and alarm as he failed to return throughout the night. Mr Percy Williams was communicated with, and this gentleman paid a visit to his father's office early yesterday morning, and found the door looked. On effecting an entrance, he was horrified to find his father lying in the office on his right side, while blood was oozing from his mouth, life being extinct. He at once reported the matter to the police at the Bourke street west station, and Constable P J Foley had the body removed to the morgue. Here an inquest was held by Dr Youl later on in the day. The medical evidence went to show that death was due to a rupture of an aneurism of the aorta. It was stated that the deceased was in the habit of locking himself in his office.
Mr William Williams was elected to the City Council for the Latrobe Ward on the 5th of February, 1864, and was Mayor during the years 1866 and 1867. On the proclamation of the Albert Ward on the 31st of January, 1870 he was elected alderman, and he resigned his position in the council on the 1st of May, 1876. For many years he represented the constituency of Maldon in the Legislative Assembly. His portrait hangs on the wall of the chamber of the City Council. As a mark of respect to the diseased the flag at the Town-hall was flying half mast high all day yesterday.26

Clifton Downey of Diamond Creek was charged with having driven a motor car in a negligent manner on May 10.
Constable E C Annett of Russell Street said that while on duty in Russell street with Constable T.W. Carey on May 10 he saw Downey driving a motor-car along Russell Street in a southerly direction before reaching tho inter section of Russell and Latrobe Street he drove on to the wrong side of the road, apparently to drive west along Latrobe street. In doing so he knocked over a man who was cycling along Russell street in a northerly direction. The cyclists right leg was broken, and his bicycle was considerably damaged. He was conveyed to a hospital in Downey's car. Constable Careygave corroborative evidence. Detective A I. Lee stated that he had ascertained by measurement that Downey had 'cut the corner" by 20ft.
Downey denied that he had acted negligently The cyclist had been 'zigzagging' about the road and Downey did not think that he would run into him.
Downey was fined £10, and his licence was cancelled.43
