By 2 October 1885 William John Collyer had been residing on his selection for six years, and had built a two-roomed wooden dwelling-house, measuring 23 x 15 feet, as well as stabling, a cowshed and a pigstye, built from wood and bark. He had fenced his selection and his neighbours were Mr Pither, Mr Fox and Mr Buck. He also planted an orchard of about 4 acres with 315 trees. An inspection by the mounted constable stated that the land was all enclosed, but that Collyer was residing on the selection for about 6 months every year, and that the cowshed and pigstye were in a dilapidated state.
The next declaration in December 1885 again showed the fencing and buildings and detailed some covered and some opened drains that had been laid. Collyer stated that his house had now a store and wash house attached, and that he was residing on the property for nine months of the year, the remaining three months he was living at the Grand Hotel in Queenscliff, which was about 70 miles away. He valued his improvements at £573.
Collyer did not have any family. He stated that the land was very poor and covered with bayonet grass, and that it was utterly impossible to make a living on it. Neither cattle nor sheep would live on it.

In November 1886 Collyer first applied for a crown grant for a part of the selection (about 109 acres), stating that he wished to subdivide this portion and sell it in small allotments. Then he stated that he was ready to purchase the whole area, and two days later he applied for a transfer of leasehold for part of the selection, ie the 109 acres mentioned in the first instance. He transferred the lease for 109 acres, now known as GEM-E-4A to his uncle George Gutsole on 13 Nov 1886, and George Gutsol(e) transferred it back to William John Collyer on 30 Nov 1886. Two weeks later the Crown Grant was issued.1

  • 27 Aug 1902: Tea merchants in the toils.
    The collector of customs, at the District Court this morning, charged certain tea firms with "unlawfully importing certain prohibited imports, to wit, tea, which was unfit for human use." The firms interested are: — .... Frederick Wilhelm Prell and Albert Edward Rushall, Queen-street (two charges) ... On the application of Mr. Manger, who appeared for the Crown Law Office, the cases were adjourned by consent to 2nd September. Albert Edward Ernest Rushall12
  • 25 Oct 1905: WHEAT AGENT CHARGED. In the City Court to-day Alexander Wilson, a young man, was charged with converting 119 bags of wheat the property of F. W. Prell and Co., to his own use. Accused denied the charge. Albert Rushall, a member of the firm of F. W. Prell and Co., said that defendant was a commission agent of Rosebery, near Beulah.
    He acted as wheat buyer for witness s firm. He was paid a comission of ½d a bushel and was to forward the wheat to any place which the firm might direct. In January last he received 209 bags. Only 90 bags of that quantity had been received by the firm. Witness's firm had never got the wheat nor the money that had been paid for it. Accused who reserved his defence was committed for trial at the General Sessions on 1st November. Bail was allowed in two sureties of L50. Albert Edward Ernest Rushall13
  • 29 Apr 1912: DEATH OF MR. F. W. PRELL. WELL-KNOWN BUSINESS MAN
    Mr. Friedrich Wilhelm Prell, who for many years has figured in the business and social life of Melbourne, died early on Saturday morning, at his residence, Iona, St George's Road, Toorak. His illness was a brief due, and his death was the direct result of a chill caught only last Tuesday morning. Mr Prell had, however, been suffering from lung trouble for some years, an attack of influenza, contracted many years ago, having left him prone to the repeated attack of bronchitis. He leaves a family of six, his wife having died seven years ago.
    Mr Prell was, perhaps, one of the best known figures in Melbourne commercial life. His name is associated with the block of buildings which he erected in Queen-street just prior to the big boom of 1893. He practically introduced to Melbourne the system of erecting big blocks which could be let in flats and offices, and he was practically the first man to introduce the now common system of elevators in these blocks. In business his word was his bond. The strenuousness with which he devoted himself to his business marked all that he touched in life. He walked, rowed, and raced with the same enthusiasm, and in his home life played billiards and chess with such keenness that, with Dr Fred Bird, he was at one time one of the best amateur billiard players in Victoria. Those whose memory of athletics in Melbourne goes back to 1880 will recall the Ancient Mariner's Rowing Club, and Mr Prell's connection with it. In fact, the world of sport has seen much of the late Mr Prell.
    He rode to hounds until old age prevented him doing so any longer. He was passionately fond of horses, and always kept good animals. At one time he won a Hunt Club Cup with a horse called Caliph, which was ridden by Sir Frank Madden. As far back as 1878 or1879 he won the Newmarket Handicap with a horse called Tom Kirk, which afterwards ran second in the Melbourne Cup. With Mr Power he was for some time hon. auditor of the V.R.C., and always took a great interest in the club and its doings.
    Mr Prell was of German descent, having been born in Hamburg over 80 years ago. He received his education in his native country, and came out to Australia when 21 years of age. In Sydney, he started as a member of the firm Ager and Prell. Five years later he dissolved partnership there and came to Melbourne, where he founded the firm of F. W. Prell and Co. Limited. His treatment of those who worked for him may be gauged from the fact that Mr A. E. Rushall, a partner in the firm, started his business career with Mr Prell as a boy, and has never left the firm, remaining in later days as a partner with the founder. Mr. Prell's business as a merchant was of an extensive character, both in the import and export trade, the considerable extent to which he participated in the development of the wheat export trade of Victoria representing only one phase of his multifarious activities. His long career covered a period in which great changes have taken place in the methods by which the world's commerce is carried on, changes in which Australian trade has shared along with that of other countries, and he brought a keen and well-trained intellect to bear in adapting himself to the changing conditions. As a business man his reputation was of the highest, and he enjoyed in the greatest degree the respect and esteem of all who came on with him.
    In 1859 Mr Prell married Miss Jessie Usher Dunlop, of Edinburgh. He was buried yesterday, the day that would have been his wife's birthday anniversary had she lived. He leaves a family of six. His eldest son is Mr Stewart Prell, who is an orchardist in Tasmania, while the second son is Mr Charles Prell, who is a pastoralist, near Goulbourn, New South Wales. His third son, Mr Harry Prell, has been in his father's firm for a number of years past, and is a well-known figure in commercial circles. The eldest daughter is the wife of Mr G. Fairbairn, M.H.R; the second is the wife of Mr F Keating, of Anthony Gibbs, and Sons, financiers, London, and the third was married to Mr James E Hayes, of Gibbs, Bright, and Co.
    The interment took place yesterday at the Booroondara Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, the Rev. J.F. Macrae officiating both at the house and at the graveside. The chief mourners were the two sons, Mr Charles and Mr Harry Prell, while Mr Fairbairn, M. H. R., Senator Frazer, and Messrs J. C. Stewart, James F. Haynes, A. E. Rushall, H. Byron Moore, T. M. Stewart, and W. T. Sharp acted as pallbearers. The funeral arrangements were carried out by A. A. Sleight. , Albert Edward Ernest Rushall14

  • 12 Oct 1889: MRS. PRELL'S DANCE. Mrs. F. W. Prell, of "Iona," Toorak, gave a most successful and brilliant ball on the evening of Wednesday, October 9. The fine grounds, as well as the conservatory, were illuminated with Chinese and Japanese lanterns and Crystal Palace lamps, the effect being enhanced by the lovely moonlight night. The interior of the house was a bower of flowers, and every nook had its share of blossoms. The delicate green elm flower was very conspicuous amongst the drawingroom decorations, and so artistically massed that they were a source of much admiration. Mr. and Mrs. Prell received their guests, who numbered about 300, at the entrance to the drawingroom, and at 9 o'clock dancing commenced in the new billiard room, which received its first "warming" on the occasion. In this room many of Mr. Prell's fine pictures were hung, and the far end Plock's band was stationed, and played all the newest music, including selections from the "Beggar Student." At the side of the ballroom a "sitting out" conservatory had been arranged, which was reached through French windows. Mirrors formed the background of this annexe, and the effect of the reflection of the lively scene in the ballroom was most charming. All the evening delicate refreshments were to be found in the library, and at half-past 11 supper was served in the large morningroom. The dresses were all very smart, many of them showing the latest novelties in style, conspicuous being the new nets, which are not unlike fisherman's net, but that the material is worked up of flossy-looking silk, which gives a beautiful transparent effect to the silk fabrics used underneath. Another pretty introduction, the work of an artistic dressmaker, was the ruffle and elbow puffs, that are taking the place of the old fashioned bertha. These, and an artistic arrangement of front draperies, were, as a rule, formed of a lovely creamy fabric not unlike crepe de chine, but somewhat softer and more delicate, known as chiffon. The hostess was in a rich gown of royal blue velvet with a handsome petticoat of silver brocade and side panels of duchesse lace. Miss Prell was very smart in rose pink armure royal, draped with fisherman's net of the same colour, and a ruff bertha of chiffon. Mrs. George Fairbaim's eau de nil brocade had a petticoat of white chiffon with draperies held by garlands of pink giant roses and their foliage; the bodice was completed with a ruff and rose epaulettes. Lady Clarke was absent, being not quite strong enough yet to venture out in the night air, but Sir William came, bringing with him, his daughters—Mrs. Falconer Macdonald and Miss Clarke—the former looking very well in pate blue and lovely diamonds, and the latter in cream brocade and lace. Mrs. George Chirnside, looking in the best of health after her trip, came in gold brocade softened with panels of white chiffon. Mrs. Alec Murphy aud Mrs. Rupert Clarke were two striking figures in fine black gowns richly trimmed with jet, and long black kid gloves. Mrs. Meecham and Miss Hyndman wore becoming black lace dresses with well cut velvet bodies. Mrs. George Stevenson was in grey blended with pink, and Mrs. Herbert wore white silk with lace draperies ornamented with garlands of white daisies. Miss Sprague had on an uncommon combination of pale blue and pink, with classic bodice draperies. Miss Wagner and Miss Buckley looked smart in yellow with gold drops, and white combined with yellow. Mrs. Edward Miller wore a demi-trained gown, and bodice of deep blotting-paper pink with a front of rich pompadour brocade softened with chiffon ruffs, and Mrs. Albert Miller was in apple green armure royal with soft draperies and handsome panels of gold embroidery. Miss Colin Simson was in an uncommon gown of delicate mauve brocade trimmed with tulle. Mrs. Joseph Clarke wore a trained gown of rich black satin de Lyon relieved with cut jet galon. Miss F. G. Smith, Miss Warrington Rogers, Miss Yencken, Miss Rosa Snodgrass, Miss Fenner, Miss A. Carrington, Miss Miller, and Miss E. Stevenson, all wore pretty white frocks of liberty silk or tulle. Two effective brown dresses, which were well combined with yellow draperies and lace, were worn by Miss Rogers and Miss Greig, and Miss Langton was in an art green liberty silk.12

A Hughenden telegram states that a sad fatal accident occurred on the Richmond Downs Station on Thursday last, when Mr. William Alfred Prell, aged 24, son of Mr. F. W. Prell, of Melbourne, owner of the Richmond Downs Station, received injuries internally which resulted in his death on Saturday night. The deceased was assisting to draft some cattle, when a cow kicked the stick which the deceased was pushing the cattle with into his body. He died from the injuries.3

  • 19 Sep 1930: Mr. Abe Halinbourg's death in Melbourne a few days ago at the age of 75, recalls a noted Victorian success in the A.J.C. Metropolitan. Mr. Halinbourg was the owner of the four-year-old Acolyte, which captured the race in 1885. Acolyte's time for the race, 3.31¼, was a record for the two miles, over which distance the Metropolitan was then decided. Only our Melbourne horses — Nemesis, Acolyte, Bohemian and Sir Andrew — have won the Metropolitan, says a writer in the "Evening News."
    The death occurred suddenly, on September 11, at Hawksburn Rd., of Mr. Abraham Halinbourg, husband of Susan and father of Mrs. J. Rosenfeld (Sydney), Mrs. H. Goldman, Mrs. H. Freadman, Violet, Mrs. F. Dexter, and Beryl. Aged 75 years.11
