Anecdote* | May 2019 | Officer Pipeworks James Hicks moved to Officer from Echuca as a young boy in the late 1800s. James met and married Mable Rix and they with their parents started manufacturing bricks and lumber bricks at the site where Berwick Potteries now stands. The lumber bricks were used for partition walls in some of the hospitals in Melbourne. James then started manufacturing agriculture pipes on the north side of the Princes Highway where the pipes were used for drainage in orchards, roadways and market gardens locally and in the Cheltenham, Doncaster areas as well as being sent by rail to Mildura and Red Cliffs and later by semi-trailer to Griffith, N.S.W. Manufacturing of these types of pipes ceased in early 2000 owing to plastic being a lot easier to handle. The factory’s chimney and kilns are now heritage listed and will hopefully soon be restored and used for something else in the community. John Hicks.15 |
