  • 11 Dec 1900: In the person of Mr. James Rose, of the Harpfields, there has passed away a well-known and respected resident of Burford. Mr Rose was, for many years, High Constable of the Hundred of Overs, until the office was abolished by Act of Parliament. As a member of the Board of Guardians, he was for several years one of the most regular attendants at their meetings at Tenbury, He was for many years connected with the Tenbury Agricultural Society, in which he always took the keenest interest, and was one of their most active and energetic stewards, until age and infirmity compelled his retirement. Mr. Rose had for the past few years been getting gradually more infirm, and had latterly become almost blind. He passed away on the 4th instant, at the ripe age of 78.5

    THINKING it might interest some of your numerous readers, I venture to forward to your valuable and widely circulating paper an account of a trip from Springsure, via Tambo, Blackall, Aramac, Muttaburra; thence to Hughenden, Junction Creek, Georgetown ; and my return via Charlestown, or Finnigan's, the Woolgar, and Hughenden, back to Springsure via Beaufort and Avon.

    From Hughenden I changed my course slightly and proceeded to Mount Emu vid Wangulu, an out-station of Hughenden station, it is sixty-five miles to Mount Emu, and I had two stages—one of twenty-eight miles and fourteen—without water; but this is not always the case. This is the main Townsville road ; and if ever a road wanted looking to this does. From Mount Emu to Reedy Spriugs, both cattle stations, is fifteen miles over some rather rough country. From Reedy Springs to Cargoon, both belonging to the Messrs. Anning, is eighteen miles, fair travelling but stony in places, yet plenty of water. From Cargoon I was shown a short-cut avoiding Nulla Nulla, some twenty-five or thirty miles from Cargoon on the Townsville road. I left Cargoon and found my way to Wando Vale, about twenty-two miles, owned by Mr. Page. These are all cattle stations. Had any amount of water in this stage. From Wando Vale, in some eight miles you come to the Clarke, a very large, wide, and deep river. I was fortunate enough to cross it some few hours before it came down a banker; and also the Broken River, some four miles further. From the Broken River to Mr. M'Kinlay's Pandanus Creek is about fifteen miles or more. I passed some half-dozen Celestials, who were getting a little gold, but far from being in payable quantities. From Pandanus Creek to the Lynn old cattle station is some twenty-five miles. Travelling here was very severe ; in fact for two days almost all the time the water was over our feet riding. It is then some twenty-five miles to Messrs. Collins' station. From thence you journey to Mr Barker's, Rosella Downs, twenty miles—a large cattle station, and one of the best houses I have met with for a considerable time, being built on high piles. The creeks had all been running from Mount Emu to here, and Junction Creek some twenty miles further ; the only telegraph station since leaving the Aramac. It sounds well, Mr. Editor, considering the time the repeating station—namely, Junction Creek—has been formed. There are four wires meeting here, and it is 150 miles to the Mitchell. I heard of a great many fats having passed this way; over 2000 head were on and about the Mitchell waiting purchasers, which I am sure it was very difficult to obtain, and offers of £2 were not accepted. From Junction Creek to Georgetown is called seventy miles, but my reckoning made it eighty good, over terribly rough mountainous and stony country. There is but little traffic on this road, which accounts for ita being in such bad order. You follow the telegraph line a good part of the way, occasionally leaving it some few hundred yards, chiefly on the right. The country is well grassed and watered, but the grass is very sour, and stock decline to eat it.

  • 3 Jan 1885: Arrival ot the s.s. Roma.
    The B.I.S.N. Company's steamer Roma, from London via Suez Canal, Batavia, and northern ports, arrived alongside her agent's wharf at 9 o'clock on Tuesday. She is in first-class order, and the ship looks as clean as possible, notwithstanding her long voyage.
    Captain H. Moore Ingram reports that the Roma left Gravesend at 8 o'clock on the 5th November, with 35 saloon passengers and 270 immigrants on board. She experienced strong south-westerly gales to Gibraltar, but from there to Malta the weather was fine. They arrived at Malta at 6 a.m. on the 15th November, after a capital ten days' run. Whilst there they took in coals and provisions, and left again at 1 o'clock the same day. As far as Port Said the weather was fine, and they arrived there at 6 a.m. on the 19th November. Left Suez at 6 p.m. on the 20th, and had a good passage down the Red Sea, arriving at Aden at 8 p.m. on 25th November. Whilst there they had to take on board the heavy Queensland mails which should have come on by the P. and O. boat Clyde to Melbourne. They were, however, left there in error, and if the Roma had not brought them on they would not have arrived for another week. The Roma left Aden at noon on the 26th November, and had a fine passage from Aden to Batavia, but the weather was very hot. They arrived at Batavia at 9 a.m. on December 11th, coaled, and proceeded on their journey at 4 p.m. on the 12 th December, arriving at Thursday Island on the 21st December, where they delivered and received mails, and left again that afternoon at 5 p.m. They arrived at Cooktown at 6 a.m. on the 23rd, and delivered and received mails there. Left Cooktown at 9 a.m. on the 23rd, and arrived at Townsville at 6. a.m. 24th. There was a considerable delay here owing to the difficulty in obtaining men to take off the cargo, it being Christmas holiday time, so that they could not leave until December 25. Arrived in Keppel Bay at 6 a.m. on the 27th instant, where they were again detained from the same cause, no lighters being obtainable. The Roma arrived at the bar at 1 p.m. on the 29th, and delivered her mails on board the Francis Cadell. She arrived alongside, the wharf at 9 on Tuesday morning.
    Dr. W. Wilberforce Dunkley, F.R.G.S., has been in charge of the immigrants, and he has had considerable experience in this kind of work, having been for several years senior officer in the New Zealand service. Under his charge the immigrants have fared well, and there has been only one death on the voyage and no sickness hardly worthy of note. There have been a couple of births. With the assistance of Mrs. Fowler, the matron, the passengers have had a first-rate time of it, and they all looked hale and hearty when we went aboard this morning. The immigrants are a fine looking lot, and they speak well of the officers and of the voyage generally. The ship presents a most cleanly appearance, in fact, we have seldom gone over one that looked better after such a lengthy voyage. Dr. Dunkley is spoken of as a special favourite with the children, and certainly some of the youngsters seemed to regard him as their own peculiar property this morning. During the voyage various concerts, &c., have been got up for the amusement of the passengers and to while away the tedious time. There have been concerts and nigger entertainments, in which all heartily joined.
    Then there has been a school on board under the superintendence of Mr. Kirby, and the youngsters were regailed with a school treat and party that must have reminded them of sundry such frolics in "Merrie England." The discipline on board was strictly enforced, but in such a manner as to cause no dissatisfaction, and the constables, more especially Jones, did their duty admirably. Both Captain Ingram and Dr. Dunkley say that they have seldom seen a better or more orderly set of immigrants, and such being the case we shall have no need to regret the arrival of "new chums" by the Roma. When such a good understanding takes place between officers and crew the voyage loses half its tediousness and time passes pleasantly enough. No doubt many of the arrivals by the Roma will look back in future years, when they have been fairly launched on a prosperous career, with pleasure to their voyage from England to Brisbane.7

    A veteran citizen, who had for many years occupied a prominent position in the commercial and social life of Dublin, has been removed by the death of Mr. Maurice Brooks, D.L. He had attained to the advanced age of 82, when, after a comparatively short illness, the end of a long and honourable career came yesterday at the residence of the deceased, Oak Lawn, Bird avenue, Milltown. As a merchant Mr. Maurice Brooks was singularly successful, and the representative positions which he filled in his time testified to his general high capacity and to the esteem in which be was held by his fellow-citizens.
    A Successful Career. He was founder and Chairman of the well-known firm of Brooks, Thomas, and Co., at Sackville place, and was also connected with a number of other undertakings in the city, including the Gas Company, of which he was a director; the Dublin Brick and Tile Company, etc. The establishment with which his name was specially associated was by his energy and business ability brought to a foremast position among similar concerns in the Three Kingdoms, and in this connection Mr. Brooks developed a prosperous Australian trade in conjunction with his brother. For a number of years the deceased gentleman was a member of the Corporation. In 1874 he was elected to the Office of Lord Mayor, which he served in with dignity and with advantage to the city, dispensing the hospitalities of the Mansion Houuse on a generous scale. While Chief Magistrate Mr. Brooks was elected a member of Parliament for the city in the Liberal interests, these being in the days before the question of Home Rule became the all-important issue which it has been in latter years. Mr. Brooks was very popular in social circles by reason of his geniality, and he was always responsive to calls of charity and of support for worthy public projects. He was a member of the Masonic order, a Deputy-Lieutenant for the City, and a Justice of the Peace for the Co. Dublin. Mr. Brooks was an uncle to Sir Maurice Dockrell, His death will be regretted by a very wide circle.7

    John Samuel Sims Sundercombe was born in St. Heliers, Island of Jersey, on September 5, 1850, and arrived in this colony in April, 1857, with his mother, his father having preceeded them three years previously. He received his education at the Rev. W. Clarke's school, Chapel-street, St. Kilda, and subsequently at Mr James Bonwick's school-the old red brick building at the corner of Robe and Acland streets.     In the same year he succeeded to the boot and shoe business which had been established and successfully carried on by his father since 1857. This business has acquired a wide reputation for imported goods. In the last agitation of the boot trade against the increased duties as proposed in the Budget, he was chosen as the representative of the retail trade to wait on the Commissioner of Customs to oppose the proposal. During the last few years he has been largely engaged in property transactions, his first speculation in city properties being the purchase of the old English and Scottish Bank at the corner of Elizabeth-street and Flinders-lane. Cr Sundercombe is now director of several land and property companies. He has interested himself in various social and religious movements in the borough, and is a liberal member of the Wesleyan body.
    This is the first time he has contested a seat at the council table, and his reasons for coming forward was to test the feeling of the ratepayers in regard to the town hall difficulty. He strongly advocated, the site known as Rankin's corner on
    patriotic grounds, believing that a town hall on that site would be a lasting monument to St. Kilda. Although there has been some party feeling in connection with the election, the ratepayers generally hold Cr Sundercombe in very high esteem, and fully anticipiate that he will act in an honest, energetic, and straightforward manner in managing the affairs of the borough.   • 13 Jun 1890: The Sundercombe Insolvent Estate.
    The story of the rise and fall of Mr. John Samuel Sims Sundercombe, the St. Kilda boot, dealer, who was supposed to have become a millionaire by land-booming, but unfortunately for him, and many of those who had business transactions with him, has had to file his schedule in the Insolvency Court, is very instructive.
    Had Mr. Sundercombe not caught the fever of land booming he would have been at this time enjoying the hard earnings of a life time in comfort, although he might never have emerged from the obscurity of well-to-do boot dealer into the blaze of suburban municipal life.
    Of course the transactions of Mr. Sundercombe do not appear to be so gigantic—on paper—as those of Messrs. Hunting and Wright, Gustav Lachal, Harold Spades and James Mirams, but a careful analysis of his schedule will disclose the fact that he had more to lose of his own money: than any of those previously mentioned.
    The secured creditors are : Mr. Julius Matthews, of Albert-street, East Melbourne, who on December 1, 1888, lent £4500 on a first mortgage of house and land in Crimea-street. The Metropolitan Building Society a first mortgage for £5750 over vacant land in Tennyson street, St. Kilda ; third mortgage over property in Crimea-street, St. Kilda, and Queen's-road; value of security, £7241. The Australian Widows' Fund Life Assurance Society, of Collins-strcet, let £500 and took as security a first mortgage over house and land in Henry-street, St. Kilda, also Mr. Sundercombe's life policy of insurance. The Rev. Edwin Day, of Westbury-street, St. Kilda, and the Rev. Alexander Gosman, of Auburn-road, Auburn, advanced £400 on a first mortgage over house and land in Henry-street, Windsor. [This is evidently trust money, and the clergymen named had no business to invest it with a landboomer. We shall have something more to say in future issues concerning the negligence — and in many instance more than mere negligence — of which trustees have been guilty.]
    Mr. Joseph Pool, financier, of Chapel street, Windsor, has obtained a judgment on a promissory note for £170 13s. 1d. Mr. William White Cabcna, of Lonsdale-st. merchant, is a creditor for £10,151 18s. 1d., and the security he holds is a first mortgage over 66ft. of vacant land on the St. Kilda Road ; a first mortgage over 41ft of land and house in Marlton Crescent, St. Kilda ; a first mortgage over 33ft. of land in Manchester-street Footscray ; a first mortgage over 45ft. of land and house, Henry-street, Windsor, and a second mortgage over the land over which first mortgages were already held by Mr. Julius Matthews, the Metropolitan Building Society, the Australian Widows' Fund Life Assurance Society, the Australian Deposit Mortgage Bank, the Revs. Edwin Day and Alexander Gosman. Mr Cabona also holds as security 225 shares in the Essendon Land and -Tramway Company Limited, valued at £11 5s; 2125 shares in the Queensville Land and Investment Company Limited, valued at £265 12s. 6d; 25 shares in the Grosvenor Hotel Company Limited, valued at £5 ; 100 shares in Charles Gordon and Company Limited, £25 ; 27 shares in the Australian Property and Investment Company Limited, £81 ; deposit of contract of sale Howard Tapley Clarton to insolvent of land in Normanby-road, South Melbourne, £5 ; 150 shares in the St. Kilda Freehold Investment Company Limited, £50; 2 shares in the Caulfield Gardens Syndicate, £10 ; 100 shares United Australian Mutual Fire Insurance Company, £5; Certificate of Title to freehold land in Loch-street, St. Kilda, frontage 66ft. by depth of 157ft., £297.
    Mr. John Sundercombe, of Charnwood Crescent, St. Kilda, is a creditor for £13,830. He holds security a third mortgage over properties under the first mortgage to the Metropolitan building Societies and other societies. Edwin Day and Alex. Gosman, a fourth mortgage over land under first mortgage to Julius Matthews, £10; Letter of charge over shares held by Joseph Peel to secure debt, £455 ; John Heard, of Geelong, farmer, £2500, money lent, pledge of 1/8th interest in the Doutta Galla Syndicate ; Heincke and Fox, Limited, £200, Company's lien on 500 shares in the Company, £200; Howard Tapley Clarton, of 76 Collins-street West Melbourne, £17,781, promissory notes held by Victorian Land Company for purchase money of land sold to insolvent by Howard Tapley Clarton, £17,780 ; Maddock Furneaux and others. Commercial-road, Prahran, £515 16s. 8d , vendor's lien for unpaid purchase money on land at Caulfield, £648 2s. 6d.
    The unsecured creditors are :—John Burke, merchant, Lonsdale-street, Melbourne, £103 10s; William F. Flint, accountant, Collins street, Melbourne, £257 ; Robert E. Craddock, minister, Coppin-street, Richmond, £257 ; David Clucas, dyer, of Bridge-road, Richmond. £535; William Hosken, out of business, Gore-street, Fitzroy, £257; James Strong, of Moorabool-street, Geelong, importer, £535 6s. 6d; E. F. Millard, of Powong, storekeeper, £257; John Sykes, of Armadale, Justice of the Peace, £103 10s; H. Roebuck, dentist, of Geelong, £535 ; Edward Burden Buckhouse, solicitor, Collins-street, Melbourne, £535 : Harold Bayson, of Grandview-grovre Prahran, £257. Refund of money paid by these persons as shareholders of the Great Glen Iris Land Company as deposit on shares in that company, where monies were paid to the insolvent as vendor to the company, but the sale to the company was afterwards cancelled, and the deposit money returned,—Adolphus Frederick Dean, of Collins-street west, Melbourne, sharebroker, £400, money due on a promissory note ; William E. Upton, of Market-street, Melbourne, manufacturer, £396 15s. 2d., judgment on promissory note ; McCutcheon and Bruce, of Collins street west, Melbourne, solicitors, £200, law costs and amount on promissory note ; Eggleston, Derham and Martin, solicitors, Market-street, Melbourne, £329 12s., law costs; Oakden, Addison and Kemp, of William street, Melbourne, £100, for work done; John Henry Maddock, of Queen-street, Melbourne, £400, judgment obtained for deficiency on re-sale of land at South Melbourne ; Mayor and Councillors of St. Kilda, £134 18s. 9d., judgment obtained in Supreme Court for making a right-of-way in Kendall-street, St. Kilda; William Joseph Jabez Barrett, of Rosstown, farmer, £210 5s. 6d., money due on judgment.
    Amongst the losses of insolvent were :—£10,000 on land in Glen Iris, sold by insolvent to the great Glen Iris Land Company, and which the contracts of sale were cancelled ; £12,800 loss on 67 ft, 3 in. of land in Collins street with a depth of 373 feet to Flinders-lane.
    Insolvent purchased this land from P. K. McCaughlan, but was unable to carry out his contract; loss on one eighth share in Oakhill Land Company, valued at £1075 6s. 3d; loss on land in Normanby-road, South Melbourne, £1500 ; loss on land in King-street, West Melbourne, £2100. Amongst the insolvent properties were 99 feet of land in Normanby-road, South Melbourne, valued at £17,786 ; several lots at Rosstown, valued at £994 11s. 6d. : 71 feet of land in Crimea street, St. Kilda, with a brick residence thereon, valued at £3500 ; 200 feet to Queens-road, St. Kilda, valued at £3135 : 357 feet, to Kendall-street, valued at £1785 ; 300 feet to Coleridge street, St. Kilda, valued at £1500; 486 feet to Tennyson-street, St. Kilda, valued at £2916 ; 61 feet to Marlton-crescent, at St. Kilda, valued at £1500. The debts due upon mortgage reach £36,031 18s. 1d; unsecured creditors' debts total £6,398 17s. 8d., and those to secured creditors reach £22,625 15s. 6d; his real estate assets reach £38,853 11s. 8d., and £3607 7s. 10d. is held on security. The total liabilities are £65,056 11s. 3d., and his assets £12,460 19s. 6d.7
  • 17 Mar 1891: THE SUNDERCOMBE INSOLVENCY.
    An examination sittings was held before Judge Worthington in the Insolvency Court yesterday into the affairs of John S. S. Sundercombe, boot and shoe dealer, St. Kilda. The insolvent stated his estate was compulsorily sequestrated on the 10th April, 1890. He owed £6398 17s. 8d. to unsecured creditors and £58,657 13s. 7d. to secured creditors. The value of the property held as security was £42,460 19s. 6d. The estate allowed a deficiency of £22,595 11s. 9d. His cause of insolvency was inability to realise on real estate. He had been struggling to keep out of the Insolvency Court since 1888. He had been in business as a boot dealer at High-street, St. Kilda, from 1874 to October, 1888. He then sold the business to E. Edwards for £2500. At that time his liabilities amounted to £65,000. His book debts amounted to £1000. He did not sell them to Edwards, and had collected £700 of them. He sold the business because he thought he could do without it.
    The examination was adjourned until the 6th April.8
  • 14 Nov 1893: THE INSOLVENCY OF J. S.S SUNDERCOMBE. HE IS RELEASED FROM GAOL.
    An application was made yesterday by Mr. Hobday in the Insolvency Court for the release of J. S. S. Sundercombe, of St. Kilda, formerly boot and shoe dealer, from gaol, to which he was committed on the 3rd inst. by an order of Judge Molesworth for contempt of court in not paying £122, the costs incurred by the trustee in a compulsory certificate application in his insolvent estate. Mr. Shiels opposed the application on behalf of the trustee who had incurred the costs. It appeared from the arguments that.....9
