  • 25 Aug 1896: DIVORCE COURT. MONDAY, AUG. 24. (Before Mr. Justice Williams.)
BULLER V. BULLER. This was an application by Annie Buller for a divorce from her husband George Buller, theatrical manager, on the ground of desertion. Mr. Eagleson, instructed by Messrs. Gaunson and Wallace, appeared for the petitioner. There was no appearance for respondent.
The parties were married at All Saints, St Kilda on the 5th July, 1876, and according to the evidence of the petitioner the respondent treated her very badly throughout the time they lived together. On different occasions he deserted her, but came back to her, and on his promises of better behaviour she forgave him. In July, 1892, when they were seperated, she asked him to return and live with her, but he refused. He, however, agreed to allow her 20/ per week, but did not keep his promise long, and eventually ceased to give her anything. When she married him she had £400 and a quantity of jewellery, and he spent the £400, pawned the jewellery, and deserted her for the first time, about six months after marriage. He was in the habit of drinking to excess, and frequently kicked and struck her. On one occasion she was seriously injured internally through being kicked by him and she was still suffering from the effects of his ill treatment. At the present time he was managing for Mr Dampier.
    Decree nisi granted. Annie Gaylard17
  • 8 Oct 1897: Mr. George Buller, who is at present doing such excellent work as Constable O'Hara in "Robbery Under Arms," and also managing for Mr. Alfred Dampier in Sydney, is a gem which any management would be only too eager to possess.
Mr. Buller, in addition to being such a capable actor and manager—in both of which "characters" he is universally popular—is also a very clever musician, and plays both the piano and violin.
Mr. Buller has had a varied experience, though in his case it has been, more varied than falls to the lot of his average brother professional.
Prior to going on the boards he contented himself with selling pounds of sugar and such like necessaries in his father's grocer's shop in Richmond.
Leaving his dad he took control of a post office in the back blocks of New South Wales, but tiring of the consequent seclusion wandered back to Melbourne, where he became commercial master of the All Saints' Grammar School, which position he filled with dignity and the greatest success for eleven years.
Soon after he temporarily lost his sight and became totally blind. His medical adviser told him he would have to do something else. What that something was Buller did not know.
One night he went to see Fred Maccabe. Maccabe was doing big business. Buller was seized with an idea. "If Maccabe can do it and make money; by thunder I can do it, too."
Back to the school he went, and told the head master he found something to do. That something considerably amused the master, the amiable Mr Goff. But Buller was determined. He cut off his beard, which by the way, would have done credit to any lady had it been "a-hanging down her back," and he bought some clothes and other "props."
Then he bought a horse and trap, and started out as a monologue entertainer, and for four years he made heaps of money, which he carefully lost during the land boom.
Next he managed Pain's fireworks for three years and in that capacity put a deal of money in the pockets of the pyrotechnist.
Returning to Melbourne, he managed the gala for the Women's Hospital, and in three weeks cleared the by no means trifling sum of £5700, out of which the present wing was built.
When Maccabe returned to Australia—that was in '89—there was a difficulty regarding his management, and Mr. Buller took control and piloted him for three years.
Leaving Mr. Maccabe, he was offered an engagement by Mr. George Musgrove—it was not the present firm then—to pilot Madame Bernard Beere through the Victorian provinces for three weeks to fill up.
Next he was secured by Mr. Alfred Dampier, with whom he has been since, somewhere about four years. [Mr. Dampier had just concluded his season at the Melbourne Alexandra, after which he went to Tasmania, and a Maoriland tour followed. While in Maoriland some of the company wanted to come back to Sydney. Among them was the gentleman who played the part of O'Hara. Mr. Buller had never before been on the legitimate, but he was prevailed upon by Mr. Dampier to undertake the part, and he did so with such success that his name has always been associated with it. In consequence of his playing he relinquished "advance" work and undertook the management, and since then, as already stated, he has combined the two.] When Mr. Dampier went home last year Mr. Buller accompanied him, and his portrayal of O'Hara was highly eulogised in the London Press.
But it must not be thought that Mr. Buller is only a one-part actor. He has played the whole gamut, and whether in comedy or tragedy he is equally excellent.
Naturally, Mr. Buller had many amusing experiences. On one occasion, when he was about to give his monologue entertainment at Narrabri, his billsticker, for some reason, failed to paste his bills. Mr. Buller thereupon decided to do his own sticking. While doing this a couple of gentlemen on either side kept pulling off the bills as he pasted them. After some time they smiled audibly, whereupon he looked up to ask them where the joke came in, and he recognised a couple of his former commercial pupils. They were a doctor and solicitor, both with a big practice in the town.
When a youngster he was engaged by Mr. George Coppin to appear in his pantomine at Cremorne Gardens, Melbourne. He duly rehearsed with the other youngsters, but on the day of the opening performance some other enterprising youngster stole his pants, and he was unable to appear.
Mr. Buller is a native of Pimlico in the West-End of London, but came to the colonies 46 years ago. During the sixteen years he has been connected with the stage he has only suffered altogether about a week's rest. That is a glowing recommendation of his worth. Dampier leaves for London shortly. Mr Buller intends to have a well-earned rest.18
