    Major-General Frederick Godfrey Hughes. C.B., V.D., 87 years, died today at his home in Alma Road, St. Kilda, after a long illness. A member of a pioneer family, Major-General Hughes's death removes a colorful figure from the military, business and sporting life of the community. Full military honors will be given at the funeral, which will leave All Saints' Church, St. Kilda, for the St. Kilda Cemetery at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
    Born in Melbourne on January 26, 1857, Major-General Hughes was a son of the late Charles William Hughes, of St. Kilda. He was a director of Dunlop Rubber Co. Aust. Ltd. and South Broken Hill Pty. Company, and, in addition had large financial and pastoral interests.
    Major-General Hughes began his military career in 1875, when he joined the St. Kilda Battery of the Field Artillery as a driver. He passed quickly through non commissioned rank, and, when the late Sir William Clarke established the Rupertswood Battery of Field Artillery he was given command with the rank of major.
    FOUGHT ON GALLIPOLI
    At the outbreak of the Great War he commanded the 3rd Light Horse Brigade and accompanied that unit to Gallipoli, where he was promoted brigadier-general. Later, he was invalided home, and subsequently was placed on the retired list. He was mentioned in despatches.
    Maj.-General Hughes was educated at the Melbourne Church of England Grammar School, and for 23 years was a member of the St. Kilda Council. As Mayor in 1901, he welcomed the Royal party to St. Kilda. He was Mayor again in 1911-12.
    He was a member of the Victorian Rowing Club, and represented Victoria in interstate races. An original member of the Essendon and St. Kilda football clubs between 1870 and 1880, he played in interstate League games.
    Maj.-General Hughes was pre-deceased, by his wife, daughter of the late Peter Snodgrass, member for Goulburn in the Legislative Assembly. She was a sister of Janet Lady Clarke, and was president of the Australian Women's National League for many years. Two sons and two daughters survive. The late Canon Hughes was a brother.3

  • 1 Sep 1883: In the Equity Court on Thursday, probate was granted to the will of the late John Kindlan Collins, of Sandridge, stevedore. The property was sworn at £14,000. Among the bequests are £500 to the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Dandenong road, Windsor, and £500 to the Roman Catholic Church, Sandridge. The rents and profits of the All England hotel, Sandridge, go to the testator's father, Mr. Walter Collins. The other property is to be sold, and £1,000 invested for the benefit of his sister, Mrs. Riley, the balance going to his other sister, Mrs. M'Quade.7
  • 7 Sep 1932: "DISAPPEARING FAMILY." SEAMAN LEAVES ESTATE. Mother and Son Missing.
    Who are the next of kin of James Killen McQuade, seaman, who went away from Port Melbourne in 1896, to travel in other lands, and left behind him personal property worth £277. The answer to this question will help to decide the distribution of McQuade's property, which in the intervening 36 years has increased in value to £822. It consists of a one sixth share in the estate of James Kindlan Collins who died in 1883. An extraordinary story of how all the members of the McQuade family except one son had disappeared was unfolded in the Practice Court yesterday, when the question of distributing the estate came before Mr Justice Lowe. On May 19 last The Trustees, Executors, and Agency Co. Ltd, obtained letters of administration of the estate on the presumption that he was dead, but according to an affidavit by the general manager (Mr C R Smibert), the company has been "embarrased in the administration of the estate owing to the uncertainty regarding the date of the death of McQuade and what persons were beneficially interested in hisestate". On an itiating summons, Mr Justice Lowe was asked to determine what persons were entitled to share in the estate, and in what proportions. Mr Coppell instructed by Messrs Abbott, Beckett, Stillman, and Gray appeared for the company, and Mr Herring instructed by Messrs Moule, Hamiliton and Derham for Harold John McQuade, Eveleigh street, Redfern (N.S.W), a son of the deceased. Mr Coppell, submitting various affidavits, described the McQuades as "a disappearing family". The affidavits disclosed that some time after McQuade went away his wife disappeared. She was last heard of in New Zealand. Then one of the sons disappeared, and was not heard of for 16 years until 1925, where he wrote to the company from the United States asking it to administer his father's estate. After answering three letters the son again disappeared, and a fourth letter from the company was returned unopened. Mr Smibert set out in his affidavit that McQuade died some time after October, 1908.
    Mr Justice Lowe said that he would refer the question to the chief clerk of the Supreme Court to ascertain who were the next of kin. Upon the determination of that question he will decide what next of kin were entitled to share in the estate.8
